    Indonesian UFO Case Review 2009

    Overview

The following report comprised 38 cases of reported UFO sightings & related phenomenacollected throughout the year 2009 by BETA UFO group1. The data is collected from various

reports coming in through the groups mailing list as well as from direct testimonies receivedprivately by researchers associated with the group.

The major aim of the analysis is to provide a general outlook of the data that can function asa stepping stone for more detailed studies in the future.

The data analysis is focused on three main features that are considered typical withinUAP/UFO data analysis. The three features are:

types of sightings regional distribution of sightings SVP-rating measurement.

A major constraint is that the data might very well represent only a small portion of all UFOsightings cases in the country in 2009. It has been noted from time to time that people dotend to report cases through other means than BETA UFO. A significant number of reportsalso tend to come up years after it happened.

    Outline

The effort to compile local reports of unidentified flying object (UFO) & its relatedphenomena is actually nothing new in the development of Indonesias ufology. At least sincethe 1950s various cases across the country have been gathered and filed by pioneeringufologist Air Vice-Marshall (ret.) J . Salatun. A similar effort has also been taken up since thelate 1990s by BETA UFO community, the countrys prominent ufology group to date.

Nevertheless, an effort to provide a general analysis/review of the compiled local data hasyet to surface.

J . Salatuns seminal book on ufology, 'Menyingkap Rahasia Piring Terbang' (Unveiling theFlying Saucer's Secret) published in 1960, did provide a quite detailed analysis of the UFOphenomena. However it was done with greater emphasis on the global rather than the localnature of the subject. Meanwhile, data compiling by BETA UFO has tended to focus moreon the filing of cases. Although providing a good basic description and chronological recordof local events, it has yet to provide any general analysis. It is this apparent gap within thelocal UFO database analysis that this report will now try to address.

This is a rudimentary and non-exhaustive report done with limited resources particularly

time. Nevertheless, as rudimentary as it is, the general analysis provided here will hopefullybe able to function as a basis for future studies. Particularly studies connected to BETAUFO communitys effort in developing local ufology.

Knowledge of the UFO phenomenon has developed by leaps and bounds in the country inthe past few years. An ever increasing interest from both the general public and media has

1The data is compiled in late 2009 and was finished by March 2010. The latest revised version

(as presented in the Appendix) was finished in late August 2010. Revision was mostly made ondetails of the reports.

manifested itself, much of which has also been directed to BETA UFO as a prominentsource for information. In such a context, higher quality data-analysis from BETA UFO willdefinitely provide a better foundation for the countrys growing interest in ufology.

    Review

    A) Types o f s ight ings

A significant amount of the UAP/UFO sighting cases compiled in 2009 (19 cases/50%)involved an FB1 type of phenomenon (See Figure 1). Coming at second place (9cases/23.68%) is the MA1 category that comprises objects that showed disrupted trajectory(maneuvers). In third place is the AN1 category (8 cases/21.03%) that stands for anomaliessuch as amorphous lights and unexplained explosions/sounds.

Although the FB1 basically stands for unidentified objects that fly-by through the sky the

compiled data involves more movement than that. Some objects are reported to behovering and swirling in a stationary manner while at least one case involves objects that

just appeared out of nowhere on the sky. Such cases are treated as fly-by simply for thesimplicity of data grouping. Table-1 lists the various descriptions that comprised the FB1classification in this report.

It should also be noted that at least one of the FB1 case (Case No. 26 - September 2009;Villa Pondok Remaja, Puncak holiday resort; Cianjur regency; West Java) has beenanalyzed as a possible blurfo phenomena (where a normal object got caught as a blurry,UFO-looking image on photo).

The MA1 category, involving maneuvering unidentified objects, also showed colorfuldescriptions in each reported case as outlined in Table-2. One of the cases (Case No. 31 -

October 27 2009; GBA residential complex; Bojongsoang district; Bandung regency; WestJava province) clearly indicated a sign of intelligent control of the aerial object as it was saidto be making an L-shaped maneuver. The said case also involved alleged physical effect tothe witness mobile phone (causing it to become dysfunctional during sighting) which israrely reported in Indonesia.

The AN1 category mostly involves amorphous lights seen in the sky although with differingdetails (such as the types of colors and/or movement seen during the sighting). A case thatseemingly has no precedence yet in the countrys UFO case history is the one where anunexplained sound was heard by several witnesses (Case No. 5 - February 29, 2009;Cilacap regency; Central Java province) without any logical source to be found.

In the context of AN1 cases, one case of amorphous light sighting (Case No. 28 - October15/16, 2009; the skies over Bantul; Yogyakarta) has been proven to be a naturalphenomenon prior to this report writing. The case has been proven to be a simple reflectionof sunlight on an airplane wing after a similar photo was replicated by a BETA UFO memberin February 2010.

    B) Regional Distribution

The 2009 compiled data showed a predominant number of cases (26 cases/68.42%) werereported in the islands of J ava and Sumatra (8 cases/21.05%). In J ava Island itself (seeFigure 3) a majority of the cases were reported from West J ava province (12 cases/46.15%)and the capital city, J akarta (5 cases/19.23%).

The regional distribution pattern seemed to coincide with J ava Islands relatively higher

exposure to UFO subjects (from the media & ufology groups). It might also represent theunique sociological trait of the island as the geopolitical center of the country wheredevelopment efforts has always been concentrated. J ava is also known as the most denselypopulated area among the five major islands of the Indonesian archipelago (J ava; Sumatra;Kalimantan; Sulawesi; Papua) something that might contribute to the larger number ofreports coming from the region.

The regional distribution of reported cases in 2009 also showed that only a small number ofcases (14 cases/36.84%) are reported from the urban areas. In this area, the city of J akartaand Bandung as noted in the pioneering research of J . Salatun again figured quite

prominently as areas with quite a few UFO case reports (each with 5 [35.71%] and 4[28.57%] cases respectively).

    C) SVP Rating

The SVP rating for most of the cases compiled in 2009 showed that most of them (18cases/47.37%) are fairly doubtful cases. These are cases that would only need a slightalteration of one of the parameter to have them explained as natural or non-UFO relatedphenomena. On top of that only 2 cases (5.26%) actually involved site visitation by someonefamiliar with the UFO phenomena.

The data seemed to express the major constraints faced by the BETA UFO community incompiling and analyzing the various reports coming from across the country. These are theproblem of manpower (as most members are not field researchers); time (with mostmembers juggling between work and ufology) and geographical distance (especially those inremote areas outside of J ava Island). This problem, of course, is not exclusive to BETA UFOor Indonesia in particular.

On a different perspective, the data also express the good quality of field research work thatthe group has done when it does manage to do so. One case (Case No. 28 - October 15/16;Bantul; Yogyakarta) was proven to be a simple light reflection by a BETA UFO researcherdespite supportive comment from the countrys space and aeronautics agency for the caseto be a genuine UFO (see footnote on case entry in the appendix). Another case (Case No.31 - October 27 2009; GBA residential complex; Bojongsoang district; Bandung regency;West Java province) investigated by BETA UFOs affiliated group, UFOnesia showed thatdespite the mistaken identification of a normal mundane object (a kite) there was alsosighting of an unidentified object in the area. Both instances showed the groups capabilityin carrying out good basic investigations.
