Relax and Enjoy during IANCON 2019 October 3-6, 2019
Vol. No. 29 Issue No. 02 September, 2019
My first memory of Dr K K Sinha takes
me back to my school days nearly fiy years
back. At that me he was posted in
Rajendra Medical College, Ranchi (RMCH)
– now known as RIMS. My father was also
posted there and we used to live in the
same Doctors' Colony of RMCH. At that
me he was to me - one of my many
friendly neighbourhood uncles. At that
me RMCH had a ga laxy of great
academicians and clinicians on its faculty
and he had just joined that great group.
But, very soon his reputaon started
spreading like wild fire and he started
becoming famous. I realized this when
many of my friends and relaves started
asking us to book an appointment with
him.
Dr Krishna Kant Sinha, popularly
known as 'Dr K K Sinha', was born on 11 Jan
1931 at Maner near Patna in Bihar. His
inial schooling was at Maner itself where
his father was a teacher. He was bright in
studies right from the beginning and
passed his matriculaon in 1946 in the first
division – which was a big thing those days.
Aer that he joined the presgious BHU
( B e n a r a s H i n d u U n i v e r s i t y ) f o r
Intermediate Science (I Sc). At that me Dr
S Radhakrishnan was the vice chancellor of
BHU and Dr K K Sinha oen narrated many
of his anecdotes to his students. Aer that
he started h is medica l studies at
Darbhanga Medical College (DMCH) and
passed MBBS with flying colours in 1953.
He got gold medals for topping in medicine
and surgery. He had Honours in Medicine
which was a rare disncon those days. He
Dr. K.K. Sinha, MD, FRCP, FICP, FIAN
did his MD in medicine also form DMCH
and served there for two years as Resident
Medical Officer.
His next leap was in 1958 when he
decided to go for advanced training and
MRCP to England. He had intense
preparatory training in Edinburgh General
Hospital and Royal Infirmary which he
called 'highly educave and smulang'.
He was trained by brilliant teachers like
Stanley Davidson of “Davidson's Principle
& Pracce of Medicine” fame and Donald
Hunter, the Editor of famous book of
Robert Hutchison's 'Clinical Methods'. He
sharpened his clinical skills with these
great teachers of Edinburgh Medical
University. He completed his MRCP in
1959 from Edinburgh and worked there as
resident in neurology & neurosurgery in
different hospitals of United Kingdom.
He returned homeward in 1961.
Before joining the newly started Ranchi
Medical College as a tutor in medicine
department he also worked in Patna
M e d i c a l C o l l e g e f o r s o m e m e .
Incidentally, he was the first teacher to join
the newly formed department of Medicine
of this new medical college. Within three
years he became a lecturer in medicine and
neurology.
As me passed his love for neurology
became more intense and he decided to go
to USA where he worked in Veterans
Hospital in Hynes, Chicago of North
Western University Medical School. This
was a huge hospital with 275 beds for
Neurology alone. He gained experience by
working here with great neurologists and
came back to Ranchi aer some me.
Apart from RMCH he started his own
private pracce also. Soon his popularity
went soaring high and he became one of
the first choices of paents for medicine
and neurology not only for undivided state
of Bihar and Jharkhand but for the whole of
Eastern India.
Govt of Bihar banned private pracce
in Bihar in 1976 and within a week he
resigned from service as it was not possible
for him to deny services to huge number
of paents in his private pracce. Even
aer resigning from RMCH he connued
t e a c h i n g a n d m e n t o r i n g m a n y
postgraduate students in his own private
clinic. His students say that he had very
good grasp of all branches of medicine and
could teach cardiology, psychiatry,
neurosurgery for hours together. It is very
rare and difficult for a busy praconer like
him to keep his academic interest alive. He
took part in lot of academic acvies and
started an Academic Medical Forum for
updang the medical skills and knowledge
of doctors by mutual interacon on a
regular basis. He also started a journal,
'Physician India'. His academic skills and
inclinaons were noted by Neurological
Society of India and in 1984 he was given
the responsibility of publishing the
CME book of “Progress in Cl inical
Neurosciences” and convening the CME
programs. Next year this publicaon came
out with contribuons from various
neurosciensts of India and abroad. The
impact was so strong that he was given the
responsibility of bringing out this annual
CME publicaon from 1985-1990.
He was the founder secretary of
Associaon of Neurosciensts of Eastern
India (ANEI) in 1990 and connued ll
1997. The first CME of ANEI was organized
at Ranchi in 1991 and he started a CME
book “Advances in Clinical Neurosciences”
as founder chief editor. He was again the
founder chief editor of an addional
supplement book, “Some Aspects of
History Neurosciences” from 2000 to 2004
of which 4 edions were published .
To his credit he had numerous honours
and awards conferred upon him by medical
and non-medica l organisaons. A
popularity survey by Hindustan,a Hindi
newspaper found him to be the most
popular person in Jharkhand- beer than
chief minister and policians of that me.
This was largely because he was considered
an excellent physician with a healing touch
and a humane approach- physician with a
golden heart.
He was awarded Fellowship of Royal
College of Physicians ( FRCP). In 2000 he
was unanimously elected the founder
chairman of The Associaon of Physicians
of India, Jharkhand chapter. He was also

“JUST A TRIM TAB"
Prof P. M. Dalal was a trim tab for stroke
in India. The trim tab is a small rudder
which turns the big rudder so that a huge
ship can go in the right direcon. He gave
direcon to stroke care in India. His name in
India and internaonally is synonymous
with stroke. He was a giant and I have been
lucky to be trained by him.
He was born on 29th January, 1932 in
Ahmadabad (Gujarat- India). In MBBS and
MD he got the Gold Medal for ranking first
in Mumbai university.
In 1960-62 he was awarded the
R o c ke f e l l e r f o u n d a o n r e s e a r c h
fellowship in neurology. and neuro
pathology and went to Harvard medical
school, Boston (USA). Here he came in
contact with Prof. Raymond Adams and
Prof. C. Miller Fisher who shaped his
thinking and ignited his interest in stroke.
In 1966 he along with Prof. R. Adams and C.
M. Fisher wrote the Cerebra vascular
disease chapter of the Harrison principal of
internal medicine, a great achievement at
that me.
In 1968-69 he went as a research fellow
to Oxford, where he did some pioneering
work on lab thrombolysis which was
published in the Nature Journal. Later he
came back to India and joined the B Y L Nair
hospital. Here he connued to pursue
research in stroke and was one of the
pioneers to publish stroke epidemiology
from India. He was one of the first
Neurologists to acvely do direct puncture
carod angiography in the1960's. In 1978-
81 he was the DST/ICMR- All India
coordinator for stroke studies and during
1980-86 was appointed the WHO expert
member on the Internaonal panel on
neurosciences. In 1983 he was nominated
as a research scienst to the NIH- USA. In
1987 he gave the Prof. Jacob Chandy
oraon in the neurological society of India.
In 1995 he was awarded the presgious BC
Roy award. In 2004 he received the
Lifeme achievement award on stroke
from Neuroscience India Group. He
pursued a muldimensional career while
also serving as the chief of neurosciences in
H. N. hospital and research center and as a
consultant neurologist at Lilava hospital
and research center. He was a prolific
writer and had more then 120 naonal
and internaonal publicaons to his
credit.
In life I would say nothing maered more
to him than paents and the science. He
was a strict disciplinarian. One of my
profound memories was of the me we
would work well late in to the night as
students at Nair hospital in his unit, filling
out detailed neurological examinaon for
the next day rounds. In his life, he trained a
number of neurologist who have then gone
on to be leaders in their fields. He would
oen say, " I would rather be a teacher than
a friend to my juniors". His passion for
excellence in science was the driving force
behind all his acvies. His passing away
from a prolonged illness is a great loss to
stroke/ neurology in India and the world.

had numerous publicaons to his credit in
various naonal and internaonal journals.
His area of special interest included
hereditary ataxia in Eastern India, Japanese
Encephalis, Movement Disorders,
Parkinson's disease, Wilson's disease &
other hereditary and genec Disorders of
the Nervous system. In spite of his busy
clinical schedule he was acvely involved in
organizing various state and naonal level
conferences from me to me including
the historic first annual conference of
Indian Academy of Neurology - IAN at
Ranchi in 1993 .
He was a very acve social worker. He
never missed his daily roune of walking
and reading and did find some me for
gardening.
He was unwell for some me and thbreathed his last on 26 April 2019 at his
residence, 'Mansarovar' in Bariatu, Ranchi.
He has le behind his mourning family of
w i f e , a s o n , t h r e e d a u g h t e r s ,
grandchildren, a large number of friends,
relaves and his dear paents whom he
served nearly ll his end. With his
brilliance, his immense knowledge and
experience and his sympathec non-
commercial humane approach to paents
he has set a very high standard of medical
treatment for all others to learn and follow.
A journalist of Kushwant Singh's
repute visited him in 1980 and he wrote in
his column-“ Ranchi is known for two
things- Main Road and Dr K K Sinha” and so
say all of us. Dr K K Sinha will always remain
alive as long as his paents, students and
friends live. May his soul rest in peace.

Dr. C.M. Sharma
With profound grief I share with you the
sad news of sudden demise of Dr. Chandra
Mohan Sharma, Senior Professor and unit
h e a d ( E x H e a d o f D e p a r t m e nt o f
Neurology) at SMS Hospital, Jaipur. He
passed away on the un-fateful morning of
15th August, 2019.
Born on 6th May 1959 in a religious
family, Dr. Sharma was an obedient son of
Smt. Late Pushpa Devi Sharma and
eminent Neurologist of Jaipur Dr. Brij
Mohan Sharma. His grandfather (BABA),
Pandit Deen Dayal Sharma, was a famous
astrologer of his me whom Ex Prime
minister Smt.Indira Gandhi used to visit
from me to me in Jaipur. His younger
brother, Dr. Shashi Mohan Sharma is an
esteemed Cardiologist and an Addional
Principal of SMS Medical College Jaipur. He
was fortunate to have a very kind and
caring wife, Mrs. Swa Sharma and two
loving daughters, Dr. Shanoo and Shradha
Sharma. He was an ardent supporter and
promoter of “Be Bachao Be Padaho”
campaign. Both his daughters are highly
educated and extremely independent
females. An extremely spiritual and god
loving man, Dr. C.M. Sharma was a firm
believer in “KARMA”. He loved music and
traveling, and had explored almost more
than half of the world. He always led an
extremely disciplined life with an in depth
knowledge of current and polical affairs.
Dr. Sharma did his MBBS from SMS
Medical College Jaipur, 1977 Batch. Always
with a smile on his face, he was the blue
eyed boy of his batch and was a favourite
amongst his batch mates. He used to take
part in cultural programs of college
including mimicry of teachers etc. He did
his MD in General Medicine from SMS
Medical College Jaipur in 1987 and DM in
Neurology from King Edward Memorial
Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas
Medical College, Mumbai in 1990. Later he
joined SMS Medical College, Jaipur as an
Assistant Professor in the department of
Neurology in 1991. He always had utmost

regard for his teachers and made it a point
to visit them on the occasion of 'Guru
Poornima'. Dr. B.S. Singhal, Dr. Parveena
Shah and Dr. Nadir E Bharucha were among
his most admired teachers.
He was a well known clinician and
neurologist, with a stethoscope, hammer
and ophthalmo-scope always by his side,
treang and serving his paents with
utmost care and compassion. Always
talking about basics of Neurology, bedside
neurological examinaon and discussion of
differenal diagnosis while taking rounds
of the ward at the SMS hospital where he
worked, Dr. C.M. Sharma encouraged the
residents at the hospital to read text books
and monograms more and more. He
believed in team work and laid emphasis
on a disciplined way of working. He always
appreciated and movated his students,
and I was fortunate enough to be the first
registered DM candidate under him and
also worked as a faculty member with him
ll his last day. More than 50 of his papers
have been published in various Naonal
and Internaonal medical journals and
apart from epilepsy neuromuscular
disorders, degenerave ataxias and
demyelinang disorders were his areas of
interest.
Post taking charge as the 'Head of
Department of Neurology' at SMS hospital,
through his persistent efforts he got the
whole wing renovated comprising of a new
electrophysiology lab, air-condioned
wards with quality maresses and clean
sheets (washed from me to me in ward
by machines), cushioned tables for the
aendants to sit at, well equipped seminar
room and departmental library etc. The
cleanliness of the ward and the utmost
care with which the paents were treated
during that me was appreciated by the
then Chief Minister of Rajasthan,
Vasundhara Raje Ji. Even the naonal
media channel like NDTV acknowledged Dr.
Sharma's efforts.
An amazing human being with good
intentions who never compromised with
his principles, he used to believe in the
mantra "Maan Changa To Katho Me
Ganga- eu paxk dBksrh esa xaxk". He was a
perfect family man who always took care of
every one, from his near & dear ones to
distant relaves. He was always the first
one to wish people on their birthdays or
other special occasions. He was never
inclined towards name, fame or posts. An
extremely k ind hearted soul with
compassion towards needy and under
privileged, Dr. Sharma had devoted himself
to selfless service of leprosy families at
“KUSTHA ASHRMA” for almost 30 years.
Every year on 'Naonal Epilepsy Day' he
tried to create awareness by educang the
public by seminars, posters, audio & visual
screening through newspaper, radio and
TV, and by distribung free medicines to
the paents. He even used to help needy
paents financially, the ones who couldn't
afford treatments on their own.
He introduced 'BM Sharma Oraon' in
1997 in the name of his father who was the
founder member of IEA JAIPUR CHAPTER
during Annual Joint Conferences of IEA &
IES at Jaipur where Dr B Ramamurthi
delivered the first oraon.
Dr. C.M. Sharma's passing away is a big
loss to not only his family and loved ones
but also to the whole neurology and
medical fraternity. It is difficult to come
across such an amazing person personally
as well as professionally. He will always be
fondly remembered as one of the most
valued gems of the medical world.

parci-pated in the 3 and half day long
school.
The school comprised of group
learning sessions covering topics of
epilepsy as well as hands-on EEG/video-
EEG learning. The delegates and faculty (as
mentors) were divided into small groups to
encourage self learning, discu-ssions and
direct interacons with the experts. The
topics discussed during the group learning
sessions included Classificaon of Seizures
and Epilepsies, Symptomac Epilepsy & its
substrates, Newer AEDs on the block,
Disconnuaon of AEDs, Neonatal and
childhood epilepc encephalopathies,
Women with Epilepsy, Outcomes aer
Epilepsy Surgery and Status Epilepcus. In
addion, 27 lectures were also taken
covering a range of topics from basics of
e p i l e p to ge n e s i s a n d n et wo r ks to
presurgical evaluaon and surgical opons
of drug refractory epilepsy.
The hands-on EEG and video-EEG in
groups covered topics including electr-
odes, montages & acvaon procedures,
EEG artefacts and benign variants, focal
and general ized EEG paerns and
semiology and ictal paerns of temporal
and extratemporal lobe epilepsy. A live
demonstraon of High density (256
channels) EEG with a preceding lecture on
Presurgical evaluaon using Electrical
Source Imaging generated a lot of interest
amongst the audience.
Another highlight was the panel
discussion on SUDEP which helped cleared
many doubts among the delegates.
A Quiz was held on the last day of the
school with the purpose of self assessment
as well as to encourage the delegates. The
