Whirly Twirly Birds Supplies: - Balloon - Feathers - Clothespin - Marker - Tape

Activity Steps:

1. It’s really simple to make the birds! First, blow up the balloon, twist the neck of the balloon closed and clip with a clothespin.

2. Draw a face on the bird. 3. Next, pick feathers for each wing and tape ends onto the balloon. (You can experiment

by adding more or less feathers. Does the bird fly better, or worse, with more feathers? Why do you think that is?)

4. Now comes for the fun part! Just unclip the balloon and toss it upwards in the air. 5. Repeat multiple times!

• Does the placement of the feathers make a difference in how it flies? • Which feather placement works best? • What type of release gives the bird the most lift?

Note: If you are doing this outside, be sure to collect any popped balloons as they can pose as a choking hazard for animals.
