    HISTORY

    The first discovery of rock art was done in 1867 by Archibald Carlleyl

    sandstone hills of the Vindhyas, Mirzapur District

    There are three broad periods in the history of rock art research in In

    1) 1867 to 1931, would be that of enthusiasts and explorers.

    2) 1952 to 1972, more attention was paid to faithful recording &

    3) 1992: 2013-14which still prevails, the study of rock art has become asubject of research.

    Why to preserve ?

    SIGNIFICANCE

    Bhimbetka is a UNESCO rated world heritage site of India. They werethe World Heritage List of UNESCO in 2003

    The rock paintings here track the gradual progress and various adaptprehistoric man was making in his lifestyle

    They also display a richness and variety ofmural subjects and one ofknown concentrations of rock art

    INTERPRETATION

    The superimposition of paintings shows that the same canvas was udifferent people at different times. The drawings and paintings can bunder 7 different periods. They are as follows:

    Upper Palaeolithic Period I

    Mesolithic Period II

    Chalcolithic Period III

    Early Historic Period IV & V

    Medieval Period VI & VII

    REASONS FOR DETERIORATION

    There are several reasons for a site to deteriorate. But some of them are affectingof India today. They are as follows:

    1) Human/ Animal 2) Biological factors 3) Climatic

    PRESENT CONDITION OF BHIMBETKA

    Madhya Pradesh tourism is not concerned so much about this spot

    Only 4-5 visitors per day

    Entrance fee is rupees 10 per head

    One cave has been turned into a temple!

    The guide charges 100 rupees for the tour

    of which only 15 caves are open to public

    NO hotels, NO restaurants, NO signage, NO security, NO electricity facilities
