ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY

NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : INDORE AIRPORT (MADHAYA PRADESH)

ABOUT THE CITY: (I) INTRODUCTION:

Indore is a tier II City; it is the largest city of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh by population. It serves as the headquarters of both Indore District and Indore Division. A central power city, Indore exerts a significant and has been described as the commercial capital of the state. Located on the southern edge of Malwa plateau, the city is located 190 km west of the state capital of Bhopal. Indore traces its roots to its 16th century founding as a trading hub between the Deccan and Delhi. The city and its surroundings came under Maratha Empire on 18 May 1724 after Marath Peshwa assumed the full control of Malwa. During the days of the British Raj, Indore State was a 19 Gun Salute (21 locally) princely state ruled by the Maraha Holkar dynasty, until they acceded to the Union of India. Indore served as the capital of the Madhya Bharat from 1950 to 1956. Though it is no longer the capital, it still maintains the grandeur by being the education hub of the state with home to premier education institutions like IIT and IIM in addition to being a commercial center of the Malwa plateau.

(II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION: As per 2011 census the population of Indore District was 32,76,697.

ECONOMY: The Economy of Indore is notable for its importance in the areas of trading, finance and distribution in Madhya Pradesh. Indore has the largest economy in central India and is the business and trading capital of the state. Located at the crossroads of western and central India, Indore has relatively good connectivity and has been the hub of trade and commerce, not only for the state but also for western India. The city holds a dominant position and is a vibrant center for trade and commerce. Cotton textiles are the city‟s major product, but iron and steel, chemicals, and machinery are also manufactured there, the textile industry is in decline and is being replaced by a variety of new manufacturing industries. Still it is the one of the largest textile industry in India. Old time industries which flourished in Indore were handloom, had dyeing, manufacture of niwar, oil extraction by ghani, manufacture of bamboo mats, baskets metal utensils, embossing and engraving of gold and silver ornaments, shellac industry, etc. Ayurvedic and Unani deficient from roots and herbs were manufactured under state patronage. Indore has one of the largest trans-shipment centers for truck transport. Apart from textile industry, Indore has oil seed extraction industry, confectionery, paper and straw board, factories for asbestos products, RCC pipes and poles, machine tools and accessories, electrical machinery and appliances, electronics goods, bicycles and readymade garments. Indore accounts for about one third of the total „Namkeen„(variety of gram flour snacks) production of India. Due to its trade and industry, the residents of the city refer Indore as Mini Bombay.

INDUSTRY: The city has emerged as a major industrial center of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Pithampur near Indore is one of the largest hubs of vehicle and automobile industries in India. Well known industrial houses have opened factories and plants in Indore. Some of the most important Indore industries are: Kinetic Honda Hindustan Motors Onida Saka Crompton Greaves Prestige Group Cipla Bajaj Tempo Piramal Healthcare Bridgestone Ranbaxy Laboratories Eicher Motors Hindustan Motors The Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology has been established in Indore to bolster technological research and advancement. TOURISM POTENTIAL: CHOKHI DHANI: Chokhi Dhani and Nakhrali Dhani are Rajastani heritage resorts on the outskirts of Indore. These resorts are given the appearance of a Rajasthani village in India. The villages provide people the peaceful atmosphere of the village, along with the modern day facilities and entertainment. CENTRAL MUSEUM/ INDORE MUSEUM: Central Museum also known as the Indore Museum, one of the most interesting buildings in Indore. It is a treat for the people who are genuinely fascinated by the history of India and the rich civilization that flourished here in the pre Historic age. CHHATRIS: The Maatha Rulers were skilled in the field of Architecture. An exquisite example of their architectural style comprise of the Chatris of Indore. Tesechhattris are the cenotaphs built in the memory of the Holkar rulers. The memorials are built in stone and have stood the test of time. LAL BAAG PLALC: Lal Baag palace is one of the most spectacular buildings in Indore. It stands on the outskirts of he owns, towards the southwest, It is a three storied building on the bank of the River Khan. The palace was built by Maharaja KANCH MANDIR: The kanch Mandir as they suggests, is a temple which is entirely made up of glass and mirrors. It is also known as the seth Hukamchand Temple, as it was built by the “Cotton King Sïr Hukamchand Seth in the early 20th century. It is primarily a Jain Temple and is a wonder in glass. RAJWADA: Rajwada is the historical palace of the Holkars. It was built about two centuries ago and is located near the Chhatris in the main square. It is a seven storied structure, which serves as the living example of the grandeur of the Holkars Rajwada stands in the Centre of the city. TOWN HALL OR MAHATMA GANDHI HALL: The Town Hall or Mahatma Gandhi Hall is one of the prettiest buildings in Indore city of India. Built in 1904, it was originally named King Edward Hall. In 1948, it was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi

Hall. It has a remarkable Indo – Gothic structure and is made in semi stone is splendid domes and steeples are the landmark of the Indore city. It has a clock tower in front and is popularly known as Ghanta Ghar. The central hall can accommodate 2000 people at a time and the venue of book, painting exhibitions and fairs throughout the year. The building also has a library, children‟s Park and a temple. NEHRU PARK: Another well-known tourist spot in the city is Nehru Park. It is the oldest park in Indore, loaded centrally. Built by the Britons, it was earlier known as Biscow park and was open only to British before independence. After independence, it was renamed as Nehru Park. The park has a variety of roses and offers facilities like library, swimming pool, children‟s hobby center, a mini train and battery operated cars.
