Introduction:

India is a country of the south of Asia, with comprises many religions, customs and so India has got many different styles and instruments of Music.

I. Style and type of Indian Music

India has different musical styles. The styles of the North

of India aren’t the same as in the South.

South :

-The Kalpita Sangîta, song composed by elders.

-The Manôdharma Sangîta, song improvised according to diverse techniques.

-The Padam, old song, danced by women.

North :

-The Dhrupad, older Indian classic musical form.

-The Khyal or Khayal is a little lighter.

-The Dhamâr is more rhythmical.

-The Tarânâ or Tillanâ is a kind of spiritual song.

-The Thumri is a song subg by women. It’s always a love poem.

.There are many other musical forms as : Bharavi, Chaiti, Chaturang, Dadra, Dhun, Ghato, Holi, Kâfi, Kathagayan, Kajri, Khamsa, Lavni, Ragmala, Ramayan, Sadra, Sargam, Sûrtirwat…

III. Indian Groups and singers Ravi Shankar :

He was born in 1920 in Vârânasî. He is a sitar player and composer. He played for the first time in the United States of America in 1956. He was 36 years old (He’s Norah Jones’s father).

In 1966, George Harrison from The Beatles began as his pupil and played the sitar in the song Norwegian Wood. Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones used the sitar too in 1969 during the Woodstock festival

Allauddin Khan :

He was born in 1862 and he died in 1972. He was a famous Indian composer. He was able to play a lot of different instruments (Sarod, Violon, Sitar, Surbahar…).He was the teacher of Ravi Shankar. He was the first Indian musician to play music in foreign countries.

Lata Mangeshkar :

She was born in1929. She is a specialist of movies musics. When she was very young, her father died, so she had to sing in the street to make money. She became famous in 1940 singing Naushad’s movies musics.

Her sister, Asha Bhosle and her brother, Hridayanath Mangeshkar, are also famous Indian musicians.

L. Subramaniam :

He was born in 1947. He is a famous composer, singer and violon player. He gave his first concert when he was 6 years old. He plays percussion instruments and the violon.

Girija Devi :

She is an Indian singer. She was born in 1929. She sings the Khyal which is a traditional Indian song. She sang for the first time in a concert when she was 20 years old. She has made a lot of international tours. She has

received awards for her compositions.

Conclusion

With all its styles, instruments and singers, Indian music and culture have become famous little by little all over

the world. Indian music is sometimes used by a lot of international bands.
