6 Project Two: The Engineering Environment This is an individual project. Each student is expected to subscribe to the free daily email alerts offered by the publication, Engineering News. This can be done by visiting the Engineering News website (www.engineeringnews.co.za ). Link has also been posted on ULink. On the top right of the page, a link is displayed with the title “Free Daily Email”. Upon following the link, you will be requested to enter your surname, email address and a security code. You also need to select the publication to which you would like to subscribe (in this case, that would of course be Engineering News). Figure 1, below, illustrates this process.

Project  Two:  The  Engineering  Environment

This  is  an  individual  project.

Each  student  is  expected  to  subscribe  to  the  free  daily  e-‐mail  alerts  offered  by  the  publication,

Engineering  News.    This  can  be  done  by  visiting  the  Engineering  News  website

(www.engineeringnews.co.za).    Link  has  also  been  posted  on  ULink.  On  the  top  right  of  the  page,  a  link  is

displayed  with  the  title  “Free  Daily  Email”.    Upon  following  the  link,  you  will  be  requested  to  enter  your

surname,  e-‐mail  address  and  a  security  code.    You  also  need  to  select  the  publication  to  which  you

would  like  to  subscribe  (in  this  case,  that  would  of  course  be  Engineering  News).    Figure  1,  below,

illustrates  this  process.

Figure  1:  Subscription  to  Engineering  News  free  daily  E-‐mail  alerts

During  the  course  of  the  first  term,  each  student  must  follow  the  daily  newsfeed  offered  by  Engineering

News.    Towards  the  end  of  the  first  term,  each  student  must  then  select  an  issue  or  topic  that  has  been

covered  by  Engineering  News  and  that  interests  them.

There  are  two  parts  required  for  overall  completion  of  this  project.    Each  of  these  is  explained  in  detail

below.

Part  A:  Report

Each  student  must  draft  a  formal  journal  article  on  their  chosen  topic  or  issue.    The  article  must  be  a

formal  investigation  into  the  topic.    The  exact  focus  of  the  article  is  for  each  student  to  decide,  but  the

article  must  clearly  explain  its  goals  and  must  describe  the  importance  of  the  topic  or  issue,  particularly

in  the  field  of  Engineering.    The  articles  must  be  formatted  according  to  the  requirements  of  the  SAICE

journal  (for  Civil  Engineering  students)  and  the  SAIEE  journal  (for  Mechanical  and  Electrical  Engineering

students).    These  guidelines  will  be  placed  on  ULink.    The  article  MAY  NOT  EXCEED  1000  words.

The  academic  article  is  to  be  submitted  on  the  same  day  as  you  deliver  your  presentation  (see  below).

Part  B:  Presentation

In  addition  to  the  formal,  written  report,  each  student  will  also  be  expected  to  deliver  an  oral

presentation,  which  achieves  the  following  aims:

! Describes  the  background  or  context  for  the  topic  /  issue  under  discussion

! Explains  the  importance  of  the  topic  or  issue

! Critically  investigates  the  topic  or  issue

Each  student  will  be  allowed  no  more  than  4  minutes  to  deliver  their  presentation  (a  maximum  of  3

minutes  for  the  actual  presentation  and  a  further  minute  for  questions  or  comments  from  the

audience).

The  presentations  will  take  place  on  the  following  dates:

Session  1:   22  April

Session  2:   28  April

Session  3:   29  April

Session  4:   5  May

Session  5:   6  May

Session  6:   12  May

Session  7:   13  May

Session  8:   19  May

Session  9:     20  May

Session  10:   26  May
