TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

M. K. THYAGARAJA BHAGAVATHAR - 2Thyagaraja Bhagavathar became a successful stage star at a very young

age and his play ‘Pavalakodi’ was a roaring success. It was staged not onlyin the Tamil speaking districts of south India but also elsewhere in placeslike Sri Lanka, where also it was also a huge hit.

The heroine was another star S. D. Subbulakshmi who playedPavalakodi. The exchange of wisecracks, not always in the script, wasgreeted with thunderous cheers and people used to place bets as to whowould win the wisecracking game at the end of the play!

The movie ‘Pavalakodi’ (1934) created history for many reasons - itmarked the debut of the first superstar of south Indian Cinema, ThyagarajaBhagavathar, and that of stage and movie star of the early decades, S. D.Subbulakshmi (later Mrs. K. Subramanyam). It also witnessed theintroduction of the sadly neglected pioneer of Indian Cinema, lawyer-turned-film-maker K. Subramanyam as Director.

Though, according to scholars, the story of Pavalakodi and Arjuna findsno mention in the Mahabharata, it was a successful play in Tamil.Bhagavathar had ideas of turning producer with this play, but SM.Letchumanan Chettiar (better known as ‘Lena Chettiar’), a drama contractorof Chettinad, persuaded him to give up such plans and act in his film. It wasproduced by Meenakshi Cinetone and a wealthy distributor Al. Rm.Alagappa Chettiar was the moving force behind it.

Al. Rm. and his partners had a studio in Adyar, which later becameNeptune and Sathya (now MGR Janaki College). It had no compound wallsthen. One of the disgruntled partners took advantage of this situation andwould begin to sound his car’s horn without interruption wheneverSubramanyam said, “Start camera”! Left with no option, the producersbought him out, but then a new crisis arose from the crows of Adyar!

Adyar was more wooded than it is now. Numerous crows hovered overthe food packets meant for the cast and crew of the film. In those days, allthose involved in a movie ate the same food irrespective of their status. Withshooting taking place in bright sunshine, the cast and crew would breakfor food only if a cloud cast its shadow from the sun. The artistes would rushas soon as the cloud cleared, abandoning the food packets, and the crowswould swoop down to peck at the food. Their incessant cawing interferedwith the recording of the dialogues and songs (as artistes had to sing songson location just as they delivered the dialogues). The exasperated Directorbrought on board an Anglo-Indian to shoot an air rifle into the sky to scarethe crows away before he started shooting.

That was not all. There was a credit card in the titles’Crow Shooter - Joe’.Perhaps the only one of its kind in movie history!

The studio had no laboratory and Subramanyam and his team had no wayof knowing whether a shot had been properly canned and they would justhope for the best. Not an ideal way of making movies perhaps, but that washow our pioneers worked ...The post production work was done in Bombay.

Bhagavathar and Subbulakshmi excelled in their acting and singing(music composer Papanasam Sivan). The film was a box office hit andestablished Bhagavathar, Subbulakshmi and Subramanyam as stars ofTamil Cinema.

A solitary print of this historic film is preserved at the National FilmArchive of India at Pune. No songs of this movie (there were more thanfifty, mostly sung by Bhagavathar) are available today since no gramophonerecords of them were made at that time.

Within two years of his debut in Tamil Cinema, Thyagaraja Bhagavatharturned producer and named his unit Trichy Thyagaraja Films. ‘Satyaseelan’(1936) was the first film produced under this banner. A folk tale, this filmsaw Bhagavathar’s fame as a singing star soar. Thus, he was well set onhis way to mega-stardom, and soon iconic status.

M. S. Devasena, who played the heroine, later married the singing starand classical Carnatic musician and ‘Thamizh Isai’ maestro, M.M. DhandapaniDesikar. Interestingly, Bhagavathar played two roles in this film but itcould not be strictly called ‘double role’, as stated by most film historians. He dons the role of the king in whose court a Carnatic musician, againplayed by Bhagavathar, renders a song. The song ‘Sollu Paapaaa’ (RagamPunnagavarali) became one of his immortal melodies (music: PapanasamSivanand lyrics: Janakam Kavikunjaram). However, it ran into troublewith the British Indian Film Censors. That was the period when the IndianFreedom Movement was gaining momentum and the Censors ruthlesslydeleted any scene, dialogue or song that vaguely suggested support for theFreedom Struggle. In this famous song, the Censors objected to the word,‘suthanthiram’ (freedom) in the line ‘Suthanthiram vazhi pera sollupaapaa’ and ordered its deletion. The film had already been completed andwas ready for release. Left with no option, the lyricist substituted the wordwith ‘sugam’ (happiness) and the song was re-shot with the new line.‘Satyaseelan’ was shot in Bombay and directed by B. Sampathkumar.Hailing from the then Maharaja-ruled Mysore State, he directed a few filmsand this was his most successful. Sadly, even film historians have forgottenhim.

The film fared well at the box-office. Interestingly, ‘Satyaseelan’ wasreleased on its second round some three years later with a comedy short‘Bommi Kalyanam’ featuring N. S. Krishnan and T. A. Mathuram, made byNSK. This unusual feature shows how popular NSK had become by 1940.By then, NSK had promoted Ashoka Films in Coimbatore where he madeshort comedy films which he sold to eager producers. When a film did notdo well on its release, producers withdrew it and re-released it afterincluding scenes featuring NSK. This practice, peculiar to Tamil Cinema, brought cheer to many yesteryear producers. That’s why some describedNSK as a ‘film repairer’. Regrettably, no print of this vintage film exists -only some still-photos, MKT’s music, and memories of old-timers havestood the test of time. (To be continued)

By M. A. SADANAND

NO HOLDS BARRED

BAD BUGS’ WINGSThe Bombay blaster Yakub Memon, after a 26-year

crawl, found freedom at last on the day Kalam embraced thegood earth in Rameswaram and celebrated the chancemeeting of their souls by wordlessly singing “....for he is a jollygood fellow....” until they reached Allah through differentroutes.

Allah is reported to have welcomed the new entrants witha smile and a pep talk which neither the reporter nor the newentrants could discern or fathom mainly because his Englishis Usain Boltishly miles superior to that of the creepies andcrawlies of the country. Sashi, don’t step down to the paceof the crawlies. Let us begin the ‘good mornings’ with a cupof special brew coffee and a Tharoori intellectual invigoratingsession.

Sashi and this fellow Sadanand have a common fault line. They both hate ‘death sentence’. What is wrong? Whoappointed a mere man as an executioner? How can youswitch off a life using the cover of law? Law is to protect andnot to destroy, which is what a noose, gun or knife does. Areyou a mere instrument? Are you a heartless machine likethis computer? It obeys what you tap. Is your brain and itscommand to the fingers the ultimate wisdom? A mere mancan’t assume that he is a library and placing his forefingeron a volume suck up the wisdom as through a straw.

The possibility of mistakes should haunt an intelligentman to be careful so that he does not become an unwillingagent of some colossal assumption and egregious error.Thelast two world wars illustrate how a few men thoughtlesslybrought this beautiful world to a few bags of ashes becausethe power-drunk men assumed that the world was createdwas for their pleasure and the billion others were merebaggage for the pleasure of the Gods’ chosen few. It wasthrough the machinations of a grabbing few that the librariesof the nations got their millions of books and the Earth itsbillions of bodies which fed the worms to renew life in all itsglory, beauty and sorrow and infamy. To God, it is a full timejob without rest, 24 hours a day and everyday till eternity.Pity HIM!

Aadhar card machine out of order for weeksSir, Following the announcement by the govt., I approached the

Tahsildar office in Saidapet for obtaining the smart Aadhaar card(plastic card). I was however asked to come after a week as the machineused in printing the card was out of order. When I visited again after aweek, to my dismay I found that the machine was still not functioning. The official at the counter was kind enough to provide his telephonenumber for me to confirm over phone before coming next time to collectthe card. However till date the printing machine is out of order. Wonderwho is to be blamed. I have come to know through reliable sources thatsuch is the situation in several other offices.— V.S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T. Nagar.

A hazard in the middle of the roadSir, There is a 3-foot

tall rusted metal chim-ney erected on a ce-ment foundation andconnected to the un-derground sewage lineclose to the middle ofthe carriageway of 9th

Avenue, oppositeUdayam BrindavanApartments, AshokNagar. The chimneyhas broken in its baseand is likely to toppleat any time. It has re-mained in this condi-tion for the past sev-eral years and is sup-ported by cables crisscrossing at the top without any support. It posesa major hazard to the public as it is located close to the middle of theroad which is known for its heavy vehicular traffic. I appeal to theMetrowater officials to remove the obstruction from the road at theearliest.— Balachandran, Vatsalayam, Papni Apartments, 67th
