Indicators for Azimuth Thruster Systems

Azimuth indicators are typically used for indication of the azimuth pod in thruster propulsionsystems. As a marked standard, these indicators are featuring a rotation disc with a pod symbol acting as a pointer. However DEIF can also offer a traditional pointer if requested by users.

The indicators are normally used together with propeller RPM and/or propeller Pitch indica-tors, forming a complete indicating system.

ApprovalsAs all DEIF illuminated indicators, the azimuth indicators have been MED approved. The azimuth types are included in the rudder indication certificate, because they do not have their own group in the directive.

Product range

Alternative mounting types are

available, both front mounted

types for console applications or

BW types for deckhead mounting.

Watertight options (IP66) available

for all types.

Design examples

Both the scales and the discs are customisable.

This means that the indicator can be tailor-

made for the applicator:

Special versions with white base and black

figures and lines are also possible. These are

intended for use in engine control room switch-

boards below deck, where illumination and

other MED requirements are not required.

Transducer typesThe input signal to the indicators is generated from an angular trans-mitter, typically a potentiometer or an encoder with some kind of mechanical interface to the pod. DEIF is able to handle the followingtypes as standard:

1. Single analog signalSignal generated from a single potentiometer and transmitted as 4-20mA, 0-10V, etc. from an amplifier/driver to the indicator. This solution has some inherent problems and is typically used in low-cost solutions.

2. Double analog signal (SIN/COS)Signal generated from a double SIN/COS potentiometer and transmit-ted as 4-20mA, 0-10V, etc. from an amplifier/driver to the indicator. This solution is almost standard as the analog signal type.

3. CANopen signalSignal generated from an optical encoder and transmitted as a CAN-open signal. This signal type is gaining use as more and more solu-tions are using CAN.

Be sure that the scale designs and the indicators electrical mids are fitted to the actual indicator position (aft or fwd bridge).

The standard range of scale and disc combinations includes versions for both fwd and aft bridge layouts. Note that both the visual design and the position of the

disc have been changed on the Azimuth indicator on the aft bridge.

See the Disc Selector Guide on DEIF’s homepage for more standard design suggestions. Alternatively, let us design a version that fits your special requirements.
