Who would have predicted what is happening now? And, we got off to a "really" good start this year, too. Decent weather for our first two events -- and great turnouts, too! Both the New Member Breakfast and the Valentine's Lunch were record turnouts for those events. As I'm sure you all know by now, our schedule of events has been put on hold by the nation closing down. Our visit to the IMS Museum is canceled and hopefully will be rescheduled later in the year when things get back to normal. Fortunately, we didn't have any events scheduled for April (but please be advised, anyone planning on going to a Cincinnati Section event, all their events are canceled until further notice) and we hope it will be over before our next event in June (Tech Session -- please keep reading as there is a date change for this event!). On a very positive note, our Indy 500 Section got a "pat on the back" from Rick Siefert, our Central Regional Director, for being the top section in his region with an almost 10% growth rate. Unfortunately, most sections in the region and country are experiencing minimal growth and we all have a challenge from Rick and MBCA national to begin a program to contact members who are letting their memberships expire and encourage them to re-up! I think we have finally gotten in stride and are seeing an upturn in both new members and member participation at our events. To that I say "thank you all, very much!" Let's hope this bump in the road is over soon and we can get back to enjoying our cars and friendships within the section!! Don't forget to invite other Mercedes drivers to join our club! I have some very important date changes for everyone to be aware of. In hopes all is back to normal our Tech Session is being postponed a week due to a conflict that has come up with our sponsor, Car Wash King. Instead of June 13th, it will now be June 20th. The hours will remain the same, 10am - 2pm with lunch available on site. Our list of vendors includes Vinyl Tear Repair (all interior repair and restoration), Impact Polishes (products for your car's finish), Reggie's Motorworks (high end foreign car repair), Alloy Wheel Repair, Paintless Dent Repair and all cleaning services available from the staff of Car Wash King. I will try to find a "safe" spot to have a board meeting to decide how best to register for this event and sign up with individual vendors ahead of time. This information will be sent out at least 30 days prior to the event. Our next event date change is our pool party at Laczkowski's. In order to revisit the 1/8 scale railroad we visited last year, we will change the date to Sunday, July 26th. We'll be leaving from the south side of Indy in the morning to spend a couple of hours riding a fabulous large scale model railroad and then head over to Larry and Sharol's home for lunch and swimming! Sounds like a fun time!! Please don't forget to register and make your reservations at the West Baden Springs Resort for our September event. I believe the French Lick Weekend will be the event of the year!! Hopefully all this virus stuff will be behind us very soon. Sara and I cannot stress enough our gratitude at the way the section is turning out in greater numbers for our events and how our membership is growing. Thank you to all the members, board and everyone who has pitched in to help and make suggestions for events. Ken PRESIDENTIAL PONDERINGS

Hello, everyone. Who would have predicted what is happening now? And, we got off to a "really" good start this year, too. Decent weather for our first two events -- and great turnouts, too! DAWNING OF A NEW DAY Thanks to all Dave Weaver's efforts to reach out to our local dealership, I am pleased to report that we have the beginnings of a new relationship with Mercedes Benz of Indianapolis (formerly World Wide Motors). Chelsea Skiles, a sales rep at the dealership, is one of our newest members. Many of you met her at our Valentine's Lunch. I had the pleasure of working with Chelsea to fulfill a dream of several years -- buying the almost identical car to a diecast that I purchased and always wanted to own. Except for the wheels, Sara's and my 2017 C300 4Matic is a match to my diecast. Yes, that is Sara in the picture. She was in on the decision because it helped her achieve one of her goals, to reduce the size of our "fleet" by a car (4 down to 3) and get my lift our of our garage. By the way, the lift is for sale if anyone needs to add another car to their garage!

LOVE AND TYPEWRITERS

Our annual Valentine's Day lunch brought 26 attendees

to the Blind Owl Brewery. Decorating our tables were colorful German flags, handmade red, pink, and white hearts from yours truly, and each lady received a beautiful bouquet to take home. It was so good to see new members and veterans getting to know each other, as they shared stories about their cars and their families. There's a lot of love in the Mercedes Club!

The theme of love is prevalent in February, but I see this theme celebrated in many ways around me. Ken and I enjoyed the movie, "Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood", as well as the documentary, "Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood". The movie portrays Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers interacting with a struggling young journalist. It is such an inspiring story of love and redemption. It's hard to picture Fred Rogers angry or in a hurry. He was the consummate listener, totally focused on the child or adult with whom he was speaking. I was so happy to recently come across a book at the library by Tom Hanks. I had not known that he has written articles for major magazines, as well as this book of short stories, Uncommon Type. Each story is very different, but all include some reference to a typewriter.

Our E350 Cabriolet and Lincoln MKC were traded in on our "newer" C300. Mercedes of Indianapolis made the purchase very easy and worked to make a deal I didn't think possible. I give Chelsea very high grades and strongly encourage our members to give her a call if there's anything she can do to help. Also, it’s fun to see the new and enlarged showroom. So, when all this virus stuff is over (or before if you're not leery to venture out), visit Chelsea at the new Mercedes Benz of Indianapolis.

We have all been excited about the weather getting warmer and the plans the Club has for events and outings. Now it is all on hold until we get through this difficult time with the virus. I happened to see an interesting piece on TV that showed Tom Hanks pointing out that he had his typewriter with him when quarantined in Australia. He showed that the name across the top of the typewriter was "Corona." Most of us remember that popular brand of typewriter from years past. Remember how long it used to take to type anything, even on an electric one? Writing a term paper with footnotes was a nightmare!

Recalling the slow process of typing in those days makes me think about this period of enforced isolation we are enduring. It really is slowing us down. It's challenging our creativity - to do our own cooking, to think of ways to exercise without the gym or classes, and to think about how we can be helpful to family members and neighbors who are struggling. All those things we have said we didn't have time to do, we now do - learning to knit or crochet (internet videos), checking out online classes or foreign language tutorials, organizing old photographs and albums, writing actual letters to people - or writing our memoirs! Most of all, let us thank God for the people we live with. They won't be with us forever, and we will someday look back on this time of enforced togetherness as a blessing.
