About This Publication

This Index  to Astronomy Magazine's Atlas of the Stars  was created to augment the Atlas  which was publishedby Kalmbach Publishing Co.

This Index  was independently created by close examination of every object identified on all 24 double pagemaps in the Atlas  then combining all the results into the 7 complete indices.

Additionally, the author created the diagrams on the next 2 pages to show the overlapping relationships of all

the Atlas  maps in the Northern and Southern hemispheres of the sky.

A page of "Errata" was also added as part of the process. If you find other mistakes in the Atlas  I would beinterested in noting them in the Errata section. You can send comments to: rascwebmaster [at] shaw [dot] ca.

Index to the Constellations

In the following table, the column "Map" indicates the map referenced in the Constellations tables on pages 17and 20 of the Atlas.

The column "Maps" shows every map number (and Left or Right page) on which the constellation:•  has its name printed on that page and objects plotted within it

•  "-" doesn't have its name printed on that map page but has objects plotted within it (e.g. 4L-)•  "x" has its name printed on that page but no objects are plotted within it (e.g. 19Rx)•  "-x" doesn't have its name printed on that page and has no objects plotted (e.g. 8L-x)

Index to the Brightest Stars

The table below lists the 31 brightest stars (their rank) as well as some additional stars plotted by name orBayer letter in the Atlas. This table differs slightly from the table on page 21 of the Atlas in the ranking due tothe source of the data for the star's magnitude (this table uses the current V magnitude value from the SIMBADAstronomical Database).

When a star in this table doesn't appear by name on the map in the Atlas, use the designation in squarebrackets e.g. find Alnair by locating α (α (α (α (Alpha) Gruis (which is the possessive form of the name of theconstellation Grus).

Index to the Messier Objects

In the following table, the column "Maps" shows every map number (and Left or Right page) on which theMessier object is plotted. This table is sorted in Messier Number order as compared to Messier Marathon orderon pages 25 and 29 of the Atlas.

This table also contains 110 rather than 109 objects in order to include NGC205 which The Royal

Astronomical Society of Canada recognizes as Messier object number 110. M40/Win4 has not been namedon the Atlas Maps - use its RA and Dec coordinates to locate it. Also, the maps refer to M45 as Pleiades andM102 as NGC5866.

Index to the Caldwell Objects

In the following table, the column "Maps" shows every map number (and Left or Right page) on which theCaldwell object is plotted.

The Caldwell tables on pages 33 and 37 of the Atlas don't present all map numbers for each object.

Also note that all of these objects can be found on the "NGC" or "Other" tables in this Index.

Index to the NGC Objects

In the following table, the column "Maps" shows every map number (and Left or Right page) on which the NGCobject is plotted.

The table includes the Messier objects that have NGC numbers - locate these on the maps using the Messiernumber shown in square brackets.

The table also includes a number of NGC objects that are embedded in the "Fornax Cluster" item plotted onmaps 16 and 17 in the Atlas.

An asterisk (*) after the NGC number indicates the object is on the list of "The Finest NGC Objects" by AlanDyer as published in the Observer's Handbook of The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

The Caldwell NGC objects are shown with the Caldwell number in parenthesis.

Atlas Errata

•  The Atlas tables and maps do not reference M110 (but NGC205 is plotted), M40/WIN4 is not plotted onthe maps, M45 is always shown as the Pleiades and M102 is always shown as NGC5866.

•  On page 4 - "Kemble's Cascade (NGC 1502)" - The Cascade is a nearly linear asterism of about 20stars in Camelopardalis near  the small open cluster NGC 1502. (see:

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap000814.html )

•  On page 21 - in the "30 Brightest Stars" table, Altair is shown as appearing on Map 12 - it is actuallyfound on maps 14L and 15R

•  On page 34 - Map 8L - M 1-92 the Footprint Nebula, a diffuse nebula, is labeled as a planetary nebula

•  On page 39 - Map 9R - M 1-92 the Footprint Nebula, a diffuse nebula, is labeled as a planetary nebula
