Dr. L. Subramaniam ConcertKanchana Ishwar
I would like to write a few words about a recent event held in Indianapolis – namely a violin music concert by the duo Dr. L. Subramaniam and his teenage son Ambi. The concert was held on September 11th at the University of Indianapolis Crystal De Haan Fine Arts Center.
Dr. Subramaniam needs no introduction to lovers of Carnatic music. Moreover, he is the only musician who has recorded both Carnatic Classical and Western Classical music, having received prominent recognition across the globe. Indianapolis was privileged to have hosted an artiste of his caliber. Thanks to the CMAI and IAI Fine Arts committees for their efforts in putting this event together.
I think, in recent memory, this was probably the best attendance I have seen at a classical music concert – the hall was full, which is unfortunately a rare occurrence here. The concert, in my opinion, was superb. I was particularly impressed with the youngster, who effortlessly seemed to keep up with the senior. The first composition in Raga Hamsadhvani was a popular piece “Vatapi Ganapathi” in praise of Lord Ganesha. Coincidentally, the day of the concert was Ganesh Chathurthi, so this was a very fitting selection. The artiste dwelled on this number for the entire first half of the concert, delving into the depths of the raga, with a display of both melody and mastery over the instrument. The second half encompassed two violin pieces and a percussion ensemble with the mridangam, kanjira (similar to tambourine) and moorsing (could be called a mouth harp).
All in all, an excellent concert kept the audience enthralled, despite a delayed start. My only regret was that I felt somewhat short changed, not on quality, but on quantity.

The MYC comprises of a group of students who serve as the voice of Indianapolis youth in city government. Some specific things the MYC is responsible for include: working with the Mayor to develop city policies focused on youth issues, advising the Mayor of important youth issues in Indianapolis, working to build partnerships with other youth organizations, volunteering at community events throughout the city and being active in local schools and reaching out to other young people they represent.
Keep up the good work Kuren!
IAI Congratulates Raju Chinthala Congratulations to Raju Chinthala, Vice-Chairman of IAI Board of Trustees, for being appointed to serve on the City of Indianapolis Public Safety Advisory Board. The board members were selected based on their prominence in the community and their diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. The primary purpose of the Board is to advise the Department of Public Safety on its various programs and initiatives. In addition to this most recent appointment, Mr. Chinthala also serves on the Marion County Convention and Recreational Authority, Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC), Sister City Committee, and Public Safety Personnel Task Force. Mr. Chinthala also led the Mayor’s delegation to India in 2010 and played a key role in building a sister city relationship between Indianapolis and Hyderabad.
Keep up the good work Raju! It is great to see someone from our community be active at the city level in public services’ offices.
Pakistan Flood Relief Wilfred Mascarenhas, Treasurer - Board of TrusteesIAI-Board would like to thank the community members for their outpouring of support to aid Pakistan Flood victims. IAI pledged $2000 to the Flood Relief efforts through the Red Cross using the emergency social
services funds. We are still short of reaching our goal of $2000. It is important for us to reach this goal to ensure we have sufficient funds to support future such disasters in a timely manner. Recent disasters we have been able to support through the social services funds include Haiti Earthquake Relief, Andhra Pradesh Flood Relief, Wheeler Mission, etc. Each time we have been successful in reaching our goal and replenishing the funds sent. We hope each one of you will consider a donation of just $10 or more. Donations can be made online at http://myiai.org or by mailing a check to IAI, c/o Wilfred Mascarenhas, 8258 Cloverdale Way, Indianapolis, IN 46256. Please mention Pakistan Flood Relief in the check memo.
The Indianapolis Pakistan Association has expressed their deepest gratitude to the Indian community for the outpouring of support in the past for the earthquake disaster relief and now for the Flood Relief.
IAI Thanks the Bhargavas
Many individuals within the community have been strong pillars of support for India Association of Indianapolis (IAI) over the past many years. One such couple is Mrs. Madhu and Mr. Ram Bhargava, owners of Bhar Printing. Due to their generosity and efforts, IAI has been able to continue to publish the Bharati newsletter free of cost to members and non-members. The Bhargavas have over the years donated significant cash to IAI to offset Bharati costs as well as have provided significant discounts in printing costs. The IAI board on behalf of the IAI community would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Bhargavas for their support and generosity. We look forward to their continued support in the years to come.

Ram S. Ravindran
India has been a political entity for 60 years. Yet, till about 20 years ago, there was not much of integration of the people of India. Most of the people stayed in their own states, worked in the same state, married people from the same state (Often from the same caste group) and did not have a chance to develop a larger “Indian” perspective.
If you notice most of the Indians who live in the US feel quite at ease wherever they live in the US. Why is it so? In the US the language spoken is the same, the stores you shop at are the same, the restaurants you eat at are the same and the layout of the neighborhood is the same. So they are more at ease moving with fellow Indians here than in India.
Things are changing in India too. Students attend various national and regional colleges (the selection for them is nationwide) and private schools (any Indian can attend them). More people are now employed by the private industries and foreign multinational companies (comprehension of English is required to work in these places). They don’t care about which part of India a software programmer is from (there is no political pressure to favor “bhoomiwallahs”) People eat more Indian cosmopolitan food... American branded food joints and beverages have unified the eating habits of Indians (you can find Coke in every village of India) and set an example for Indian companies to develop a national presence. The vast majority of the kids in India now attend English medium matriculation schools. Even an average Ram, Kripal or Salim speaks a mixture of English and local language. Golden triangle national highways and inexpensive airplane tickets make it easier to travel all over India. Reality shows like Indian Idol bring together people from all over India. 24-hour news channels broadcast news from all over India. Cable TV is also unifying India. More and more young people have a chance to get to know fellow Indians from different parts of India and choose their life partners from among them...
In the US, the second generation American-Indian kids are more comfortable speaking American English. They prefer mostly American food. More and more kids marry another Indian-American no matter what the linguistic background of their
parents might be. Lately, I have attended several such weddings of second generation Indian young folks. Without much negative pressure from the older relatives, the parents of these young adults consent to these marriages. Hopefully by the time India turns 100 Indians will identify themselves as Indians and not as a provincial person. Hopefully, the politicians will not practice divisive politics (and blame it on the ex-British rulers). The lifestyle of the overseas Indians will impact the Indians in India and bring about greater integration as well. k
Kindness
Be kind to all, let your spirit liftThose whose lives may be adrift;Be pleasant and always wear a smile;Let that be your “kindness style”.
Be kind to all, don’t be sad and blueIf you smile, your sun can shine throughLet God’s heavenly love divineAround your happy heart entwine.
Be kind to all for life is frailSometimes on stormy seas you’ll sail,But “God” is there, You won’t be aloneBecause of the “Kindness seeds” you’ve sown.

Dear Readers,
I hope you and your loved ones are in the best of health and spirits.
With great enthusiasm, IAI launched its electronic newsletter, e-Bharati, in Feb 2008. I am sure you have gotten significant value from the various articles published in different Corners of e-Bharati. My profuse thanks to all those who shared their knowledge and experiences with the community at large.
Publishing e-Bharati was need of the time; both from technology and economic points of view. Although e-Bharati was attractively designed with state-of-the-art features to organize and search content and to rotate advertisements from sponsors, its success was bound to the quality and amount of content that you – the community – contributed. Up until the beginning of this year the flow of content was sufficient to release monthly issues of e-Bharati. However, I am sorry to report that lately there has been a lull in contributions; so much so that its publication frequency had to be dropped to once a quarter to coincide with publication of Bharati – the printed newsletter of IAI.
Publishing Bharati is expensive. Neither it is green. We
live in the e-world surrounded by computers and smart phones, so there is no reason to not use these tools to access/share information. I am repeating my humble request to you to contribute regularly to e-Bharati on the topics you are expert in or you want to know more about – anything from travel to technology, wealth to health, social to legal, recipes to remedies. Please remember, e-Bharati was meant to be your magazine, your medium to communicate through, and your means to exchange your thoughts with the community. e-Bharati has a pool of talented moderators, please put them to work by generously contributing articles so that those who have come to expect e-Bharati in their inboxes do not go disappointed.
This may be my last appeal as editor of e-Bharati. Please make sure that e-Bharati flourishes from here on with the content and advertisements you post in it. Please send your article to any of the moderators of e-Bharati Corners by using the link Submit Article on the e-Bharati Web page (http://ebharati.myiai.org)
Be well and stay engaged with community through e-Bharati.
