VERY STRONG.

Very light, but very strong: As carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) has a lower density than steel or aluminium, significant weight savings can be achieved with a functional design.

Carbon fibres made of carbon are extremely strong and have excellent stiffness. They are first spun into threads, then woven together and finally embedded in a plastic matrix.

CARBON FIBRE IMPROVES PERFORMANCE.For BMW M Performance Parts, carbon fibre is a key technology in the development of sporty accessories. Intelligent lightweight construction – e.g. for the roof, bonnet or boot lid – improves the specific power-to-weight ratio of the vehicle and thus increases its dynamics. Carbon fibre also cuts a fine figure with aerodynamic attachments and with exterior and interior surfaces. Here, the material shines above all with its race-typical appearance. Three variants of the material are available:

1 In the CF-SMC-Carbon variant, the hand-crafted production ensures a previously unattained appearance. The careful manual processing of the carbon-fibre material creates the special depth effect and a finely differentiated, multi-layered look.

2 The classic carbon fibre is coated with varnish. This brings out the depth effect and the structure of the fabric particularly well.

3 An open-pored carbon-fibre structure was developed especially for the interiors. The fibres are sealed with a filler and coated with a thin layer of silk matt protective paint. The structure of the carbon-fibre material remains open and can therefore be felt. Visually and haptically these surfaces offer a special experience – especially in combination with Alcantara.

FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS:

The General Grabber AT3 for the BMW X5, developed for off-road use, can be driven as a regular winter tyre.

For the sporty: the Cup tyre with MOT approval and higher coefficients of friction. Its lower proportion of negative tread increases grip and thus performance.

WHEELS: NOT RE INVENTED, BUT FURTHER DEVELOPED. The sporty BMW M Performance Parts wheels shape the character of the vehicle. The reduction of the unsprung mass also improves the dynamic response behaviour. Thanks to modern manufacturing processes, an M Performance Parts wheel is up to 2 kg lighter than a conventionally produced wheel.

In the flow-forming process, a higher density is achieved by rolling the aluminium in the rim bed. This treatment makes the rim bed more stable, thinner and lighter at the same time.

In forging technology, special alloys are compressed at pressures of up to 7000 tons. This allows filigree shapes to be created that are not possible with conventional processes. Forged wheels are therefore standard in high-end motorsport.

For all M Performance Parts wheels, the spokes have a reverse twist. This removes excess material and saves weight. Careful deburring gives the wheels their flawless surface. During further processing, gloss-lathing, gloss-milling and special coatings enhance the appearance. The M Performance Parts branding – as print or 3D milling – completes the sporty look.

Perfect contact with the road is ensured by Original BMW complete wheels with star-marked tyres and TPMS sensors and, depending on the model, also with run-flat tyres. They were developed in cooperation with BMW and adapted to the driving characteristics of the corresponding BMW models.

From forging the blank to flow-forming the rim bed, milling, high-gloss polishing and multicoat painting with a matt finish, approx. 22 working hours are required for the 763 M forged wheel.

Once a year, Goodwood House in the south of England hosts what is probably the craziest motor party in the world – including mountain racing. Old and new racing champions celebrate their skills here. Here, the BMW M Performance Parts Concept made its debut in 2018.

Modern lightweight construction pushes the limits of what is feasible. BMW M Performance Parts and BMW M show what is possible today thanks to the latest technology from racing – with the BMW M Performance Parts Concept based on the BMW M2. It pulls out all the stops of material and manufacturing technology. Its weight is 60 kg less than that of the series production car – a big difference in racing. Many of the components used are part of the current BMW M Performance Parts.

The concept car stands on forged 19'' M Performance complete wheels Y-spoke style 763 M in Frozen Gold matt and semislicks. They are 6 kg lighter

than the standard wheels, reduce unsprung mass and thus improve driving dynamics. The carbon-fibre bonnet saves an additional 8 kg and the M Performance side panels save a further 3 kg. The M Performance carbon-fibre Sport seats upholstered with Alcantara reduce weight in the interior. That saves 9 kg and elegant lightweight rear seats save another 13 kg.

The BMW M Performance Parts Concept is visually refined with fine contrast stitching and gold accents.

ALCANTARA – MATERIAL FOR INTERIOR DREAMS.Alcantara is an innovative material with a wide range of applications. It impresses with its pleasant feel and elegant appearance. Its unique technical characteristics make it the first choice for equipping sporty vehicles.

Alcantara weighs only half as much as leather and thus saves weight. Since a sporty driving style can also be sweat-inducing, the high breathability of the fabric is another advantage. Alcantara seat covers do not heat up too much in summer and feel comfortably warm in winter. The same applies when used as upholstery material for steering wheels, which it also gives a pleasant grip. Further advantages are the even texture and problem-free processing – also in combination with leather or carbon.

Alcantara is extremely robust and very durable even without care. If soiled, it can be cleaned with mild soapy water. And the environment has also been taken into account. Since 2009, Alcantara has been certified as CO2-neutral over its entire life cycle.

Extremely fine and very strong fibres as well as great care during processing are the prerequisites for the high quality and pleasant feel of Alcantara.

WHO INVENTED IT?

Alcantara was invented in 1970 by the Japanese Miyoshi Okamoto and is today the registered trademark of the Italian company Alcantara S.p.A. Since 1972, the entire world production has been manufactured in a specialised factory in Nera Montoro (Umbria), Italy.

DRIVING DYNAMICS HAS MANY FACTORS.

CARBON CERAMIC LASTS LONGER.

The Carbon ceramic brake system saves up to 8 kg in weight compared to the standard brakes, is more powerful and, above all, considerably more stable on the racetrack. In normal use, it lasts an entire car life because its silicon carbide friction coating is virtually wear-free.

The rear spoiler increases the contact pressure and thus contributes to better road holding.

Amateurs often attribute the sportiness of a vehicle to its engine performance. Professionals know: Although a powerful engine is the basic requirement for sporty driving, on the racetrack it quickly becomes apparent that other parameters are just as decisive for a good lap time. The key factors here are low weight, weight distribution, road holding, aerodynamics and, last but not least, the performance of the braking system.

The stronger and more stable the brakes, the longer the driver can stay on the accelerator before the bends. The M Sport brake system in red represents an upgrade of the brake size on the front and rear axle in comparison to the standard brakes. With six pistons

at the front and four at the rear, it significantly improves thermal performance under extreme conditions. The M Performance Sport brake pads are even more uncompromising.

Another factor in driving dynamics is the suspension. Retrofitting the BMW M Performance Sport suspension offers outstanding possibilities for individual suspension tuning. The lowering by the threaded suspension between 5 and 20 millimetres results in a lower centre of gravity, which reduces rolling movements and enables higher cornering speeds. The shock absorbers are adjusted separately for the rebound and compression level, depending on the version.
