Breathless Auckland left gasping for moreDEV NADKARNIAucklands Hindi music fans will undoubtedly remember the countrys first SEL concert for a long time to come. What a night it was as Bollywoods celebrated musical triumvirate belted out number after unforgettable number sending the sellout audience into a foot tapping frenzy late into the night. The well organised concert began at 7-45pm at the choc-a-block Telstraclear Events Centre, just 15 minutes past the scheduled time a refreshing departure from the delayed starts that is de riguer for celebrity concerts of this sort. From the word go the trio fired on all cylinders with maestro Shankar connecting with the audience straight away. As the concert went into top gear with his repertoire of smash hit numbers, Shankar cajoled and coaxed the audience to sing, sway and dance with him a thing which they did with great enthusiasm. Fresh from a sellout performance in Sydney, the trio on more than one occasion said that the Auckland audience was the most amazing one they had ever faced. This was gamaks, taranas and superfast sargams besides rhythmic bols and boltaans, the latter which he dabbled in with the superbly talented drummers and percussionists. His virtuosity in extempore improvisation even in his well known numbers to make them special for a live performance were pure genius, which would have elicited a hundred wah-wahs from connoisseurs. But bad sound tuning, which had his microphone low on volume, subdued the finer points of his softer vocalisations, much to the chagrin of several listeners in the audience. Bad sound management is the bane of Auckland sound contractors when it comes to traditional Indian soirees. Many a great concert has been a victim of this unfortunate shortcoming. A number of people complained during the interval and the versatile singers mic was set to a higher volume in the second half much

a statement as sincere as it can be because Shankar is a straight shooter there are simply no airs about him. He speaks from the heart and there was no doubt that he meant it. The trio and their talented ensemble performed every number that they had promised all along in their promos in the pages of Indian Weekender, including the title theme of the concert, the legendary Breathless, which catapulted Shankar into his permanent place in Bollywoods stellar firmament.

The trios hit numbers are so many over the years since their big break in Dil Chahta Hai that it would have been impossible to sing all of them. But Shankar obliged by stringing along about a dozen of them of them sampler style in a panorama of their musical hits down the years. Shankars training in both forms of Indian Classical music Hindustani and Carnatic shone through brilliantly in his incredible range of vocal inflections: alaps, taans,

DHB performance welcomedNational MP based in Manukau, Kanwal Bakshi, has expressed satisfaction that Counties Manukau DHB has lifted its performance against Nationals health targets. Counties Manukau DHB has improved in several areas, which is good news for patients. Particularly impressive gains have been made in the area of providing better help for smokers to quit, Mr Bakshi says. Our own DHB has also immunised 91 per cent of our two year olds, increased the number of patients seen, and treated or discharged from our Emergency Departments within six hours to 97 per cent We are both really pleased that Counties Manukau DHB is working so hard to achieve against our health targets. The latest results, which cover the three months to December 2011, have shown record improvements nationwide. District Health Boards are focusing even more strongly on patients, and patients are benefiting from the Governments $1.5 billion extra funding over the past three years Nationwide, Emergency Departments (ED) recorded their best ever result. Of the 238,000 patients who went to an ED, around 220,000 were admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours. That is 92 per cent of patients, up from 90, against a target of 95 per cent. On top of this every cancer patient ready for radiation treatment started within four weeks of their first specialist assessment. This is the world gold standard for cancer treatment, Mr Bakshi said.

The horrific car accident last month near the Waikato town on Patetonga has prompted Plunket to restate the importance of child car seats. This incident is a stark reminder for parents and caregivers to buckle children into a car seat every time they are riding in the car, no matter how short the journey, says Sue Campbell, Plunkets National Child Safety Advisor. Babies need to be in a car seat from their very first ride, she says. The law in New Zealand requires all children under 5 years of age to be restrained in an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and weight for every ride. Not all car seats fit all vehicles so it is really important to try it in your vehicle before you buy or hire it, be sure to read the manual and follow the instructions for installing it. The safest place for all car seats is in the back seat, so that they are away from airbags that are in car dashboards. Sue says that for a car seat to perform correctly in an accident it needs to be installed correctly. We recommend that parents and caregivers seek expert assistance from a Child Restraint Technician for a free check to ensure that your child's car seat fits your vehicle and is installed correctly. They can also advise about the best car seat for your childs age and weight, and one that is best suited to your car. Child restraint technicians are available through Plunket Car Seats, and at a number of other hire outlets or retailers. It is a totally free service. Sue says that Plunket recognises that the cost of child restraints is beyond the means of some families but says that assistance is available.

Auckland cant wait for an encore from KK

Rarely has a Bollywood singing sensation been back to Auckland by popular demand so soon as the fabulous singer-entertainer KK. Having transported his fans and Auckland audiences to cloud nine less than a year ago, the star is coming back to the city on May 12 in deference to the wishes of his growing New Zealand fans. Last July, KK singlehandedly mesmerised the audience for more than 3 hours, unlike other similar big-ticket artistes performances

that are often interspersed by sideshows of accompanying talents or local artistes. KKs ability to instantaneously connect with his audience and his seemingly boundless energy typified by the springy feet with which he traversed all corners of the performing stage was a great hit with the predominantly young audience young in age and young at heart. The audience sang with him, danced to his singing and seemed to enjoy every moment of his renditions, his

nuances, his antics and his jokes. The singer displayed his versatility in the sheer breadth of his repertoire. From the contemplative Awaarapan Banjaaraapan through the foot-tapping peppiness of It's the time to disco to the emotional Alvida, KK covered the gamut of genres, pleasing his fans to bits. For much of the second half, the audience was on its feet, often surging toward the stage to be close to the star performer in true rock concert style. Those scenes will undoubtedly be imprinted in the minds of the audience just as the music will ring in its ears for a long time. Music and entertainment writer Perdy Mohindru, who was at the concert last year says, The musical evening at The Telstra Clear Events Centre in Manukau, Auckland on July 9 2011, was undoubtedly one of the best performances of an Indian musician to be ever witnessed in Aotearoa. KKs passionate, flawless and powerful singing ensured that the audiences were glued to their seats for most part of the show. His rock influence from Guns N Roses, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd was clearly evident. Auckland is most eagerly looking forward to an encore from one of Indias most talented entertainers ever.

Help create a better future for AucklandAucklanders can now have their say on proposals included in Auckland Councils first draft Long-term Plan (LTP) 2012-2022. Submissions have opened on the document, which outlines councils prioritised activities and projects over the next 10 years. Staff and councillors have scrutinised and debated the content of this first 10-year plan for months, now we want to hear the communitys views, says Chairwoman of the Strategy and Finance Committee, Councillor Penny Webster. If you go to your local park, enjoy a free community event, or like attending one of our fabulous community galleries, the draft LTP includes information about how we plan to support and develop these in the future. Through the draft Longterm Plan, people can find out what investment is proposed for local projects including libraries, parks, stormwater and flood protection, heritage, arts and culture, community development and road and footpaths. At a regional level, the council proposes a range of projects aimed at boosting Aucklands economy, unlocking public transport and unclogging roads and enhancing the regions urban and natural environments. This is the beginning of Aucklands transformation, says Cr Webster. The draft LTP also looks at how council manages its finances including changes to regulatory fees and charges, such as dog registration fees and the move to a single rating system. Implementing a new rating system that is fair across the board is a major challenge and we know that, for some people, there will be significant increases but we have proposed several options to minimise those increases, says Cr Webster. Overall the council is projecting a low 3.6 per cent rates increase. However, the move from eight different systems to a single system will mean differing levels of change for different property owners. Auckland Council is requesting the government make a minor change to the Auckland legislation to stop people facing steep changes in rates as a result of amalgamation. To give people an overview of how the proposed changes and how they could impact on their rates in 2012/13 the council has developed an online rate guide. Submissions close at 4pm, 23 March 2012. For more information, to make an online submission and to access the rate guide, go to: www. aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/longtermplan The plan can be viewed online, at council libraries, service centres and local board offices. A summary, including a submission form, is also being delivered to households this weekend and also available online.

Congress routed in key states UP, PunjabNew Delhi: Regional political parties would rule two most politically important northern states in India with a young Akhilesh Yadav crafted Samajwadi Party sweeping the polls in Uttar Pradesh pouring cold waters in the dreams of Rahul Gandhi-led Congress, while the Akalis returned to Punjab in alliance with the BJP. Manipur is the only state where Congress won decisively even as it got a wafer thin edge in Uttarakhand and said would try to form a government there with Independents and others. In Goa, Congress was trounced by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-Mahrashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) combine. The results of elections in five states were counted and declared on Tuesday. Congress bit the dust in Uttar Pradesh despite a valiant effort by poster boy Rahul Gandhi, as the Samajwadi Party of electoral politics hardened Mulayam Singh Yadav swept the polls in the heartland state riding on the strategy of young leader and son Akhilesh Yadav. However, indications are that father Mulayam Singh Yadav will be the next chief minister of the state that the party won back. Out of the 403 seats, SP won 226 and hence needs no one's support to form a government. The man was loud and clear for the SP. While the 72-year-old Mulayam Singh Yadav would be the chief minister for the fourth time, his son Akhilesh Yadav has emerged as the star politician and hailed in media as the most matured among young leaders who successfully married old time-tested politics with modern ideas. The chief minister Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) , mired in countless corruption scandals and misgovernance, had secured 80 seats, disastrous fall of 126 seats when compared to last elections fare. The Congress alliance, meanwhile, got 38 seats, a rise of just six seats compared to the last time. The party fared since it had expected to do much better riding on party scion Rahul Gandhis extensive canvassing. Rahul Gandhi accepted the responsibility of poor showing in UP once again. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance, despite a heady start after initial counting, got 47 seats, a dip of 4 compared to results from last time. Sweeping the polls in Uttar Pradesh, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav said people have voted in favour of their party manifesto and "we will fulfill it and give a new face to the state." History created in Punjab The ruling alliance of Shiromani Akali DalBharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) returned to power in Punjab winning 68 seats in all and creating history of sorts by becoming an alliance that was for the first time in 40 years voted back to power for a second consecutive term. While the SAD bagged 56 seats, the BJP got 12 in the 117 member assembly. Congress has got 46 seats. Others got three seats. Prakash Singh Badal, 84, will remain the chief minister. He celebrated the victory with a jeep ride in his eponymous native village Badal. The victory came to Prakash Singh Badal despite splits in his party. While his son and party president Sukhbir Singh Badal was instrumental in the win, his nephew Manpreet Singh Badal had quit the Akali Dal and formed his own party, People's Party of Punjab (PPP). However, PPP failed to open any account. The Congress received a major blow in the north Indian state where they were expecting better results. Neck-to-neck in Uttarakhand Uttarakhand witnessed a neck-and-neck battle between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress for the hot seat with the latter ending the day one seat ahead and claiming that it would form the next government with the help of Independents and other parties. It is Congress 32 and incumbent BJP 31 in Uttarakhand where the BJP chief minister BC Khanduri lost to SS Negi of the Congress from Kotdwar seat. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) posted wins in 3 seats in the north Indian state. Other parties and Independents registered wins in 4 seats. Congress needs their support to form the government. Uttarakhand has a 70-member assembly. Congress sources said the party would seek the support from three successful independent candidates as well as UKD, which won one seat, for governmentmaking. Congress back in Manipur The Congress returned to power in Manipur, a state wracked by insurgency and economic blockades, under the leadership of chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh. The Congress won 42 of the total 60 seats while their ally at the centre and in West Bengal Trinamool Congress won seven seats as results were declared on Tuesday. The Naga Peoples' Front (NPF) won four seats while the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) had won five. Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) got one seat. Goa goes to BJP As highly anticipated, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-Mahrashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) combine is all set to form a government in Goa after marking a historic win by securing 26 seats (along with Independents) in the 40-member assembly house. The result is a major embarrassment to Congress which managed to secure only 9 while its ally Nationalist Congress Party got none. As per the final tally, BJP won 21 seats, MGP 3, Congress 9, Goa Vikas Party 2 and Independents 5. BJP-MGP alliance and 2 Independents taking the tally to 26 in all will stake claim to form government Wednesday. The

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex fell 1.09 percent on Tuesday to its lowest close in more than five weeks as setbacks to the Congress party in state elections raised concerns over the ability of the coalition government at the Centre to revive a stalled reforms drive. In a day of choppy trade that saw it rise 1.9 percent at one point and then falling as much as 1.4 percent, the 30-share benchmark index ended 189.58 points lower at 17,173.29 -- its lowest close since January 30 -- with 21 of its components closing in the red The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 1.10 percent or 57.9 points lower at 5,222.40 points on Tuesday. Energy conglomerate Reliance Industries led the days fall, that was compounded by global outlook and rising crude oil prices, even though Indias top carmaker Maruti Suzuki bucked the trend and rose 1.3 percent. Poll tallies that showed the Congress trailing in three of the five election states, and faring particularly badly in politically critical state Uttar Pradesh, were largely seen as a negative with analysts saying that the results could hamper economic reforms and the markets. "We think the results will not provide the political space for the government or the confidence to carry through unpopular reforms. We think the best that can be hoped for is muddle-through policies by the government," investment banker Goldman Sachs said in a report.

Singh, in an unprecedented move, had taken the government to Supreme Court after his statutory complaint before defence minister A K Antony with his demand was rejected. Geneva: Tata Motors,India's largest automobile company, on Tuesday presented Tata Megapixel, a new four-seater city-smart global range extended electric vehicle (REEV) concept, at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show. Combining a lithium ion phosphate battery and an on-board petrol engine generator for recharging on the move, the Tata Megapixel offers a range of up to 900 km (with a single tank of fuel), path-breaking CO2 emission of just 22 gm / km and fuel economy of 100 km / litre (under battery only power). Speaking on the occasion, Prakash M.

He claimed that his year of birth is 1951 and not 1950 as recorded by the Ministry of Defence, saying that the error cropped up due to a clerk who had listed his age as 16 instead of 15 in the Union Public Services (UPSC) examination form for National Defence Academy.

Foreign Affairs Minister of China Yang Jiechi calls on the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on March 01, 2012.

New Delhi: India and China have agreed to establish and institutionalize a maritime dialogue between the two countries. This was agreed upon at the meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi here on Thursday. Both India and China are maritime nations with long coastlines

and active navies. "The dialogue will aim at promoting cooperation and coordination between the two countries. It is expected to be led by the Ministry of External Affairs on the Indian side and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Chinese side," said a foreign ministry spokesperson. "The details are to be worked out," he said.

"Both India and China are major maritime nations, we have long coastlines, we have active navies. So, both of us felt that it would be useful to have a dialogue on maritime issues," the spokespersons said. The two Ministers discussed for a brief while the boundary question between India and China. But the spokesperson said Arunchal Pradesh issuewhich was freshly raised by China with its shocking objection of the visit of Defence Minister AK Antony to the region- was not discussed. "A very short and sweet answer, no," the spokesperson told reporters when asked on Arunachal issue. The discussions between the two ministers were part of the mechanism of annual meetings of Foreign Ministers and they spanned the entire spectrum of issues in India-China relations. In addition, there was also a detailed exchange of views on the forthcoming BRICS Summit both relating to the substantive outcome of the summit and the logistical arrangements for the summit.

Islamabad: A group of independent United Nations human rights experts on Friday urged the Government of Pakistan to take decisive measures to end sectarian violence and protect religious minorities after a second incident of targeted killings in two weeks. At least 18 Shia Muslims were killed on Tuesday after they were ordered off a bus in the northern district of Kohistan, the three experts said in a joint press release. These killings are extremely shocking and constitute acts that require the strongest response, said Rita Izsk, the Independent Expert on minority issues. They have sadly become a recurrent practice in Pakistan, and we urge the Pakistan Government to identify and prosecute the perpetrators and do everything possible to establish strengthened security measures. The experts expressed their condolences to the families of those killed and to all the people of Pakistan who suffer from such acts of terror. These targeted killings once more display the appalling degree of religious hatred in a country where there seems to be a failure to protect the security of religious minorities, said Heiner Bielefeldt, the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief. Christof Heyns, the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, stressed that the Government has an obligation to take all necessary measures to protect the right to life. Failure to take appropriate steps to prevent,

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against former Indian cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin in connection to a cheque bounce case. The warrant was issued by Delhi Police after the cricketer-turnedCongress MP (Member of Parliament) failed to appear before a court in person. Metropolitan Magistrate Vikrant Vaid had issued the warrant against Azharuddin even as the cricketers

investigate and punish for such acts is a violation of Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, he said. The three welcomed the condemnation expressed by Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Such serious incidents demand, and communities have the right to expect, the most rigorous response possible from the Government, they said. They urged the Government to step up security in the face of the clear and present threat faced by certain groups on the basis of their religion. In a previous incident on Feb 17 more than 30 people were killed or wounded when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive close to a mosque in a mainly Shia neighbourhood in the Kurram tribal region.

India denies U.S. special forces presenceNew Delhi: The Indian government on Friday denied that American special forces were stationed within the country, as part of counterterrorism co-operation operations, as claimed by a top Pentagon commander. The U.S. and India are working together to counter Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attack that killed 166 people including six Americans, U.S. Pacific Commander Admiral Robert Willard told a Congressional hearing Thursday. "We have currently special forces assist teams - Pacific assist teams is the term - laid down in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives as well as India," Willard said. We are working very closely with India with regard to their counter-terrorism capabilities and in particular on the maritime domain, he said. But also government to government, not necessarily department of defence but other agencies assisting them in terms of their internal counter-terror and counterinsurgency challenges, Willard added. The Indian government however challenged the statement with the defence ministry saying that claim that U.S. special teams were based in India was "factually incorrect". "The report is factually incorrect in so far as the reference to India is concerned. U.S. special forces teams have never been stationed in India in the past, nor are such teams stationed in the country presently," a defence ministry spokesperson said in New Delhi. The U.S. embassy in Delhi also clarified that the troops were not stationed in India, adding that a unit from the US 25th infantry division was in India to hold an exercise with Indian forces.

Congress has its comeuppanceIndias assembly election results declared this week have stunned the countrys oldest political behemoth into stupefaction. Its reaction after having been literally decimated in politically the most important and populous state in the country, Uttar Pradesh, is testimony to shock it finds itself in: it has said the results will make little difference to the party and its so called stalwarts Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and blue eyed boy and would be future prime minister Rahul Gandhi. Clearly, the partys leaders are in a state of denial for it has rarely ever faced such a terrible result in state level elections in its history. Its senior functionaries are falling over each other to take the blame upon themselves in the familiar act of self-flagellation after defeats both Digvijay Singh and Rahul Gandhi have held themselves accountable for the dismal results. But the results resoundingly prove the vibrancy of the democracy in the worlds largest democratic nation. The people have spoken loud and clear against the Congress roughshod political style that had it presiding over corruption scandals of epic proportions in the past few years. This is not to speak of the endless chain of such scandals that were since the countrys independence since 1947 that previous leaders deftly buried using a mixture of charisma, political machination and brute force against democratic institutions including suspending them as in the nightmarish emergency of 1975. Humiliating as this defeat might be, the Congress will pull every trick in its wily book, deploy its cunning negotiators and dip into its considerable financial reserves to do everything it can not to face a similar fate in the national elections due in 2014. It is adept in employing the four ancient ways of administering saam, daam, dand and bhed to achieve its ends even though it finds itself greatly weakened in terms of authority and credibility to do so. However, it can draw some hope from the fact that the Indian electorate is known to have voted differently in state and national elections even when they were held close together. It could possibly wait out the two odd years until the big poll and try to mollify the people a thing which is increasingly difficult in this day of social networking and instant messaging, which social scientists will undoubtedly find went against it in the just concluded elections. On the other hand it might decide to hold a snap election with an eye toward building political alliances with parties that have won the recent election provided they are able to convince them and provided the victorious parties are willing to risk aligning with the Congress after the near total public opprobrium against it. But one thing is clear: the voter has greatly wizened up and political parties can take them for granted only at their own risk. The average voter is not only well informed but has a dose of activism injected into them because of the greatly enlarged avenues for public discourse wrought on the nation by rapid strides in information and communication technologies. A fall out of the string of corruption scandals that have rocked the nation has been that political parties dissociated themselves with known criminals, who were made candidates with impunity because of their hold over people in states like Uttar Pradesh in the past. This time round, political parties shunned them and have been proven right in this decision. Dozens of known criminals who were denied established party tickets bit the dust standing on their own independent party tickets, proving people are no longer afraid of their violent clout. Whichever way one may look at it, the assembly election results declared this week go to prove that people are tired with Indias old style politics of power, muscle, pelf and brazen corrupt practice and are willing to dethrone seemingly Teflon coated dynasties that thought they were installed in power for life.- Dev Nadkarni

Faster broadband for more New Zealand schools PMJohn Key, PRIME MINIStERNationals four main priorities for building a brighter future over our second term in Government. Our four priorities are: to responsibly manage the governments finances; to build a more competitive and productive economy; to deliver better public services and to rebuild Christchurch. One of our plans to build a more competitive and productive economy is important if New Zealand businesses are going to compete on the world stage, and our economy is going to grow stronger and more resilient against any future economic shocks. A critical component of this plan is our commitment to rolling out ultra-fast broadband. Were investing $1.5 billion to deliver broadband to New Zealanders at home, where they work, and in our schools and hospitals. We recently announced the next part of our plan to rollout broadband in schools. By July next year, another 693 schools, from across New Zealand, will be connected to ultra-fast broadband. This is significant as it will mean ultra-fast broadband will be available for over 410,000 school students. This latest announcement brings the total number of schools to receive broadband by July next year to 1342. Having connections of such high speeds in our schools will mean young people can share resources, such as specialist teachers, with other schools through technology like high-definition video conferencing. Were aiming to make our schools the most wired in the world, because we know this will help deliver a better education system for your children. This is also a core part of our plan to build better public services that you can rely on. We are on track of achieving our objective to reach all urban schools and 99.9 per cent of school students by 2015. The 60 remaining remote schools will also be connected by wireless or satellite by 2015, and no school will miss out. Nationals ambitious plan to roll out ultra-fast broadband, once completed, will make New Zealand more connected, and more accessible than ever before. Were firmly committed to doing all we can to help make our economy more productive and internationally competitive. Faster internet speeds will help unlock our potential and help us build a stronger economy, which will benefit all New Zealanders. According to Nationals Manurewa based Member of Parliament Cam Calder, Faster internet will help connect our schools with the world and prepare students for living and working in the 21st century. The benefit to students in the Manurewa electorate is enormous, with ultra-fast broadband rolling out to the following schools in our community: Alfriston College, Clayton Park School, Clendon Park School, Finlayson Park School, Greenmeadows Intermediate, Hillpark School, Homai School, Leabank School, Manukau Christian School, Manurewa East School, Manurewa Intermediate, Manurewa South School, Manuerwa West School, Roscommon School, Rowandale School, South Auckland S D A School, St Annes School, Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa, Te Wharekura o Manurewa, TKKM o Manurewa, Weymouth Intermediate and Weymouth School. By the end of 2015, 97.7 per cent of schools and 99.9 per cent of students will receive ultrafast fibre enabling speeds of 100 Mbps.

How to leverage the recession to print successdency to put off non essential expenditure by people in the main tourist source markets has caused some decline in inbound tourist numbers and onshore expenditure. It is therefore refreshing to see a private enterprise, in the relatively remote Pacific islands region too, building its business growth strategy leveraging on the recession. John Woods, owner, publisher and editor of the Rarotonga based Cook Islands News saw an opportunity in expanding his business precisely because of the recession. If it werent for the global recession, he would never have been able to expand his media enterprise with a fairly substantial investment in new machinery and equipment in one of the South Pacifics most popular holiday destinations. Like all industries ancillary to manufacturing, the printing industry also felt the ravages of the global financial crisis. As manufacturers round the world pulled back on production levels, the demand for print products and services including promotional and packaging material dropped. This was bad news for overleveraged suppliers in the print and of their geographical distances. Rarotongas businesses have to send out a considerable amount of their print and packaging requirement to facilities in New Zealand adding considerably to costs. Highly capital intensive printing facilities were too expensive to invest in Publisher John Woods with a copy of the Cook Islands News because of the small packaging industry. He also runs a digital printing set up for smaller runs and banner printing for signage and advertising, adding another set of services for the islands small display, advertising and signage industry. As well as running a live wire newsroom for the Cook Islands News with the latest buzz from the island, the region and the world, Woods has refurbished the papers website and is looking at a re-launch with several e-commerce options in the next couple of months. Business plans for this foray into digital media are based on the fact that more than 100,000 Cook Islanders live and work overseas mainly in New Zealand, Australia and the United States besides other countries. The biggest offshore population being in New Zealand, an Auckland print edition of the Cook Islands News is on the cards, too, Woods says.

At a time when businesses are falling over like nine pins because of the drying up of credit and the collapse of economies, one businessman has turned the recession to his advantage by investing to meet a niche need in his countryIn the years since the global financial crisis unfolded and easy, cheap credit suddenly vanished stories of new private sector investment have been few and far between. Businesses have been in survival mode for the most part refraining from making new investments, waiting for the first signs of the hitherto elusive turnaround. Economies of the Oceania region have not been as badly affected as those in Europe partly because the Asia Pacific region has been largely insulated from the Wests financial troubles thanks to the momentum of their robust economic activity over the past few years.
