    2009 RECORDS - - Iowa is 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten. TheHawkeyes are ranked seventh by the Associated Press and eighthin the USAToday Coaches poll. The Hawkeyes are ranked fourthin the BCS rankings. Indiana is 4-4 in all games and 1-3 in leagueplay. The Hawkeyes beat Northern Iowa (17-16), Arizona (27-17),Arkansas State (24-21) and Michigan (30-28) in Kinnick Stadiumand have road wins over Iowa State (35-3), fourth-ranked PennState (21-10), Wisconsin (20-10) and Michigan State (15-13).

    Indiana is 4-4 with wins over Eastern Kentucky, Western Michi-gan, Akron and Illinois. Losses have come against Michigan, OhioState, Virginia and Northwestern.

    THE SERIES - - This is the 71st meetng between the two schoolsand Iowa leads the series 39-27-4. The Hawkeyes won last yearsgame in Bloomington, 45-9.     IOWA TO HOST INDIANAIowa (8-0, 4-0) will host Indiana (4-4, 1-3) Saturday, Oct. 31 in the first of two

    straight home games. Game time is 11:02 a.m. at Kinnick Stadium (70,585). Ap

    proximately 3,000 tickets remain.

    ON THE TUBEESPN (HD) will televise the game to a national cable audience. Mark Jones and

    Bob Davie will call the action.

    RADIO BROADCASTIowa games are broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network. Gary Dolphin handles

    the play-by-play, with color commentator Ed Podolak and sideline reporter RobBrooks. The Hawkeye Radio Network includes more than 40 stations throughouthe state.

    The game can also be heard on Sirius channel 125 and XM channel 196.

    HAWKEYE HISTORYIowa has played 1,124 games since beginning football in 1889. Iowas overall re

    cord is 576-509-39 (.530). That includes a 363-198-16 (.643) record in home gamesa 213-311-23 (.411) record in games away from Iowa City, a 283-343-25 (.454)mark in Big Ten games and a 246-162-15 (.599) record in Kinnick Stadium.

    IOWA IN BCS RANKINGSIowa is ranked fourth in the BCS rankings this week. The Hawkeyes are the high-

    est rated Big Ten team. The ranking is the highest ever for Iowa. The Hawkeyewere ranked sixth in the initial poll this season and fifth during the final three weeksof the 2002 season.

    The BCS rankings are a combination of the Harris Interactive poll, the USAToday coaches poll and computer rankings. Iowa is first in the computer rankingsand eighth in the Harris poll and coaches poll.

    Prior to this season, Iowa appeared in the BCS top 25 on 24 occasions, includingeight weeks in both 2002 and 2003, seven weeks in 2004 and one week in 2006Iowa was ranked as high as 11th in 2003 and 2004 and 23rd in 2006.

    IN THE RANKINGSIowa is ranked seventh by the Associated Press and eighth in the USA Today

    coaches poll. The Hawkeyes are also eighth in the Harris Poll and fourth in theBCS Standings.

    In pre-season rankings, Iowa was ranked 10th by College Football Insider, 15thby The Kickoff Magazine, 20th by Phil Steeles College Football Preview, 21st inUSA Today coaches poll, 22nd by the Associated Press, 23rd by Athlon Sports and24th by Sports Illustrated.

    Iowa is ranked fourth in the latest Sagarin Ratings. Iowas strength of scheduleis rated 15th toughest and Iowa is one of 12 teams that has registered two or morewins against Sagarins top 30 teams. Iowa has five wins over top 50 teams.

    Around the Big Ten, Penn State is ranked No. 12/10 and Ohio State is 17/15. Inaddition, Arizona is 23/24 and Wisconsin is listed among teams receiving votes.

    BIG TEN HONORS CLAYBORNJunior DE Adrian Clayborn has been named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the

    Week. He is the seventh Hawkeye to be named Big Ten Player of the Week thisseason.

    Clayborn is a 6-3, 282-pound junior from St. Louis. MO. Its the second timethis season he has won league honors. He was also named Special Teams Playerof the Week after he blocked a punt and took it in for a touchdown against PennState on Sept. 26th. In Iowas most recent 15-13 win at Michigan State, Claybornhad four tackles, two sacks for a minus 19 yards and three tackles for losses total-ing 21 yards. He also forced a fumble.

    Iowa had eight Big Ten Players of the Week during the 1997 and 2002 seasonsThe Hawkeyes have had seven this season and also in 2003 and 2008.

    IOWA WINNING THE CLOSE ONESIowa has won four games by three points or less for the first time ever. Iowa won

    three games by three points or less in 2004, 1987 and 1986. In 2004, Iowa wonby margins of 6-4, 23-21 and 29-27, all in conference play. In 1987 Iowa had onepoint wins over Arizona and Wyoming and a two point decision over Ohio StateIn 1986 the Hawkeyes defeated Michigan State and Minnesota by three pointsbefore a 39-38 Holiday Bowl win over San Diego State.

    Iowa, in 1996, won two games by a single point and one game by seven. In 1993Iowa had victories by one, three and four points. The 1985 championship seasonincluded wins by two, three and four points. Iowas 9-1 season in 1956 included

    two wins by a single point and two six point victories.

    IOWA OFF TO FAST START Iowa has opened the season with eight straight wins for the first time ever. The

    Hawkeyes won their first seven games on the way to the 1985 Big Ten title. Theloss, in the eighth game, was at Ohio State. Iowa also won itsfirst seven gamesin 1900, 1921 and 1922. The Hawkeyes played just seven games in both 1921and 1922 and posted a 7-0-1 record in 1900.

    Iowa is 4-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 2002 when the Hawkeyeswon all eight conference games.

    Iowa has won 12 straight games, the second longest streak in the nation. Floridahas 17 straight wins. The Iowa win streak is the longest since a 20-game streakbetween 1920 and 1923.

    Iowa is ranked fourth in the BCS Rankings, its highest ranking ever in the BCSpoll.

    Iowa and Alabama are the only BCS teams with perfect 8-0 records. There arefive additional teams still undefeated.

    Iowas strength of schedule is rated as sixth strongest in the nation, based onpast opposition. Iowa trails Virginia Tech, Washington, Arkansas, Louisvilleand Oklahoma. Iowas eight opponents have compiled a 38-22 record.

    Iowa has won four of its eight games by a total of eight points, with wins byone, two, two and three points. The Hawkeyes have trailed in seven of eighgames, with the largest deficit being 10 points (Northern Iowa, Penn State andWisconsin).

    Weekly Football Press ConferenceIowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz holds his weekly press

    conferences every Tuesday throughout the season.

    The press conferences are held in the auditorium of

    the Hayden Fry Football Complex. Coach Ferentz ad-

    dresses the media at 12:30 p.m. and requested players

    will be available following the press conference. In case

    of poor weather, player interviews will be conducted

    inside the bubble.

    Media need to submit their Tuesday player interview

    requests to Phil Haddy near the conclusion of the previ-

    ous Saturdays football game. Media not in attendance

    should e-mail their requests to Haddy. True freshmen

    are not available for interviews.

    Media can access video highlights of Ferentzs weekly

    press conference, plus player clips and highlights via

    satellite. The time is from 3:30 to 3:45 p.m. (CT). The

    Iowa has collected 22 turnovers in eight games, including 15 pass interceptionsIowa leads the nation in interceptions, is fourth in total turnovers, sixth in turn-over margin (+1.38) and tied for 39th in fumble recoveries. The Hawkeyes had23 interceptions in 13 games last season.

    Iowa is tied for seventh in fewest fumbles lost (three), third in penalty yardsper game (32.9), fourth in fewest penalties per game (4.4), and 10th in time ofpossession (32:33).

    Iowa has lost just three fumbles, two of those in the opening game. Iowa didnot lose its only fumble at Iowa State in week two and lost its only fumble atWisconsin in game seven.

    Iowa did not allow a rushing touchdown for 33 consecutive quarters beforeMichigan had three and Wisconsin one. Iowa allowed seven rushing touchdownsin 2008.

    Iowa has scored 30 points or more twice, with a high of 35 at Iowa State. Six of Iowas opponents have scored 17 points or less. The two opponents who

    scored over 20 points were aided by a defensive touchdown. Iowa has won three prime time games on national television. The Hawkeyes

    defeated Penn State and Michigan on ABC national television and won at Michigan State in a game televised by the Big Ten Network.

    Iowa has had at least one player earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors in sixof eight games.

    IOWA JOINS ANOTHER TOP 20Iowas win over Michigan State gave the Hawkeyes 67 wins since the start of

    the 2002 season, which ties as the 15th highest total in Division I football.     FINAL FOUR TEAM HOLDS REUNION

    The 1979-80 Iowa mens basketball team, which reached the Final Four, is hold-ing its 30-year reunion this weekend. Most of the squad, along with Head CoachLute Olson, will be introduced in pre-game ceremonies. Olson and the Hawkeyefinished that season with a 23-10 record. Guard Ronnie Lester was an all-Americandespite missing much of the season with a knee injury. He re-injured the sameknee in the NCAA semi-finals against Louisville, a game the Hawkeyes eventuallylost. The 1979-80 Hawkeyes are expected to attend Iowas basketball scrimmageSaturday. The scrimmage will take place at Carver-Hawkeye Arena 30 minutesfollowing the football game.

    TICKET UPDATETickets remain for all three remaining home games as Iowa hosts Indiana this

    week, Northwestern (Nov. 7) and Minnesota (Nov. 21). An estimated 1,400 tickets

    IOWA WIN STREAK Iowas 12-game winning streak ranks second best in the nation. Florida holds

    the longest win streak at 17 games. The Hawkeyes are one of seven unbeatenDivision I teams and join Alabama as the only teams with perfect 8-0 records.

    Iowa won its final three regular season games a year ago (Penn State, PurdueMinnesota) and defeated South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl beforeopening 2009 with wins over Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Arizona, Penn StateArkansas State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

    Iowa has the longest road winning streak in Big Ten play with wins in its last fourconference road games (Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State).

    Iowa has won 12 straight games for the first time since winning 20 straighfrom Nov. 6, 1920 to Oct. 20, 1923. That streak began with a home win overNorthwestern and ended with a 9-6 loss to Illinois in the 1923 homecomingcontest. Iowa posted perfect 7-0 records in both 1921 and 1922. Iowa has hadthree streaks of nine or more consecutive wins under Ferentz.

    MOEAKI ON MACKEY MID-SEASON LISTSenior TE Tony Moeaki is one of 22 players named to the John Mackey Award

    Mid-Season Watch List, which was announced Oct. 20. Moeaki collected a careerbest 10 receptions in a win over Northern Iowa. Moeaki gained 83 receiving yardand scored on a six-yard reception early in the fourth period to give the Hawkeyes a17-13 advantage. He returned to action against Michigan after missing three gamesand led Iowa with six receptions for 105 yards and two scores. He was named BigTen Offensive Player of the Week. He had three catches for 55 yards, includinga 24-yard touchdown, in the win at Wisconsin. Moeaki battled through injuriesagain, in 2008, finishing with 13 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown, in ninecontests. He has accumulated 67 receptions for 817 yards and 11 touchdowns dur-ing his injury-plagued collegiate career.

    THREE NAMED TO MID-SEASON TEAMThree Iowa players were named to the CBSSports.com Midseason all-America

    team released Oct. 22. That trio includes offensive lineman Dace Richardsonsenior linebacker Pat Angerer and sophomore safety Tyler Sash.

    Richardson started Iowas first eight games in the offensive line after missingnearly two seasons due to injury. He started at right tackle in Iowas openinggame. He then moved to left guard in Iowas next four games before starting a

    right guard the last three games.Angerer had led an Iowa defense that ranks among the national leaders in severacategories. A starter in 19 straight games, Angerer leads Iowa with 77 tackles andalso has two tackles for loss, one pass interception and a forced fumble. He hasled Iowa in tackles in six of eight games.

    Sash has started every game this season and 18 overall in his two seasons. Heranks among national leaders with five pass interceptions this season. He tied Iowasschool record with three thefts in the win at Iowa State. Sash has 10 career inter-ceptions (the career record is 18). He has already established a career record with264 interception return yards and he ranks third on the team with 57 tackles.

    HAWKEYES EARN WEEKLY RECOGNITION Several Iowa players have earned weekly honors during the first eight weeks of

    the season. Iowa TE Tony Moeaki was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week bythe Nassau County (NY) Sports Commission for his play in Iowas 30-28 winover Michigan. He was also selected as Big Ten Offensive Player of the weekMoeaki caught six passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He had scoringreceptions of 34 and 42 yards. He was also named national Tight End of theWeek by the College Football Performance Award committee and OffensivePlayer of the Week in the Big Ten by ESPN.com.

    PK Daniel Murray was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week vs. Michiganby ESPN.com. Murray made a career-best three field goals against Michiganconnecting from 28, 40 and 41 yards.

Angerer was also namedthe national Defensive Player of the Week by the NationaFootball Writers Association, the Lott Trophy IMPACTPlayer of the Week and was named Linebacker Performerof the Week by the College Football Performance Awardcommittee. The IMPACT Player Award comes with a

    $1,000 check for the Universitys general scholarshipfund. Angerer had a team high 14 tackles, an interception(returned for 38 yards) that set up a touchdown and forceda fumble that helped seal Iowas 21-10 win.

    DE Adrian Clayborn was named Big Ten Special TeamsPlayer of the Week for his play against Penn State. Clayborn also earned the AT&T All-America Player of theWeek award vs. Penn State. Clayborn also was namedESPN.coms Big Ten Special Teams Player of the WeekHe had two tackles and a blocked punt returned for atouchdown against fifth-ranked Penn State. His 53-yardtouchdown return gave Iowa an 11-10 lead in the fourth

    quarter. Clayborn played a solid game in Iowas win overArizona, being recognized on ESPN.coms website as thedefensive player of the week in the Big Ten. He was alsoco-defensive Player of the Week vs. Michigan State.

    DE Broderick Binns, was named ESPN.coms DefensivePlayer of the Week following Iowas win at Penn StateBinns forced Penn State quarterback Darryl Clark tofumble in the endzone and that led to a second quartersafety. He had eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for lossand 1.5 quarterback sacks.

    Punter Ryan Donahue was the Big Tens co-Special TeamsPlayer of the Week following the win over Arizona. Dona-hue averaged 51 yards onfive punts, with a long of 62 yards

    and four kicks of at least 50 yards. Two punts were insidethe 20 and Arizona had just one return for four yards.

    DB Tyler Sash was the Big Tens co-Defensive Player ofthe Week for his play in Iowas win at Iowa State. Sashwas also named the national Defensive Performer of theWeek by the College Football Performance Award committee. He tied Iowas school record with three interceptions(63 return yards). He also caused a fumble and recordedeight solo tackles and two assists, including two tacklesfor loss.

    LB Jeremiha Hunter was the Big Tens co-Special TeamPlayer of the Week following Iowas season-opening winover Northern Iowa. Hunter came up big at the end of the

    game, blocking Northern Iowas second field goal attempon the last play after Broderick Binns had blocked theprevious attempt. Hunter added nine tackles UNI.

    Head Coach Kirk Ferentz

    Kirk Ferentz (pronounced FAIR-rintz,rhymes with parents) is in his 11thseason as head football coach at theUniversity of Iowa. His latest contractextension, signed this past summer, runsthrough the 2015 season.

    Ferentz was honored as the 2002 Asso-ciated Press and Walter Camp NationalCoach of the Year and was the AFCARegional Coach of the Year that seasonas well. He was named Big Ten Confer-ence Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2004. Ferentz guidedIowa to Big Ten titles twice in the last seven years and fiveJanuary bowl games, including three New Years Day bowlvictories (2004 Outback Bowl, 2005 Capital One Bowl and2009 Outback Bowl). Iowa has posted a 67-29 (.698) overall

    mark and a 40-20 (.667) Big Ten record the last seven-plusseasons. Ferentz has guided the Hawkeyes to seven firstdivision finishes.

    Ferentz, at Iowa, holds an overall record of 78-53 (.595) anda 47-37 (.560) mark in Big Ten games. In 13 seasons as a col-lege head coach his career mark is 90-74 (.549). Ferentz, whoboasts the second-most victories by a Hawkeye head coach,coached his 150th career game as a head coach at Indiana(Oct. 11, 2008).

    Forty-eight of Iowas 131 games under Ferentz have beendecided by seven points or less (24-24) and 37 were playedagainst opponents who were ranked in the top 25 at the time(15-22).

    Ferentz joined the Iowa staff after serving as assistant headcoach and offensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens of theNational Football League. He had been part of the Baltimore(Cleveland Browns prior to the move) staff for six years.

    Ferentz was named head coach of the Maine Bears in 1990and held that position for three years. Ferentz was a member ofHayden Frys Iowa staff for nine years as offensive line coach(1981-89). He coordinated Iowas running game during hisfirst coaching stint with the Hawkeyes. Iowa appeared in eightbowl games during the time Ferentz was an Iowa assistant,posting a 4-4 record. A pair of Rose Bowls (1982 & 1986),two Holiday Bowl appearances (1986 & 1987) and a pair ofPeach Bowl visits (1982 & 1988), along with appearances in

    the Gator (1983) and Freedom bowls (1984) highlighted hisprevious Iowa stay. Iowas record in those nine years was 73-33-4 and included two 10-win and two nine-win seasons.

    Ferentz was born in Royal Oak, MI, and attended high schoolin Pittsburgh, PA. Kirk earned his bachelors degree in EnglishEducation from the University of Connecticut in 1978, wherehe was a football captain. Kirk received the DistinguishedAlumnus Award from the Neag School of Education at theUniversity of Connecticut in May, 2009. He was inducted intothe Upper St. Clair High School Hall of Fame in September,2002 and the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hallof Fame in May, 2003.

    HAWKEYES NEAR MILESTONESTwo Iowa senior defensive players, LB Pat Angerer and OLB A.J. Edds are close

    to joining Iowas group of players who have amassed 200 career tackles.Edds heads into the game this week with 195 career tackles, including 60 solo

    tackles and 135 assists. Angerer currently stands at 190 tackles, with 73 solo stopand 117 assists. Angerer has six career interceptions and Edds four.

    Previously, 60 Hawkeye players have 200 career tackles or more.

    On offense, junior WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has 1,494 career receiving yardson 104 receptions. DJK ranks 16th in both career receptions and yards and needsjust six yards to become the 16th Hawkeye player to total over 1,500 yards.

    IOWA RECORDS A DIVISION I FIRSTWith two blocked field goals in the opening win over Northern Iowa, Iowa tied

    a school and NCAA Div. I record. Iowa became the only Division I football teamto blockfield goal attempts on consecutive plays.

    Iowa previously blocked two kicks during a game on five occasions. Most re-cently, DE Kenny Iwebema blocked two Syracuse field goal attempts in Iowas35-0 win over the Orange on Sept. 8, 2007.

    On the national scene, Iowa tied the Division I record for blocked field goals ina quarter. Of the previous four occasions, none occurred on consecutive plays

    Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk SeriesIowa holds a 5-2 advantage in the sixth annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series with Iowa State. Iowa scoredthree points with a win in football and two pointsfor a 2-0 soccer win, while Iowa State won the vol-leyball match.

    Iowa holds a 3-2 advantage in the in-state competi-tion that began in 2004-05. The Hawkeyes capturedthe Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series a year ago by a 21-4margin.

    Last season, Iowa captured victories in football, wom-ens soccer, womens cross country, mens basketball,womens basketball, wrestling, womens gymnastics(twice) and softball. The Cyclones recorded wins involleyball and mens cross country.

    Along with the series win a year ago, Iowa capturedthe inaugural Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series (13-8) in2004-05 and won again in 2006-07 (13-8). IowaState won the competition in 2005-06 (13-8) and2007-08 (18-9).

    The 13-event series awards two points (except foot-ball, which is worth three) to the winning school ineach head-to-head match-up between the two insti-tutions. Additionally, two points are awarded to aninstitution if the graduation rate of its student-athletesis greater than the national average as reported eachfall by the NCAA. Womens tennis has been added tothe competition for the first time in 2009-10.

    A commemorative Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series Cup,

    which stands 31 inches tall and weighs 19 pounds, isdisplayed on the winning teams campus for an entireyear after a victory. Replica cups are also presentedas traveling trophies for individual victorious teamsin the head-to-head competition.

    INDIANA COACH BILL LYNCHBill Lynch is in his third season as the Indiana head coach. Lynch was named

    Indianas 27th head football coach on June 15, 2007. In his first season, he guidedIndiana to a 7-6 record and its first bowl appearance (Insight Bowl) in 14 years.

    Lynch has posted a 14-19 mark with the Hoosiers. He is in his 17th season as acollege head coach with a career mark of 95-86-3 (.527). He previously was the headcoach at Butler (36-12-3, 1985-89), Ball State (37-53, 1995-02) and DePauw (8-2

    2004). Hiss teams have won or shared seven conference or divisional titles.Lynch, who is in his fifth season on the Indiana staff, served as interim headcoach for two games in 2006 and led the Hoosiers during 2007 spring practiceHe served as the assistant coach, offensive coordinator and tight ends coach withthe Hoosiers in 2005-06. This is Lynchs second stint at Indiana, as he was theHoosiers quarterbacks coach in 1993-94.

    IOWA, INDIANA NOTES Indiana won on its last visit to Kinnick Stadium, posting a 38-20 win in 2007

    to spoil Iowas homecoming. Iowa ranks sixth in the nation in turnover margin and Indiana is 23rd. The

    Hoosiers also rank 20th in QB sacks allowed and 26th in tackles for loss. Iowaranks 51st in QB sacks, collecting four last week in a win at Michigan State.

    Indianas Ray Fisher ranks fourth in the nation in KO returns (38.1) and DEJammie Kirlew ranks seventh in tackles for loss (1.7 per game). Iowa and Indiana both average 23.6 points per game. While Iowa rallied to win on the last play of the game last weekend at Michigan

    State, Indiana lost at Northwestern when the Wildcats converted a 19-yard fieldgoal with 21 seconds remaining.

    Iowa has won four games by a combined eight points. Indiana has a three poinloss and a one point loss among its four defeats.

    Two Hawkeye players celebrate birthdays this week. Shaun Prater turns 20 onOct. 27 and James Hurt celebrates his 20th birthday on Oct. 28.

    Iowa has allowed only one 100-yard rusher this season, as Iowa States AlexanderRobinson rushed 19 times for 100 yards in Iowas 35-3 win. Last season MainesJhamal Fluellen (21-104) was the only opponent to rush for 100 yards.

    Iowas roster includes three players from Indiana, senior LB A.J. Edds (Green-wood), sophomore Jewel Hampton (Indianapolis) and sophomore PK TrentMossbrucker (Mooresville). Hampton will not play this season due to injuryand Mossbrucker is a redshirt candidate. There are no Iowans on the Indianaroster.

    THE LAST MEETINGIowa scored the final 28 points, scoring touchdowns on four of its five second-half

    possessions, to earn a convincing 45-9 victory at Indiana a year ago.The Hawkeyes had two running backs eclipse 100 yards rushing for the first time

    since their 2007 season-opener vs. Northern Illinois in Chicago (Albert Young andDamian Sims). Shonn Greene and Jewel Hampton combined for 229 yards andfour touchdowns. Greene had 23 attempts for a game-high 115 yards, including

    a 12-yard scoring run. Hampton, an Indianapolis native, had 22 carries for 114yards and touchdown runs of one, one and 10 yards.Iowa took a 17-9 lead into the break. Iowa

    PK Trent Mossbrucker converted a 26-yardfield goal and Greene (12 yards) and Hampton(one yard) each ran for a score in the first half.Indiana PK Austin Starr made a 46-yard fieldgoal and QB Kellen Lewis found WR Ray Fisherin the end zone from 17 yards out to close thefirst-half scoring.

    It was all Iowa the final 30 minutes. Iowa QBRicky Stanzi connected with WR Andy Brodellfor a 34-yard scoring strike to push its lead to

    24-9. On Iowas next possession, Stanzi threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to TEBrandon Myers to make the score 31-9 after three periods. Hampton posted scor-ing runs of one and 10 yards in the fourth quarter.

    Stanzi completed 12-20 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis completed 13-18 passes for 108 yards and a score in the first half, but did not play thesecond half due to injury.

    Brodell caught four passes for a game-high 95 yards and a score, while Myershad four receptions for a career-high 64 yards.

    Defensively, DB Amari Spievey collected a career-high eight tackles, all solostops. DT Mitch King had six stops, including three for a minus 19 yards and aQB sack. Iowas defense held the Hoosiers without a first down on six of theirfirst eight possessions.

    MSU took over at its own 40 after a long kick return, but faced a third and 18 afterconsecutive QB sacks. A pass and lateral play gained 38 yards and the Spartanswould later score their only touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Kirk Cousins toBlair White with 1:37 to play.

    Iowas game-winning drive began with a 16yard Stanzi to McNutt completion to the Iowa46. After a short run by Stanzi and an incom-

    plete pass, Stanzi connected with Trey Strossfor a 21-yard gain. A 16-yard pass to DerrellJohnson-Koulianos moved the ball to the MSU15 and a holding penalty gave Iowa a first andgoal at the seven. After three straight incompletepasses, Stanzi found McNutt on a slant patternfor the winning score. The completion markedIowas first fourth down conversion of the season.

    Iowas offense was led by RB Adam Robinson, who rushed 27 times for 109 yardsboth career bests. Stanzi completed 11-27 passes for 138 yards and a touchdownJohnson-Koulianos led Iowa receivers with 59 yards on three receptions and headded 48 yards on two KO returns.

    Iowas defense allowed MSU just 85 net rushing yards while collecting four QB

    sacks. LB Pat Angerer led Iowas defense with nine tackles. DE Adrian Clayborn registered three tackles for loss, including two QB sacks, and was namedco-Defensive Player of the Week in the Big Ten.

    EXTRA POINTS With the win, Iowa leads the series against Michigan State by a 21-18-2 margin

    Iowas victory is the first for the Hawkeyes in East Lansing since a 21-7 win in1995. The home team had won the previous nine games in the series.

    Iowa wins with a touchdown on the last play of the game for the first time sincethe 2005 Capital One Bowl. In that contest the Hawkeyes scored on a 56-yardpass from Drew Tate to Warren Holloway for a 30-25 win.

    Dating back to 2008, Iowa has won its last six games away from Iowa Cityincluding wins at Minnesota, Iowa State, Penn State, Wisconsin and MichiganState, and over South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl. Iowa has allowedjust 46 points in those games.

    Michigan States second field goal of the game (23 yards) came after the Spartanshas a first and goal at the Iowa one. Including an offside penalty on Iowa, MSUran four straight plays for no gain before getting the field goal.

    Iowa RB Adam Robinson had career bests in rushing attempts and yards (27-109). He had 20 attempts at Wisconsin and 101 rushing yards vs. Arizona. Thisbecomes his second game this season with over 100 rushing yards (Arizona).

    Iowa has outscored its opponents 113-51 in the second half through eight gamesThe 15 points scored at Michigan State mark the lowest total for Iowa this season(20 at Wisconsin).

    Iowas opponents have scored the first points of the game in all four Hawkeyeroad games this season. Iowa State, Wisconsin and Michigan State opened witha field goal, while Penn State started with a touchdown. Iowa scored 35 straighpoints at Iowa State, 21 at Penn State and 20 at Wisconsin.

    Iowa PK Daniel Murray had a 37-yard field goal in the second period and two20-yard kicks in the fourth. He tied his career-high of three field goals, whichcame earlier this season in a win over Michigan (in four attempts). He madefield goals of 37 and 48 yards at Wisconsin. He made 2-3 field goals in a winat Penn State. The 48-yarder at Wisconsin is a career best. Murray has made14-18 field goal attempts this season and all 19 PAT kicks.

    DE Adrian Clayborn had another solid game for Iowa, collecting four tacklesincluding three tackles for loss and two QB sacks. He forced a fumble in thethird period as well and was named co-Defensive Player of the Week in the BigTen.

    NORTHWESTERN RALLIES PAST INDIANA

    Northwestern rallied for a 29-28 win over Indiana, connecting on a 19-yardfield goal with 21 seconds remaining for a 29-28 win in Evanston. Indiana had achance to win on the final play of the game, but a 59-yard field goal attempt wasshort as time expired.

    Indiana got off to a fast start, leading 21-0 just minutes into the second periodDarius Willis scored on a 70-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. After anexchange of punts the Hoosiers made it 14-0 on a one-yard run by QB Ben Chap-pell. That score was set up by a 35-yard Ray Fisher punt return. Willis added athree-yard run for a 21-0 Indiana advantage.

    After Northwestern scored its first points on a field goal, Fisher added a 93-yard KO return to make the score 28-3. Northwestern closed the gap to 28-17 ahalftime.

    Indiana was unable to score in the second half as Northwestern rallied. TheWildcats scored on a 51-yard pass early in the fourth period to pull within 28-26Indiana failed to convert a fourth and three at the Northwestern 33 with 7:04 re-maining and the Wildcats began their game winning drive.

    Willis led Indiana with 103 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Chappell com-

    pleted 16-27 passes for 163 yards. Matt Mayberry led the Hoosier defense with13 tackles, including two for loss. Mayberry, Austin Thomas and Nick Polk eachhad pass interceptions.

    IOWA UNDER THE LIGHTS

    Iowa played three games under the lights in 2009 and won all three. Iowa won aPenn State (21-10 on ABC national) in its first night contest. The Hawkeyes defeatedMichigan 30-28 in Kinnick Stadium on Oct. 10, also on ABC national televisionThe 15-13 win at Michigan State was televised by the Big Ten Network.

    from Iowa City. That includes wins at Minnesota, IowaState, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State, along witha victory over South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl. Inthose wins Iowa allowed just 46 total points.

    Iowas win at No. 4/5 ranked Penn State on Sept. 26 markedIowas first road win over a team ranked in the top five in thenation since 1990. That season the Hawkeyes scored a 54-28win at fifth-ranked Illinois.

    IOWA DEFENSE SOLID Iowas defense has been solid through eight games. Iowa

    leads the nation with 15 pass interceptions. The Hawkeyesrank sixth in turnover margin (+1.38), fifth in pass effi-ciency defense (92.7) and 14th in scoring defense (14.8)

    and 17th in pass defense (174.2). Iowa is also 18th in totadefense (296.5) and 12th in net punting (40.6).

    After allowing one touchdown in the opening win (secondperiod), the Hawkeye defense did not allow a touchdownfor nine straight quarters. That streak ended late in thewin over Arizona when the Wildcats scored with 1:53 toplay.

    Penn State scored a touchdown on its first offensive playbut was only able to add a field goal later in the first periodbefore being shutout over the final three quarters.

    Arkansas State scored 21 points, but seven of those werescored by the defense. ASU had just 80 rushing yards afterentering the game averaging over 190 yards per game.

    Wisconsin scored just 10 points (all in the second quarter)rushed for just 87 net yards and gained 230 yards totaloffense. The Badgers entered the game averaging 31.3points, 200.7 rushing yards and 422.3 yards total offenseWisconsin had negative two rushing yards and 58 yardstotal offense in the second half.

    Iowa held Michigan State to 85 net rushing yards and 13points. MSU averaged 29.3 points and over 400 yardstotal offense in its first seven games.

    Dating back to 2008, Iowas defense did not allow a rushing touchdown in 33 consecutive quarters, including thefinal 13 quarters last season and 20 quarters this seasonMichigan broke the string with a first period rushing touch-down.

    Penn State had no first downs in the second period. In thefourth period, four consecutive PSU drives ended with a

    blocked punt (returned for an Iowa touchdown), interception, lost fumble and interception.

    The Iowa defense held Arizona to eight first downs, 148net rushing yards, 253 yards total offense and 2-12 on thirddown conversions.

    Iowa is plus 11 in turnover margin, with 15 interceptionsand seven fumble recoveries. Iowa had five interceptionsat Iowa State and three at Penn State and Wisconsin. Therewere no turnovers in the win at Michigan State.

    Linebackers Pat Angerer and A.J. Edds are the only seniorstarters on the Iowa defense.

    SPREADING THE OFFENSE

    Iowa started the same 11 players on offense in wins overArizona and Penn State before having two changes againstArkansas State. The starting offensive line has includedsenior center Rafael Eubanks, senior guard Dace Richard-son, junior guard Julian Vandervelde and senior tackle KyleCalloway in three games, with redshirt freshman tackleRiley Reiff starting three games for junior left tackle BryanBulaga, who returned to action vs. Arkansas State. ReiffRichardson and Vandervelde alternated at the guard spotsin the most recent three wins.

    The offensive line led the way for the Hawkeyes to rushfor 163 net yards in the win at Penn State, against a PSU

    defense that ranked among the national leaders and had noallowed a rushing touchdown in the first three games. Iowa is averaging 9:01 minutes of possession time in the

    fourth period. Iowa has had over 10 minutes of posses-sion in the fourth period of three games, with a season bes11:33 at Michigan State. Iowa also had 10:55 in fourthquarter possession at Wisconsin and 10:29 possession timevs. Arizona in the final period.

    Iowas running back tandem of Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher gives the team a balanced attack. Robinsonleads the team by averaging 78.6 yards per game, whileWegher averages 40.1. Robinson has scored five touch-downs and Wegher three. Both have proven to be capable

    receivers, combining for 19 receptions. Robinson rushedfor over 100 yards vs. Arizona and Michigan State andWegher had over 100 yards at Iowa State.

    In the 35-3 win at Iowa State, Iowa quarterbacks RickyStanzi and James Vandenberg completed passes to 12 different receivers. That is the highest number of Iowa playerto have at least one reception in a game since 13 differenHawkeyes had at least one reception in a 43-7 win overIowa State Sept. 13, 1986 in Kinnick Stadium. Nine players had at least once reception against Michigan. Overallseven Hawkeyes have at least one pass reception.

    HAWKEYES RANK HIGH IN GRADUATION RATES

    The Iowa Hawkeyes were among the nations leaders in academicsuccess for college football teams that competed in bowl games fol-lowing the 2008 season.

    Iowa ranked 16th in graduation rate for its football student-athletes,according to data collected last fall by the NCAA among the 68college football teams that participated in the 34 college footballbowl games.

    Iowas graduation rate of 75% ranked third among teams that ap-peared in the 2008 final top 25 rankings.

    THREE HAWKEYES EARN ACADEMIC HONORS

    A year ago, three Iowa players were named to the ESPN The Maga-zine/CoSIDA District Seven first all-academic team.

    Under Kirk Ferentz in the last 10 years, 13 Hawkeye players havecombined to earn academic all-America honors on 24 occasions.Four players, DL Aaron Kampman, OL Andy Lightfoot, LB MikeKlinkenborg and DB Adam Shada, were three-time honorees. Cur-rent junior Julian Vandervelde earned regional honors a year ago asa sophomore.

    Iowa, in 2006, was the only Division I program in the nation tohave three players earn first team academic all-America recognition.In addition, Iowa players have been honored 130 times over the past10 seasons with academic all-Big Ten recognition.

    Earlier this season the 12 players included seven wide receivers, three tight endsone running back and one fullback. In 1986 the 13 receivers included sevenwide receivers, three running backs, two tight ends and one fullback.

    WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos matched a career-high with eight receptions for113 yards at Wisconsin in his first start of the season. DJK now has 104 careerreceptions for 1,494 yards. He ranks 16th in career receptions and yardage. InIowa wins over Penn State in 2008 and 2009 DJK had 10 receptions, all giving

    Iowa a first down. Iowa has had five different players lead the team in receiving in its eight games

    Those players include TE Tony Moeaki vs. Northern Iowa (10-83-1 TD) andMichigan (6-105-2 TDs); WR Trey Stross at Iowa State (4-69); WR Colin Sande-man vs. Arizona (5-47); WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos at Penn State (3-50), aWisconsin (8-113-1 TD) and at Michigan State (3-59); and WR Marvin McNutvs. Arkansas State (4-121-2 TDs). Moeaki, McNutt and Johnson-Koulianohave all had over 100 receiving yards in a game.

    Iowa did not have a fumble in wins over Arizona, Penn State, Arkansas Stateand Michigan. The Hawkeyes lost both of their fumbles in the opening winover Northern Iowa and did not lose possession of their only fumble in the winat Iowa State. Iowa lost its only fumble in the win at Wisconsin.

    Iowa has not been fooled in the kicking game this season, as two opponent fakeshave failed to gain a first down. Arkansas State failed to convert a fake punt inthe third period of its 24-21 loss at Iowa. Arizona attempted a fake field goain a 27-17 loss at Iowa.

    In addition, four opponents have tried an onside kick, with Iowa recovering inwins over Iowa State, Arizona and Arkansas State. Michigans onside attempwent out of bounds, giving Iowa possession.

    Iowa has blocked three kicks. That included back-to-backfield goal attemptsby Northern Iowa in the closing seconds of a 17-16 win.

    Iowa blocked a punt in the win at Penn State, with DE Adrian Clayborn blockingthe kick and scoring on a 53-yard return.

    TRUE FRESHMEN IN 2009

    Iowa has used three true freshmen this season. They are DB Micah Hyde, RB

    Brandon Wegher and WR Keenan Davis. Wegher and Davis both scored touch-downs in Iowas win at Iowa State and Wegher added a touchdown vs. ArizonaWegher (15-101 at ISU) became the second Iowa RB in two seasons to rush forover 100 yards in a game as a true freshman. Jewel Hampton had 114 rushingyards a year ago in a win at Indiana.

    The Hawkeyes had seven true freshmen play a year ago. Iowa also had seventrue freshmen play in 2003 and 2000.

    HAWKEYES OUT WITH INJURIESSenior RB Jayme Murphy, sophomore RB Jewel Hampton

    and Junior DB Jordan Bernstine will miss the 2009 seasondue to injuries. In addition, wide receiver/return specialistPaul Chaney, Jr. was injured in the Oct. 10 win over Michiganand will also miss the remainder of the season.

    Bernstine (5-11, 205) was listed as a first team cornerbackfollowing spring practice before suffering an ankle injury atthe start of fall drills. He saw action in seven games a yearago, recording 12 tackles. He had a pass interception againstMichigan State. Bernstine did not use a redshirt at Iowa in2007, recording nine tackles as a true freshman.

    Hampton (5-9, 210), who will miss the season with a kneeinjury, was listed as the first team running back followingspring practice. He rushed 91 times for 463 yards and seven

    touchdowns in 2008 as a true freshman. The seven rushingtouchdowns are an Iowa freshman record.

    Murphy (5-11, 210) will miss this season due to a backinjury. Murphy had just seven rushing attempts a year agobut made his mark throughout his career with his outstandingplay on Iowas special teams.
