Prime Minister John Key: 68th Independence Day of India Greetings, Let me take this opportunity to extend my best wishes on the 68th Independence Day of India. I am sorry that I cannot attend. Independence Day marks a very important event in India’s history. The celebrations are an opportunity for Indian people around New Zealand, and the world, to reflect on the past and look toward the future. India has emerged in recent decades as a real success story. Through trade, innovation, and growth India has developed into a major regional economic hub. As Prime Minister I strongly value New Zealand’s relationship with India. Our relationship with India does not end at the border. New Zealand is home to many vibrant and diverse communities, including a thriving community of Indian New Zealanders. These celebrations provide an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contribution that Indian New Zealanders make to our nation. National is committed to creating an environment and economy that supports members of all our communities to fully participate in all aspects of New Zealand life. Congratulations to all those who involved with marking this year’s anniversary, in particular the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust for their work supporting South Asian communities in New Zealand. All the best for this year’s Independence celebrations, I hope you enjoy them. Best wishes,

Rt Hon John Key PRIME MINISTER

Kia ora

It is my honour to wish you and your families a happy India Independence Day this year as we commemorate the 68th anniversary of India’s free statehood. Today is a moment of celebration and a day to pay tribute to those who struggled and sacrificed in the bid for freedom.

Auckland is the most ethnically diverse region in New Zealand – with more than 190 different ethnic groups. Our diversity is one of Auckland’s great strengths, helping us be globally connected and giving us greater understanding of our friends and neighbours’ home cultures.

In particular, our Indian communities have a long and proud history in Auckland, and make a significant contribution to our economic, social and cultural life.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the charitable efforts of Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust – the largest multi-faith organization in Auckland - in helping and supporting the South Asian communities by means of various community development activities and programmes.

Our Ethnic People’s Advisory Panel members are closely connected with our Indian Aucklanders as they work hard to inform the council on issues facing the Indian community and are working to build stronger economic and cultural links with India.

Indian events, such as Independence Day, Diwali and India’s National Day, are all celebrated and supported by Auckland. Diwali in particular has been embraced by the wider Auckland community as one of the cultural highlights in the Auckland events calendar.

I wish you all the best in celebrating India Independence Day.

Enjoy!

Nga mihi

We are proud to commemorate another anniversary of India’s Independence Day celebrated in New Zealand. A celebration that started in small scale a few years ago has now become a grand festival graced by not just the Indian diaspora in Auckland but also many friends of the Indian community. Indians are the second largest ethnic group in New Zealand currently and these celebrations have become an event to look forward to in Auckland’s ethnic calendar of events.

Today, we get together to not only to celebrate the freedom of our great democracy obtained through the sacrifices of our countrymen and women. We are here to celebrate the contribution our diaspora which continue to make to our adopted country.

India’s independence was not achieved lightly but after an independence movement that stretched over many decades. A large number of people were killed and many activists spent time in jail. On the 15th of August 1947, the Prime Minister Sri Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian flag above the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. Every subsequent Independence day, the current Prime Minister raises the Indian flag in a symbolic gesture as we repeat it today in Aotea Square in Auckland.

Today’s celebrations are hosted by a collective of community organisations who serve the community in Auckland. Bhartiya Samaj, The South Trust, Radio Humm FM, Auckland Indian Association, NZ Indian Central Association, Manukau Indian Association, Waitakere Indian Association and with many organisations collaborated to bring this grand celebrations to you.

As the representative of Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust and its founding Chairperson, I would like to

share with you some of the successes we have had over the last year our dream for several years was to establish a culturally appropriate rest home for our elders and this dream was realised last year. I am proud to let you know that this project, Aashirwaad Rest home which is part of the Bupa Care Services at the David Lange Care Home in Mangere, has successfully completed one year of service to the community recently.

We also have continued to serve our community by hosting targeted health workshops such as diabetes awareness and healthy eating; legal awareness programmes; support programmes for new migrants and youth and promoting our community to engage in cultural activities.

This year in March we launched an Ethnic Playgroup for the children under 5 years which has been received very well by the community.

On behalf of Bhartiya Samaj, I would like to thank the Auckland Live for providing us this magnificent facility yet again, a fitting venue to host these celebrations. I would also like to acknowledge the participation of all the individuals and groups who took part in the cultural performances today. We also would like to thank all partner organisations, all media who continue to support our journey, our loyal advertisers and sponsors and our wonderful volunteers whose support made this event a success.

Finally, on behalf of the organising team I would like to thank everyone who participated and hope that you continue to support us in our journey.

New Zealand First congratulates the wider Indian community in New Zealand as it celebrates India’s 68th Independence Day.

On this occasion I would like to acknowledge the valuable work that the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust does with its support for the South Asian communities through a variety of activities and programmes.

The work of all community groups in New Zealand is often unrecognised, despite the essential and important role they play in keeping our communities strong.

I am sure many people appreciate the effort put into organising these activities and they are grateful for the chance to participate. I wish the Trust well with all its future endeavours

Jai HindRt Hon Winston PetersLeader, New Zealand First

Today Indian communities across the country and around the world will be celebrating India Independence Day. This is a significant day – a time of great celebration. It is also an opportunity for New Zealand to recognise the many influential contributions made by Indian communities in our society.

I acknowledge the valuable work carried out by various organisations which are committed to supporting the many cultures and ethnicities that call New Zealand home. This is done by promoting unity while

embracing diversity. I would like to especially acknowledge the efforts of the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust for their ongoing efforts in the Indian community.

New Zealand is a place where Indian culture and heritage can be celebrated. Therefore, may this be a time for us to reflect on the longstanding relationship between New Zealand and India, and the many people who live here. On behalf of New Zealand First, I wish you a joyful India Independence Day.

Le’aufa’amulia Asenati Lole-TaylorNew Zealand First MP

Namaste

I would like to send my heartfelt congratulations to the New Zealand Indian community as it celebrates the 68th Indian Independence Day. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the work of the Bharitya Samaj Charitable Trust. With your

help, South Asian migrants find their place in New Zealand and make a full contribution to our country. I would also like to congratulate India on electing a new government which has widespread support from its people. My best wishes go to the Modi government and I look forward to working with them in the future.

David CunliffeLeader, NZ Labour Party

My fellow New Zealand Indians

Once again I am a guest of the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust to celebrate India’s Independence Day which falls on Aug 15.

It is pleasing to see that a large number of other major Indian organisations and associations from around Auckland have joined forces to celebrate this auspicious day.

India has undergone many changes since gaining independence in 1947. Let us hope and pray that it will continue to progress and find solutions to all its problems and continue on a path for prosperity for all its citizens, irrespective of their religion, caste, region or language.

India is important to New Zealand. There are more than 155,000 Indians living in the country and is the fastest growing Kiwi

ethnic group. India is our main supplier of skilled migrants and the number of international students from India has also increased steadily. It is also becoming an important trading partner and hopefully we will see the materialization of a free trade agreement, which will deliver a broad range of benefits for both countries.

I pray for the success of India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building India on the heritage of its rich social and cultural diversity, its tradition, the talent of its human resource and the aspirations of the youth and women.

This will be the last occasion on which I pen a message as a member of Parliament. I would like to thank you all for allowing me to represent you in Parliament. It was a great honour.

Vande Mataram. Jai Hind.

Indians around the world celebrate our Independence each year with lot of happiness.

As a New Zealander of Indian decent I am proud to represent my community, and all New Zealanders in Parliament.

New Zealand and India have a positive relationship, both in the past and present. We have much in common - we share language, commonwealth heritage, and of course, a love of cricket. Importantly, both countries continue to build on this as we seek economic, political and trade partnerships with

each other.I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust. The Trust’s core vision is to help and support people of South Asian origin - both those who are settled, and also who have newly migrated to New Zealand - through a varied of community development and awareness activities. This has contributed positively to the betterment of New Zealand and its diversity.

I once wish all of you a very happy 68th Indian Independence Day

Kanwaljit Singh BakshiNational Member of Parliament

It is with great pleasure and respect that I extend my wishes to fellow Indians on the occasion of India’s 68th Independence Day.

Today we pay tribute to those who struggled to achieve independence for India. We also celebrate our vibrant cultures, our commitment to democracy and our historical contributions to the fields of arts, science, mathematics,

medicine and philosophy. We can also be proud as Kiwi Indians as we continue to play a significant part in the rich social fabric of this nation.

I look forward to continuing to strengthen my ties with our Indian communities in Aotearoa and to working closely with all of you in my capacity as a Labour Party list candidate at this year’s General Election.

I am very mindful that this Independence Day has special significance for many Indians as the election of a new and popular government provides you with a renewed sense of hope and expectation that some of the more demanding development needs of India will be addressed. I share in that sense of optimism. Independence Day is one on which Indians rally around their common historical heritage, their struggles for Independence and its sense of optimism for the future. I acknowledge in particular the many Indian New Zealanders who make such an important contribution to New Zealand and also to India. As the Labour Party Spokesperson on Immigration I am aware of a number of the

outstanding issues we need to address. I want to ensure that we have an immigration system that is built on New Zealand’s need for skilled people and also on the importance of family life to the Indian community. Indian New Zealanders can be assured that I am keen to meet up with you in the new Parliament and advance these matters to our mutual satisfaction. On this special day I offer congratulations to all New Zealand Indians and their counterparts in India. I also acknowledge the splendid work of Bhartiya Samaj for this celebration and for all the other opportunities it provides for the Indian community in Auckland.

Jai Hind

Trevor MallardLabour MP,Spokesperson on Immigration

Indian Independence Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the significance of the diverse cultures, ancient history, modern progress and the influence of the world’s largest democracy.

NZ benefits from the economic and social contributions of Indian migrants - old and new. There is a large Indian population in the Maungakiekie electorate where I currently work as a Labour List MP and where I am a candidate in this year’s election.

I enjoy the opportunities I have to regularly engage with the Indian community - individually and in groups at events and places of worship.

I know that the struggle to achieve independence and democracy means the Indian community are active in engaging with the political system. I look forward to continuing to serve this community as a strong advocate and wish the Indian Community a happy 68th Indian Independence Day.

Kia ora, Namaste,

On behalf of the team at Humm 106.2FM , we take this opportunity to congratulate all Indians around the globe on this most joyous day, regardless of culture, tradition or belief.

Not many of us are politically motivated, yet when 15 August approaches, not one Indian soul forgets to salute the brave who fought for the freedom of their motherland. It was a team of dedicated sons and daughters of the nation, who had the vision, passion, determination and unconditional love for their country with one collective goal.

Almost seven decades on, India today has become a nation that many countries look up to: be it for being the biggest democracy of the world, technological advances, economic position, Indian literacy, Bollywood, its vibrant culture or authentic food.

Over a 100,000 Indians today proudly call New Zealand their home. Indians in New Zealand have served and contributed at every level, and we are proud of them. Some sailed over pre independence and others more recently.

Humm FM is honoured to be associated with Bhartiya Samaj who under the leadership of Mr Jeet Suchdev and founding member Ms. Roopa Suchdev who have been doing tremendous work for our community. Their tireless work in providing services to senior citizens, youth & children, running volunteer development programs, migrant support & settlement. One of the biggest achievements is seeing the beginning of the initiative to provide the South Asian Community with a culturally appropriate rest home.

We might be in New Zealand but must not ignore the unity that existed amongst the people who battled to win their India back; Humm FM is proud to be a media partner with Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust in commemorating the 68th India Independence day.

Let us once again on behalf of my Team Humm106.2FM wish you a very happy 68th India Independence Anniversary. Jai Hind!

Roshila & Satyan PrasadDirectors, Humm FM 106.2

Bupa congratulate the Indian community on the 68th India Independence Day on 15 August 2014. Bupa were delighted to join hands with Bhartiya Samaj, signing a Memorandum of Understanding in 2013. This memorandum is a commitment to work together and develop culturally appropriate care services for the South Asian community. The needs of the community were met by allocating a separate wing within Bupa’s David Lange Care Home and Hospital in Mangere East. The wing is named “Aashirwad” meaning blessings and is decorated in South Asian style. We thank Bhartiya Samaj for their ongoing support and commitment to the project and look forward to providing care to the South Asian community for many years to come.

Namaste, Kia Ora

It is my pleasure to convey the goodwill message of 68th Independence Day Of India. On this Historical Day we reflect on the progress of India and how significant and an influential role India is playing on the international stage.

Congratulations to all Indians and NZ Indian community for celebrating the world’s largest democracy. Late Sir Edmund Hillary and Late Rt. Hon. David Lange had a special bond with India and Indians living here in NZ. Since then many Ministers from both countries have been exchanging visits to India and NZ.

On this memorable occasion we remember our great leader Mahatma Gandhiji and his teaching of truth, peace and non-violence. We pay tribute to all freedom fighters and leaders for sacrifices they have made for our nation.

The large Indian community in NZ continue to make our mark in the fields of business, medicine, law, sports, politics and other fields. Festivals such as Diwali, Holi , Navratri are becoming more and more popular and celebrated by the wider community in NZ.

On behalf of Auckland Indian Association Inc. I Congratulate Bhartiya Samaj and all the other Associations , Community Organisations for coming together to celebrate the historical day of India on one platform and I hope we can continue to work united and cohesively to promote our culture and heritage in NZ. I urge everyone to lend their support and become more engaged in this country and its institutions – Schools, Community groups, businesses, politics and Government, and we must remain vigorous and dynamic for our future generation.

Ashokbhai B. DarjiPresidentAuckland Indian Association Inc

Through sustained and relentless efforts, both within and outside, today India is inching forward into a new era of development and human empowerment. Full credit goes to the millions who have demonstrated that world’s largest democracy believes in freedom even in most adverse situations and even when surrounded by failed states and being located in one of the most unstable geopolitical regions of the world. Peaceful coexistence is the hallmark for which the country has paid a heavy price in the past but no invader or occupier has ever been able to trample the soul of this nation.

It is my pleasure to congratulate and thank the team of Bhartiya Samaj for keeping this flame of Indian ethos alive here in New Zealand by celebrating the Indian Independence Day every year with a high fervour.

Indian experience has been an action path for many other nations and I see Indian Independence day as the world democracy day where in a ray of hope is generated for those who still are in chains.

Veer KharPresidentManukau Indian Association Inc

Kathiravan SivaprakasamSecretaryMuthtamil Sangam Inc.

India’s national anthem, “Nothing like our Hindustan (INDIA) in the world entire, she (motherland) is our garden, we her warbling choir. We may wander far from home, home resides in our thoughts.” – Muhammad Iqbal

India has been known for its growth as a great civilization cherished by the

history of five thousand years. Oldest richest heritage with wondrous assortment of language, religion and culture which is exclusive and unequalled.

India was anciently called as Bharatavarsha after Bharata, who was the emperor of India, son of King Dushyanta and Queen Sakuntala, who conquered all of greater India, united it. It has ravishing and harlequin green forests, a vivid variety of flora and fauna, and has many rivers flowing through its fertile lands.

The Himalayas adorn India like a majestic crown on the head of an equally magnificent beauty in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, Gujrat in the west to Ganga Sagar in the east covering an area of 32,87,590 square kilometres. Having a fusion of almost 2000 social and religious groups, 18 registered national and regional languages. Estimated population of 1.27 billion in 2014.

The history gives a glance into the generosity of its growth - from a Country distracted under manifest destiny, to one

of the leading economies in the global scenario within a span of fifty years. It gives the feeling of real pride among all the Indians living in the country and abroad. It is the patriotic passion among the people of the nation, which has cultivated this development. It is a vast subcontinent ranked as seventh largest which has been enliven by cross country contact and symbolized by unification in variance of caste, creed, culture, religion and language. India, continually known among the technologically leading countries in the world. Has gained fame in the fields of agriculture, Medicine and Space. The relations between foreign countries and India has promoted and encouraged trade in goods and services, investment, scientific, technical and economic cooperation.

The first national flag in India is said to have been hoisted on August 7, 1906, in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta now Kolkata. But, on the apocalyptic night of Aug 14, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag and annunciate, “When the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom”. That auspicious day finally the long desired independence was in the air and was felt in the hands of the independent nation.

It is a country where the Shabad Kirtan from Gurudwaras, and Azan from Mosques, the Bhajans from Temples and chiming of the bells from churches merge and mingle and produce a harmonious, melodious, spiritual tune, loved by all. Many renowned personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Swami Vivekananda, C.V. Raman, Kalpana Chawla belong from this soil. We are proud to be born on this holy soil and its feel of belonging strengthens our character. Poet Jay Shankar Prasad says, “If we have to live then only for the country, this pride should remain our happiness! We should devote completely everything, on our lovely Bharatavarsh”. – Jai Hind!!

Incredible India is not just a catchphrase marketed by the Government of India’s tourism department.

A land, where more English newspapers are published than the rest of the English speaking world combined, and where culture and family values are still cherished, over individualism.

In this issue, we region wise delve into places where people from all over the world can go and visit and see the real India.

NORTH EAST

North East consists of the Seven sisters. Seven states, which are our doorway to the rest of Asia. Assam is best known for its tea, and around 60% of India’s tea is produced here. Lots of temples and the famous Kaziranga National Park. This is the best place to organize tours throughout the rest of North East.

Arunachal Pradesh is a land of unfathomed beauty, but sadly travel for foreigners here is a bit restricted, due to its bordering China. Most of the border is under the direct control of the Indian army. However, the Indian Govt. relaxed permits in 2008. Home to the famous Tawang Monastery. Perched at 10,000 feet above sea level, it overlooks the Tawang Valley near the border of Bhutan. The monastery is the largest Buddhist monasteries in India. It also has a fascinating collection of thangkas (Tibetan paintings). If you can, visit it during the Torgya Festival. Tripura is the second smallest state of India, and is renowned for its bamboo products. The Ujjayanta palace in Agartala is a beautiful mix of European and Mughal architecture. Tripura also has a

number of Buddhist temples, giving it appeal as a Buddhist pilgrimage place.

Nagaland, which shares a border with Myanmar is comparatively new to tourism, the people are curious, warm, informal -- and open to attracting visitors. There are tourist lodges, with cultural programs, in almost every location in the state to accommodate you, including Hornbill Festival (first week of December), and Moatsu Festival (first week of May).

Manipur has been described as the Jewel of the East due to its picturesque hills and valleys. Manipur has recently begun taking steps to develop its tourist potential. A Lemon Festival is held every January in Kachai and the Kang Chingba Festival is also a huge event. Mizoram’s festivals provide a good dose of culture as well, with the Chapchar Kut being one of the most popular.

Meghalaya is known as the Abode of the Clouds, it’s one of the wettest places on earth. So, do choose the time when you visit wisely! Capital Shillong was a popular hill station during colonial times, with leftover features being a championship golf course and polo ground, Victorian bungalows, and churches.

EAST

Bihar is the birth place of Buddhism in India, including Bodhgaya and the Mahabodhi Temple. The Sonepur Fair is known for its elephants.

West Bengal is the cultural capital of India, with Victorian architecture, and nature perfectly blended. Kolkata is known as the Paris of India, known to give birth to most of the Nobel laureates, and the winners of Man-Booker and Pulitzer prizes, Academy awards, and countless literary and artistic giants, and if you’re intellectually inclined this is your place to visit! Must see places include the Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, Central Library, Zoological Gardens, Maidan, Dalhousie Square and the Howrah Bridge, and the nightclubs >

and Anglo-Indian live band pubs in Park street!

Sikkim has long been regarded as one of the last Himalayan Shangri-las. The most visited monasteries in Sikkim are Rumtek (overlooking Gangtok), Pemayangtse (near Pelling in West Sikkim), and Tashiding (also in West Sikkim). River rafting in Teesta River offers some world class fun. The major route is Makha-Sirwani-Bardang-Rongpo. Foreigners can go up to Tsomgo Lake, also called Changu Lake, 27 kilometers (17 miles) short of Nathu La on the Old Silk Route to Nathu La, three hours from Gangtok on the Chinese border. The border consists of a lone barbed wire fence, and you’ll get the strange thrill of seeing the Chinese soldiers on the other side.

Coming to Orissa, the intricately carved Sun Temple, dedicated to Hindu Sun God, Surya, was constructed in the 13th century. The entrance fee is $5 for foreigners. The capital city of Orissa, Bhubaneshwar is most famous for its temples (there are over 700, mostly devoted to Lord Shiva) including the largest temple in the state -- the Lingraj Mandir. Chilka Lake, Puri and Chandipur beaches on the Bay of Bengal being the other attractions.

SOUTH

For the cultural tourist who wants to experiences being in a Temple state, Tamil Nadu is the place to be. From the Meenakshi temple of Madurai, to those of Rameswaram, Chidambaram, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjore, this place is a fascinating ode to the Dravidian style of culture, art and architecture, that of the Pallava, the Chola and the Pandya dynasties.

Karnataka offers Buddhist stone edicts at Raichur and Chitradurga. It has also left its mark in the embellishment of older temples and the building of new ones. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan who ruled the erstwhile state of Mysore from Srirangapatnam also left their mark in the architecture of the state.

One of the most tranquil and relaxing things you can do in Kerala, otherwise known as “God’s own country” is take a trip in a houseboat along the palm-fringed Kerala canals, known as the backwaters. Delicious south Indian food and drinks will be pure bliss! Periyar National Park is one of the most popular national parks in southern India.

The remarkable monuments of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh speak of the architectural genius of the Qutub Shahi rulers, and it was from the Golconda mines, the most magnificent of diamonds, the Kohinoor, was extracted in 1656.Pondicherry is different from the rest of India as French influence are still visible particularly in the policeman’s red Kepis of belts, the spellings on signboards, the massive French Consulate-General and the Hotel de Ville.

WEST

Gujrat the place which gave birth to Mahatma Gandhi, is actually also the birth place of the 4000 Indus valley civilisation. This mythical land is the place where Lord Krishna was present to witness the creation of the Universe. Gir forest is also a mighty place for tourism.

Rajasthan is the most colourful and exotic of all Indian states. Almost every town in this state is marked by strong fortresses, which also served as palaces, covered with exquisite filigree and latticed and mosaic work. This state offers Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaiselmer and Udaipur, the four most famous forts as well as the Ranthambhor national park, for the nature lovers. For a camel ride across the Thar Desert, one should visit Bikaner. It is also known for its mouthwatering snacks, called Bhujiyas, and camel milk tea.

Goa, is a tropical paradise, India’s party central, the original land of the hippies, sun, sand and surf, and India’s biggest contribution to World peace after Mahatma Gandhi. Formerly a Portuguese colony, Goa joined the Union in 1961, and is the biggest tourist attraction for Westerners, especially during Christmas and New Year.

Just like West Bengal has Kolkata as the intellectual capital of India, similarly Mumbai in Maharashtra is the economic engine of not only India, but the entire Asia. Along with Hongkong, this megacity is drives the economy of the region, a city which truly never sleeps. Home of Bollywood, this is the favourite city of westerners visiting India with arguably the best nightlife in the country. But Maharashtra is not just Mumbai. Hill stations like Lonavla and Khandala, seat of Maratha Empire, and Oxford of the East, Pune are the other main attractions.

“The Soul which will make INDIA progress”

Dated: 26th May’2014 the 15th Prime Minister of India “Narendra Damodardas Modi” took his oath. He is the first Prime Minister of India who is born after the Independence (born September 17, 1950), person with the blazing glory and personal charisma.

He possess incredible leadership skills with facilitative, participative

and empowering in how visions and goals are established and carried out. Known for his astute administrative skills and has a record for being incorruptible. He has all these qualities and he is a complete person.

Coming from a family of street merchant rose as a politician in the early age with the support of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), a Hindu nationalist political party. He was an average student with no remarkable academic achievements or pursuits. But successfully completed his Master degree in Political science.

Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001–14 holding the helms of affairs for Gujrat. Modi was a key strategist for the BJP in the successful 1995 and 1998 Gujarat state election campaigns. He became Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 and served longer in that position than anyone else to date. In 2002, he was alleged to be responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Muslims during civil unrest, but he was later exonerated. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which resulted in an outright majority for the BJP in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – the last time that any party had secured an outright

majority in the Lok Sabha was in 1984. Modi campaigned hard, portraying himself as a pragmatic candidate capable of turning around India’s economy. With such wave-full political career he proved himself to be worthy for the position he possess.

Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 at the Rastrapati Bhavan. In a first of its kind, Modi invited all SAARC leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony; the attendees included Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam of Mauritius (SAARC observer), Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, and Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could not attend since she had a scheduled state visit to Japan and deputed the Speaker of National Parliament of Bangladesh to attend the ceremony on her behalf.

After continuous troubled relationship with western nations where his entry was boycotted finally he was welcomed by US after he became the Prime Minister of India in 2014.

The political story of “Narendra Damodardas Modi” portrays him as an outstanding person who rose from the Indian soil to mould Indian economy to a vessel with flourishing flowers whose fragrance will be felt in all the continents through his acts and whose appearance could be seen through the progress graph of India. Hope he keeps the good work moving day by day, more efficient and faster and his tenure creates a history.

New Zealand and India enjoy a long standing and warm relationship. Common historical links mean that we share the same language, the same democratic traditions and a passion for cricket. New Zealand has one of the most attractive economies in the world in which to do business. Since undertaking a far-reaching and comprehensive programme of economic reform in the 1980s, New Zealand stands out as a country well adapted for long-term competitiveness. It offers an extensively deregulated, low-cost and resource-rich environment, ensuring its attractiveness as a place to do business.

New Zealand - India Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

India is New Zealand’s 15th-largest bilateral trading partner. For the year ended June 2013, overall goods trade between the two countries was over NZ$ 1.1 billion. Of that total, $725.912 million was New Zealand exports going to India, making India our twelfth-largest export destination. Even this figure understates the importance of the Indian market, with exports having increased rapidly from just NZ$366 million five years earlier, reflecting India’s emerging economic power. It is predicted that by 2025, India will be third-largest economy in the world.

India is also a key services market. India has quickly become New Zealand’s second-largest source of international

students. There were 11,349 international fee-paying students from India in New Zealand in 2011, nearly double the number in 2008. Over 29,000 Indians visited New Zealand in 2012, preferring to come during their summer (April to June) making them a valuable source of visitors for New Zealand’s autumn shoulder season. This is in addition to the vibrant Indian community of well over 100,000 residents throughout New Zealand.

In recognition of these trade trends as well as its political influence on the world stage, India is a priority relationship for New Zealand and is our most developed relationship in South Asia. The New Zealand Government is implementing an interagency strategy that is working towards India being a core trade, economic and political partner for New Zealand by 2015. The NZ Inc India Strategy, launched by Prime Minister John Key in October 2011, has several broad economic goals that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will help achieve. These are:

Grow merchandise exports to at least NZ$2 billion per

year by 2015;

Grow services trade with India by an average of 20

percent a year;

Improve the bilateral investment framework and

facilitate growth in the investment relationship; and,

Attract and retain skilled migrants from India who are

able to make an effective contribution to New Zealand’s

economic base.
