Asbestos• Regulated when being disturbed by renovation
or demolition– Exceptions for single family homes of less than four
• Urban renewal projects are exception to exception– When a jurisdiction decides to demolish multiple homes during a
specific planning period, it is considered to be an "urban renewal" project
– ALL structures within that specific geographic jurisdiction would be subject to the asbestos rule
– Must have inspections, submit notifications, and conduct asbestos abatement if the accumulative amounts of regulated asbestos containing material meet or exceed the regulatory thresholds
Open Burning• 326 IAC 4-2 prohibits open burning in Indiana• Exemptions to the prohibition are found in
326 IAC 4-3 and include:– burning of vegetation at farms– ceremonial, recreational or
cooking fires– prescribed burns– emergency burning

stewardship and provides information, technical assistance, and guidance to marinas and recreational boaters– collaborative effort between Indiana Department of
Natural Resources and IDEM NWRO– designated Clean Marinas in Indiana

Lake Michigan Lakewide Area Management Plan Program
(LaMP)• A binational program requiring the
development of a Lakewide Area Management Plan (LaMP) for each Great Lake– plan of action to assess, restore, protect,
and monitor the ecosystem health of a Great Lake
– provides support to the Clean Marina Program
Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Ship Canal Area of Concern
Remedial Action Plan Program (RAP)• A binational program for remediating and restoring Great Lakes
areas impacted by historical environmental contamination called Areas of Concern (AOC)
• Northwest Indiana’s Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Ship Canal (GCR/IHSC) area is Indiana’s only AOC, and is currently impaired for 12 Beneficial Uses
• The IDEM NWRO is responsible for developmibg and implementing the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the GCR/IHSC AOC

Lake Michigan Beaches Program• The Federal Beaches Environmental Assessment
and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act helps fund states in developing monitoring and notification programs to help protect our beaches– U.S. EPA administers the funding by providing grants
to states and tribes with coastal waters• IDEM NWRO works to pass through the grant funding to
state, county, and municipal entities to conduct monitoring and notification activities at beaches along Lake Michigan
