DEFINITION
Individual conference is a clinical teaching method which focuses on the overall development of the individual student with special emphasis to the development of clinical skills.

PURPOSE AND VALUE
To guide in teaching.
To acquire more knowledge.
To discuss problems of a particular student.
To plan patient care.
• To evaluate the programme.
• To discover the interests, needs and the problems of the individual student
• To help the students to help themselves
PRINCIPLES
Establishment of a definite purpose and specific issues to be covered.
Knowledge of the students.
Attitude of the teacher towards student-teacher relationship.
SKILLS NEEDED IN SUCCESSFUL USE OF INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE
• Skill in observation
• Skill in use of setting
• Skill in establishment of rapport
• Skill in meeting resistance
• Skill in establishment of authority
• Skill in recognizing ambivalent feelings
• Skill in use of questions
• Silence as a skillful procedure
USES
Diagnostic and remedial teaching in individual conference.
It can be used to clarify class material.
It helps to supplement instructions.
Discipline among students.
To explain answers to questions of individual students
It can be used as a means of assisting the individual who is having difficulties in keeping up with the class
To understand the relationship between class content of the courses and application to problems
Clinical teaching:• The nursing care study• The nursing care plan• Preparation and orientation to new clinical areas• Evaluation
Chances of teacher showing any prejudice, emotional reaction or bias towards the student.
The student may not tell her entire problems to the teacher.
DISADVANTAGES
ROLE OF CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR IN INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCE
Helps the student to become aware of the value of these conferences
Able to make constructive criticism while assisting the student in evaluating learning experience
Uses the necessary skills for successful conduction of the individual conference.
Presents intellectual challenges to the student and stimulates motivation
The instructor will have concrete examples to point out needs to nursing student.
Assist the nursing student to analyze the nursing situation and her interaction, then she helps the student to formulate new plans.
The instructor maintains the records of the conference which serves as a guide in planning objectives, future conferences and actions.
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR THE TEACHERS
Guiding and supervising the nurses Direct the questions from what the staff
knows to unknown The attitude of the teacher Should use reflection techniques or
introspection Be always prepared to learn Teachers need to update their skills by
getting hands on experience
Never discourage the nurse for her knowledge deficit
If the teacher has information material, share with the nurses
Always complement, if the nurse is able to answer the questions.
Training the experienced staff is a challenge
The teacher may create and use some format, which would help as a guide line for teaching
