NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( Part 1 ) which is identical with IS0 4016 : 1988 Hexagon head bolts -Product grade C issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( IS0 ) wasadcpted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bolts, Nuts andFastener Accessories Sectional Committee ( LM 14 ) and approval of the Light MechanicalEngineering Division Council.
The standard was originally published in 1960 and revised in 1967. Subsequent to thepublication of 1967 edition, many changes had been egreed upon at international level whichhave been reflected in IS 1367 series of standards coveringthreaded steel fasteners.
Technical supply conditions forAccordingly, the standard was published in 3 parts covering hexagon
head bolts, hexagon head screws and hexagon nuts.
The second revision of the standard was based on IS0 4016 : 1979 Hexagon head bolts ofProduct grade C issued by ISO. This third revision has been made by the adoption of latestversion of IS0 4016 published in 1988 as Part 1. The remaining parts of the standard, that is,Parts 2 and 3 have also been revised by adoption of corresponding latest version of internationalstandards ( ISOs). The foHowing major changes have been made in this revision:
a) The range of sizes has been enlarged to cover sizes from M5 to M64;
b) The range of nominal lengths has been extended up to 500 mm;
c) Non-preferred sizes have been included in separate table in line with IS0 4016;
d) The use of property class 3.6 is also permitted subject to the agreement between themanufacturer anq user.
ln the 1967 version of this standard, the width across flats for Ml 0 and Ml 2 size fasteners wasspecified as 17 mm and 19 mm respectively. However,% the 1983 version this width acrossflats was brought in line with IS0 4016 : 1979 and specified as 16 mm and 18 mm respectivelyfor Ml0 and Ml2 size fasteners. Recognizing the fact that the new width across flat dimensionscould not be implemented immediately, the Explanatory Note to 1983 version of the standardmade a reference to this aspect. However, in the absence of specific coverage in the standard,the new width across flat dimensions could not be implemented.immediate changeover to new width across flats, the
Recognizing the difficulty ofCommittee felt that definite time frame
may be given to the manufacturers for changeover and accordingly, it has been decided thatwidth across flats as per 1967 version, that is, 17 mm and 19 mm for Ml0 and Ml2 size fastenersshall be permitted till 31 December 1994.
It is also understood that some manufacturers are already equipped and manufacturing as pernew width across flat dimensions and supplies as per new specifications are encouraged.During this period, the manufacture of fasteners as per old version shall be phased out and by1 January 1995, it is expected that the entire fastener industry would have switched over tonew width across flat dimensions and no old width across flats shall be permitted.
In the adopted standard, certain terminology and conventions are not identical with thoseused in Indian Standards; attention is specially drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words International Standard appear, referring to this standard, theyshould be read as Indian Standard; and
b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the currentpractice is to use point ( . ) as the decimal marker.

0 Introduction
This nternational Standard is part of the complete IS0 product standard series on hexagon drive fasteners. The series comprises:a) hexagon head bolts (IS0 4614, IS0 4615, IS0 4016 and IS0 8765);
b) hexagon head screws (IS0 4017, IS0 4018 and IS0 8676);
c) hexagon nuts (IS0 4032, IS0 4633, IS0 4034, IS0 4635, IS0 4636, IS0 8673, IS0 8674 and IS0 8675);
d) hexagon flanged bolts (IS0 4162 and IS0 8102);
e) hexagon flanged screws; )
f) hexagon flanged nuts (IS0 4161, IS0 7CI43 and IS0 7644);
g) structural bolting (IS0 4775, IS0 7411 to IS0 7414 and IS0 7417).
1 Scope and field of application
This International Standard gives specifications for hexagon head bolts with threads from M5 ~p to and including M64 of productgrade C.
If, in special cases, specifications other than those listed in this International Standard are required, they should be selected fromexisting International Standards, for example IS0 261, IS0 888, IS0 898-l. IS0 365-2 and IS0 4759-l.
1) These will form the subject of future International Standards.
