Volume 1, Issue 1 Fiji Community in Australia...

Fiji community has vastly spread in various parts of the world. Australia possi-bly has the largest settlement of former Fijians. The migration system allows on-ly professionals and in recent times trade specialists to settle in Australia. A lot of former Fiji high school teachers along with other professionals from Fiji have made Australia their home. Studying hard in Fiji and earning professional de-grees in various fields made their way to migration. It obviously has been a long journey of academic work which earned them citizenship status there. Austral-ia has the highest number of professionals from Fiji to settle there.

Some former Fiji teachers settled in Sydney, some of whom are former senior Fiji Jaycees officials held a re-union at Mr. Indar Nair’s residence in Sydney. Mr. Nair is a teacher in Sydney and a former principal of Saraswati College in Fiji. The reunion was held while India Fiji Today publisher/editor Arun Maharaj of USA, a former teacher in Fiji was visiting friends in Sydney recently.

The name Air Pacific becomes his-

tory as the airline officially changes

its name to Fiji Airways. In a bid to

promote Fiji to the international trav-

elers the name Fiji associated with

the airline may sell better. The name

Air Pacific has been in use since

1971 and saw the airline grow from

domestic to international carrier. The

name Fiji Airways seems to be new

but the airline carried that since its

inception in 1951 and continued with

the name till 1971 when it changed

to Air Pacific. Along with name

change the shift from using Boeing

747 aircraft on its Los Angeles flight

to using the Airbus will also be new.

Taking a Journey Back to -

T H E D A Y S O F C O M M U N I T Y B A S E D L I V I N G I N F I J I ‘‘There was a time when children in a community in Fiji would respect the elders in the community as they would their par-ents and the elders would guide them as they would their own children.’’ The community based life-style had nothing but ad-vantages that are not seen these days particu-larly here in America. The concept of nuclear and individual lifestyle has set in so much in some

cases that it has dis-tanced people from their very own. Community based living in Fiji had the joy of living together as one large family. The warmth and protection it provided molded chil-dren in to responsible adults. The satisfaction of being respected by the children gave the el-ders confidence in their community to play the leadership roles in their communities.

THE END OF AN ERA...

Everything and life has to end one day. The life of Pran has been a com-

plete one having lived up to 93 years. Having acted in numerous films he

was a household name in India, Fiji and abroad, wherever Indian film lov-

ers lived. He was

probably the most

feared villain ever to

appear in Indian Film

Industry. During his

peak days of Villain-

ous roles in films

such as ’Ram aur

Shyam’, ‘Do Badan’

and many others, his

appearance on the

screen changed the

mood of the audience

as they expected

some trouble to hap-pen on the screen.

Later on he played

other character roles which have been extremely mature and noble roles.

The many islands sur-rounding the major islands make Fiji a magnificent destination for tourism. Denarau Is-land, made for tourism is truly serving its demand. The influx of tourists shows the popularity of the island, not too far from Fiji’s Gateway, the Nadi International Airport.

Transportation business is an important

business which deals with the safety and

life of the general public. There are many

busses and taxis operating in the various

parts of the city and surrounding. The

grounding of buses of for safety checks is

a necessary step taken by the transport

authorities. Recently there seem to have

been an increase in bus related fire which

in some cases has been fatal. It is impera-

tive that the public transport be in sound

condition for the public’s safety.

The prestigious farming of sandal-

wood in Bua Vanualevu has been a

major part of Fiji’s history. The farming

ceased to operate on big scale dec-

ades back. However, it seems the

farming is being revived with the effort

of some entrepreneurs. Sadly an ex-

isting farm seem to have been de-

stroyed by fierce fire that put the

farmer in loss of hundreds of thou-

sands of dollars.

The disappearance of movie theatres from

most of Fiji’s towns have left the towns with

less activities. The current cinema houses

in Suva and Lautoka do not seem sufficient

for the cinema goers. The introduction of

home movies called off the need for movie

theatres years ago. The demand for cine-

ma houses seem to be met in Nadi with the

construction of a multiplex cinema. Watch-

ing movies in cinema houses is an enter-

taining activity as a lot of people travel long

distances to travel to Suva to watch mov-

ies.

Many times the drivers are taken to task in

accidents involving children. It seems a

new trend where the parents of an acci-

dent victim may be questioned on their

negligence towards their child. There

have been too many accidents involving

children where the parents could have

provided safety to their children. Innocent

lives have been taken due to their negli-

gence. Strict penalties to careless parents

may result in the safety of the innocent

children who depend on their parents for

their safety.

At this time Fiji seems to be experienc-

ing wonderful cool weather, particularly

in the Central Division. Fiji generally ex-

perienced warm weather most of the

year in recent years due to climate

changes. The constant rain in the Suva

area makes it even cooler and comfort-

able. As winter is experienced in the

neighboring Australia and New Zea-

land, it is the cooler period of the year

for Fiji as it has tropical climate.
