Indian Army
INTRODUCTION
The Indian Army is the land based branch and the
largest
component of the Indian Armed Forces. With about
1,100,000 soldiers in active service and about
1,150,000
reserve troops, the Indian Army is the world's largest
standing volunteer army. The basic responsibility of the
Army is to safeguard the territorial integrity of the nation
against external aggression. Due to the country’s long
borders lines, in different geographical and climatic
conditions such as desert (Rajasthan), snow-covered
mountains (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh) and
rainforest mountainous jungles (Arunachal Pradesh,
Assam, and West Bengal), the Army has to constantly
prepare itself for diverse challenges. It also conducts
humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities
and other disturbances. Indian Army also plays aimportant role
in organizing relief operations during
natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and cyclones
and in the maintenance of essential services. The
President of India is the Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), having a rank of General,
is a four star commander and commands the army. The
highest Post in Indian Army is Field Marshal. Demands on
the Army have increased manifold due to continuousdeployment of
its forces in intense counter insurgencyoperations in Jammu &
Kashmir and the North East parts
of the country. To achieve these objectives, the Army hasto be
constantly modernized, suitably structured,
equipped and trained. The Indian Army came into being
in 1947, and inherited most of the infrastructure of the
British Indian Army that were located in post-partition

Recent site activity
India. It is a voluntary service and although a provision
for military conscription exists in the Indian constitution,
it has never been imposed. Since independence, the army
has been involved in four wars with neighboring
countries, Pakistan and China. Indian Army has also been
an active participant in United Nations peacekeeping
missions. Indian Army as a major component of
national power, along with the other two forces,Indian Navy and
the Indian Air Force, the rolesof the Indian Army are as
follows:
Primary Goal is to Preserve nationalinterests and safeguard
sovereignty,territorial integrity and unity of Indiaagainst any
external threats by deterrenceor by waging war.
Secondary Goal is to Assist Government
agencies to cope with ‘proxy war’ andother internal threats and
provide aid tocivil authority when requisitioned for
thepurpose.
The Indian Army is organised into six commands:
HQ Central Command, LucknowHQ Eastern Command, CalcuttaHQ
Northern Command, UdhampurHQ Western Command, Chandimandir
HQ, South Western Command, JaipurHQ Southern Command, Pune.Army
