As a holiday destination the Indian Ocean is without

doubt one of the few remaining areas in the world that

is still relatively uncommercialised and largely unaffected by

mass tourism.

Our cruises range in duration from 3 to 18 nights, with itineraries whichinclude the breathtakingly beautiful coral reef-encircled Seychellesislands; the fascinating Mascarene islands of Mauritius, with its ever-changing scenery, and the French influenced island of La Réunion;picturesque Madagascar; the ‘perfumed islands’ of The Comoros and thebustling bazaars of Zanzibar. Each island has a distinct and uniquecharacter of its own.

South Africa reveals anabundance of amazingscenery and diversecultures. Our ‘Voyage tothe Cape’ visits the excitingports of Durban, EastLondon, Port Elizabeth,Mossel Bay andcosmopolitan Cape Town.

What makes us unique is that we offer cruises of varying durationswhich can be combined with a relaxing stay at an exotic Kenya beachhotel and optional safari adventures.

AFRICAN SAFARI CLUBFrom its small beginnings in 1967, the group now controls nine hotels inKenya and six safari lodges and camps, together with some transfer andsafari vehicles as well as a fleet of light aircraft to fly you to or from thewilderness game reserves from a private airstrip. The infrastructure alsoincludes African Safari Airways who operate an Airbus A310-308 aircraftbetween various European gateways and Mombasa several times a week, although most flights from the UK are with Monarch or another reputableairline.

We also offer holidays to Egypt which include a seven night Nile cruiseaboard the five star M.S. Da Vinci, exclusive to African Safari Club guests, with the option of extending your stay for an extra week from a choice ofhotels in Luxor – an amazing holiday experience.

In May 2008, M.S. Royal Star will be positioned in the Red Sea and onjust four departures will offer a seven night cruise visiting the ports ofSuez, Sharm-el-Sheikh, Aqaba and Safaga. Each port will show you bothancient and modern sights – leaving you with memories that will lastforever.

M.S. Royal Star

FULLY AIR-CONDITIONEDAND STABILISED, THEYACHT-LIKE M.S. ROYALSTAR IS A TRADITIONAL SHIPOF GREAT CHARACTER WITHTEAK DECKS AND A RICHINTERIOR OF POLISHEDWOOD AND GLEAMINGBRASS.

YACHT-LIKE CRUISINGM.S. Royal Star is ideal for visiting the islands ofthe Indian Ocean, as she is able to cruise closeto shore and visit intriguing ports ofteninaccessible to larger ships. More importantly, with so few passengers there is no danger ofoverwhelming the character and often delicateecosystem of the islands we visit, thuspreserving what one has travelled to experience.

At 5,600 tons she is large enough to

accommodate all the facilities you

would expect to find on a quality liner

and with a maximum of just 200

passengers, many of whom hail from

European countries as well as other

English speaking areas, offers a friendly

and intimate environment, creating a

true sense of camaraderie.

I had a simply marvellous time on boardThe Royal Star. Everyone was so friendlyand welcoming, particularly as I am a

relatively aged singleton. The atmosphere on boardthroughout the trip was just the right mix ofelegance and luxury with a suitable dash ofinformality and fun.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

The Filipino and Indonesian stewardsare often praised for their friendly and obligingmanner and the European cruise team willensure that all your needs are catered for. Wealso have a doctor on board for your peace ofmind.

RELAXING ON BOARDTo help you plan your day, a ‘Daily Programme’is delivered to your cabin the evening prior andcontains information on the following days shoreexcursions, activities on board andentertainment. You will find sun beds forrelaxation, a small pool in which to cool off(towels provided) and a sauna. Not to be missedare the interesting slide shows and informal talksabout your forthcoming ports of call. Try not tomiss these as they will help you decide whichexcursions are best suited to you. You might liketo make up a foursome for a rubber of bridge inthe cosy card room. The daily activity programmewhilst at sea includes shuffleboard, bingo anddarts, and for the energetic you can ‘walk a mile’on deck at sunset.

We thought our previous cruise with youwas wonderful, but our Mysteries of the

Mascarenes cruise in April 2007 was even better!!To have eleven nights on board our favourite shipbeing given the happiest holiday with everypassenger wanting to stay on board was tribute tothe incredible crew. We look forward toreturning again.

Page 6: indian ocean

GOING ASHOREParadise awaits at each port of call and ourchoice of optional excursions will show you thebest of these wonderful exotic places. A briefdescription of the ports of call and excursionscan be found on pages 22 – 31.

M.S. Royal Star docks alongside at the ports ofMombasa, Mahé and normally Mauritius,La Réunion, Maputo and at all ports in SouthAfrica, but owing to a lack of suitable facilitiesat the other ports she will anchor off andpassengers will be taken ashore by launch ortender. No charge is made for this service.

Please note that occasionally, wet landingsmay be necessary. M.S. Royal Star will anchoroff either at La Digue or Praslin dependent onthe trade winds. A ferry service operatesbetween the two islands.

At embarkation you will receive a boardingpass which will replace your passport duringthe cruise. At each port of call, a Landing TagsBoard is placed at the exit to the gangway. It isimperative that you take your boarding passand the tag corresponding to your cabinnumber with you when going ashore. Onembarking the ship, the landing tag must bereplaced which allows the crew to account forall passengers prior to sailing.

WELCOME TO KENYA & THE INDIAN OCEAN

WHAT TO EXPECTWhen holidaying in Kenya and visiting some of theislands in the Indian Ocean, it is important to rememberthat you cannot expect the same standards that we areaccustomed to in Europe. There is little or no drainage,as a consequence, after a shower of rain the paths androads can become muddy. Some vehicles are somewhatdilapidated and driving can be erratic. Energyconservation measures may mean that on occasionshotels are obliged to limit services such as water andelectricity supplies which will result in power cuts, lossof air-conditioning and water shortages. To maintain atrue Kenyan ambiance, some pathways in the hotels andlodges are only dimly lit. Don’t forget to take a torchwith you. Whilst electrical wiring always complies withlocal safety standards, these may be lower than we areaccustomed to in Europe.

The presence of insects in a hotel or lodge should notbe interpreted as a lack of cleanliness or hygiene. It issimply a fact of life in the tropics.

You are likely to see monkeys and cats in and aroundthe hotel grounds. Monkeys are wild animals and arebest admired from a distance for their cheeky behaviourbut they should not be encouraged into eating areas orhotel rooms and you should not attempt to feed them,as this can discourage them from relying on their naturaldiet. Cats are generally kept in the grounds of the hotel. For general hygiene purposes and the comfort of allguests, they should not be encouraged into eating areas. They are well cared for and fed by the staff and shouldnot be fed by the guests in common areas.

Mombasa is generally safe but we recommend that youdo not go walking around the city at night and that youuse only licensed taxis.

Please ensure that any excursions you buy are boughtfrom a recognised and licensed operator who hasadequate insurance cover. We also advise you not to buyfood from beach or street vendors.

For your safety be more vigilant than you would athome.

Useful Information

Page 43: indian ocean

43

YOUR HEALTHIn common with many tropical countries, generalstandards of hygiene and safety in Kenya and at theports of call on your cruise may differ from those inEurope. You should, therefore, exercise greater cautionfor your own protection and health. The risk of insectbites may be reduced by the use of repellent sprays andby covering up whenever possible, especially in woodedareas and at night. To minimise the risk of stomachupset, you should avoid too much fruit, drinks with iceand excess sunbathing. When eating out, ensure to eatonly in reputable establishments which conform toInternational health and hygiene standards.

Remember to take adequate supplies of anyprescribed medication.

WATERTap water should not be used as drinking water or forcleaning teeth. Bottled water can be bought from theshops, bars and restaurants of the hotels and from thebars and restaurant on board M.S. Royal Star. Boiledwater (which may be described locally as drinking water)for cleaning your teeth is provided in your room. However, we recommend that this is not swallowed.Whilst Mombasa and its surrounding area is supplied bya pipeline originating from springs up-country, most ofthe Kenyan coast is supplied with borehole-water which, depending upon location, may be salty. Occasionallythere are failures of the water supply due to power cutsand repairs to pipelines and at the pumping station. Insuch instances there may be restrictions on water use.African Safari Club will always endeavour to ensure anefficient water supply but regrettably, the salt contentand any failures are generally beyond our control. Inany event, please try to conserve water, as Kenyanresources are much more limited than in Europe.

Bottled water is available on board M.S. Royal Star andduring meals for a nominal charge.

CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEMSoon after arrival in resort you will receive your AfricanSafari Club Membership Card. This acts as a credit cardfor purchases from the bars and shops at your hotel, provided your stay is more than one night. It can also beused when booking excursions or safaris. Prices in allAfrican Safari Club hotels are shown in Euros. Paymentof your hotel account can be made by means of cash, travellers cheques, Visa or Mastercard.

TOURIST OFFICERAt your African Safari Club hotel, the resident TouristOfficer is available to give you advice and information.Soon after arrival, he/she will hold a Welcome Meeting, giving you information about the hotel facilities, attractions and the local excursion programme. Pleaseattend this meeting as you will find the informationinvaluable, especially if you are a first-time visitor.

BEACHESCertain African Safari Club hotels have a private beachwhich is kept clean and, as far as possible, protectedfrom the illegal beach traders who operate everywherealong the coast. Beach vendors may offer safaris as wellas souvenirs and African Safari Club cannot acceptresponsibility for any dealings you have with them.

Due to the changing winds and tides, seaweed issometimes washed up on to the beaches and, althoughthey are cleaned daily, you may find that watersports arerestricted on these occasions.

EXTRA BED IN YOUR ROOMIf more than two people share a room, an extra bed maybe added and space will therefore be limited. Please notethat in some cases the extra bed could be a sofabed orZ-bed.

SAFARISSafaris often involve travel of long distances over roughground and may not be suitable for those with certainmedical conditions. If in doubt please contact us foradvice. Vehicles are also likely to be of a lower standardthan those in the UK.

Whilst on safari, for your own safety, please observe theinstructions of your driver/guide at all times.

Under no circumstances should you wander awayfrom designated picnic areas, your safari vehicle orlodge/camp.Please note that electricity and water supplies at safarilodges/camps can often be interrupted and occasionallycut completely at night.

Your safari group may include customers from otherEuropean countries.

EXCURSIONSSome excursions involve walking over rough terrain, climbing in and out of high vehicles or arriving by speedboat or motorised dhow. Some excursions also operatein choppy sea conditions. You should speak to theTourist Office on board or in your hotel prior to bookingyour excursions if you have any concerns, or if you haveany medical condition that may prevent you fromparticipating. Take special care when embarking anddisembarking tenders for shore excursions.

CONSERVATION CODETourism plays an integral part in maintaining andsustaining indigenous cultures and provides aninvaluable source of revenue. However, if we are topreserve the natural beauty and wildlife of this uniquepart of the world, all visitors must observe theconservation code. Our General Information Bookletprovides a comprehensive guide to environmentalconservation.
