Wildlife on Kiawah Island, South Carolina is truly a sight to behold. The island is home to innumerable species including many endangered and protected species. White tailed deer also roam the marshes and maritime forests of the Island, and are often to be seen along Kiawah’s winding roads. Kiawah Island is located 21 miles south of historic downtown Charleston. Accessed from Bohicket road on Johns Island, the retreat is a popular resort destination for those wishing to escape the bustle of the city. What does LEED stand for and who regulates it? LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is regulated by the U.S. Green Building Council
What are the economic benefits to building green? The U.S. General Services Administration found LEED-certified homes use 20 to 30% less energy than a home built to code, with some homes reporting up to 60% savings. LEED homes can qualify for discounted insurance, tax breaks, and other incentives.
What are the LEED rating systems? LEED is relevant to buildings in any stage in their construction or ongoing operations. Each rating system follows a similar structure: sustainable sites; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; indoor environmental quality; innovation in design.
LEED for Homes: LEED is a green building program providing third-party verification of the features and effectiveness of green buildings over multiple visits. It was originally created as a green building rating system for commercial projects. USGBC launched the LEED for Homes in 2008, the first LEED-certified home being a 1,644 SqFt home in Oklahoma City.
Steps to Certification: 1. Project team selects Verification team. 2. Green Rater performs onsite verification, helps project team submit required documentation and completes LEED for Homes workbook. 3. LEED for Homes Provider performs quality assurance over the on-site verification and handles submittal to GBCI for final certification.
4 Levels of Certification: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum
