264. Unknown box 191 x 90 x 131mm. Coil with armature and extending rod above scale marked 10 to 100. Small sliding switch bottom right with three sockets centre front. Large battery underneath. Handle on top. Hasp and staple catch. Can be used as a relay. May be quack medical instrument.

265. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) key made by Price & Edwards LTD 208 x 85 x 65mm. Metal cover

secured front right and left mid rear with plate reading 5805-99-541-1439 KEY TELEGRAPH SER. No. PES 169 91 and Mod record plate. Small black bakelite knob with skirt under. OFF ON switch front left. New and complete with all original packaging. These keys were used by the UK navy from mid 1960s. Also made by IMR (International Marine Radio) and FIL (Fleming Industries). These were used by Royal Australian Navy from 1960s to end of Morse in 1990s. Obtained from Melbourne.

266. Relaying sounder Type B contained in glass front wooden box 170 x 173 x 131mm. Glass front section

detaches. Label reads SOUNDER RELAYING TYPE B REF. NO. 10G/138 A ♔ M (indicates Air Ministry) SERIAL

NO. STAMPED O.P.C. 11 AND O.P.C. 12. Terminals marked S T M D (with 500 above) Ⓓ U and Ⓤ (with 500

above). Large magnet at rear. Type B relaying sounder was used for remote control of high power W/T (Morse) transmitters, including transmitters T.70 and T.1087. The operator could be many miles away from the transmitting site, and this instrument, connected to the site by telegraph wires, faithfully followed his/her Morse keying to operate the transmitter. Concurrently, two type A models, of slightly different design, were used for switching HT and LT power supplies in the transmitter and receiver. Both models are differentially wound. Type A (Ref. 5B/117, later designated 10G/117). Power supply: 24v (12-0-12v). Coils 500+500 ohms in parallel. Two used for switching HT and LT by remote control. Type B (Ref. 5B/138, later designated 10G/138). Power supply: 14v ac through a bridge rectifier. Coils 500+500 ohms in series, slugged with closed metal rings round the coils. Used for keying a transmitter by remote control. According to the RAF Museum, Hendon, Type B (10G/138) was a stock item in RAF Stores until ‘some time after 1959’. Obtained from Engadine NSW. BAKELITE below and 10 hole socket marked MAGNUS within triangle. Transformer marked VIKING and F G P B? at corners underneath. 4 hole socket marked EMMCO G P + — next to transformer.

268. Australian army field set (Telephone Set D MKV contained in metal box 251 x 110 x 153mm. Stamped D↑D on front near lid closer. Top marked ???SET and ↑ above 325. Top opening lid with diagram (724 stamped on lid below) and instructions inside. Bell on left hand side with two terminals marked L1 and L2. Battery container centre rear marked D↑D TELEPHONE SET MK V SERIAL NO. 25709 MANUFACTURED BY STANDARD TELEPHONES AND CABLES Pty. Ltd. SYDNEY 1942. Small key similar to #3 mounted in front. Buzzer with two dials each marked LOCK. Below key is sliding frame marked PRESS KEY WHEN FINISHED and telephone handset with four pin plug stamped S.T.&C. D↑D. Lever marked PRESS KEY WHILE SPEAKING TELE HQ NO. 2. To left is four hole socket and also in section with handset is set of headphones connected below 4 hole socket marked C-LR ST & C SYDNEY 1942. COMPLETE WITH WEBBING STRAP.

269. US Western Electric sounder. Wooden base 139 x 76mm marked SOUNDER 3B 20 OHMS. Two terminals at rear, brass fittings. Alloy striker marked WESTERN ELECTRIC MADE IN U S A. Mounted in wooden resonator box (270) and used with my dial up set.

272. Australian Simplex Auto semi automatic key S# 5382. Black wrinkle paint base 151 x 76mm. Sloping bridge with plate reading THE SIMPLEX AUTO N0 5382 (REGD.) MANUFACTURED BY LEO. G COHEN MELBOURNE VIC. Pivot screw under base. Damper at rear left. Round pendulum and weight. Black bakelite finger thumb pieces. Screw holes for feet have been drilled right through base in lieu of usual blind holes.

273. Australian Simplex Auto semi automatic key. S# 3816. All nickel plated. Base measures 151 x 76mm. Square bridge with label reading THE SIMPLEX AUTO NO. 3816 (REGD.) LEO G. COHEN. MELBOURNE. VIC. With pivot screw right hand end. Damper on rear left. One terminal screw on dash post and other at rear immediately to left of arm. Round pendulum and weight. Flat dot spring is U shape at contact end. Black bakelite finger/thumb pieces.

276. Australian army daylight signalling lamp set used in both WW1 and WW2. Metal case 212 x 162 x 192mm. Two opening top sections one with label LAMP SIGNALLING DAYLIGHT SHORT RANGE 20330 CASE MARK I AUST. Other marked D↑D DH. Label side contains tin 105 x 78 x 45mm containing spare globes and fittings and batteries. Metal instructions plate under lid. Other side compartment has WT8AMP No. 2 key under lid with other connections. Black bakelite base under connections P.M.G. D↑D. Small metal instruction plate under lid. Compartment contains lamp assembly 100mm diameter, 3 piece ground spike, 3 coloured plastic discs 95mm diameter and 5 hole metal disc 95mm diameter with rotating under portion. Complete with webbing carry strap. Obtained from Cooma NSW.

MANUFACTURED BY LEO. G. COHEN. MELBOURNE VIC. Pivot screw top right. Round pendulum one weight. Black bakelite finger and thumb pieces. Cord attaches to dash post screw and earth screw immediately to left under base. Obtained from Canberra Feb. 2007 and said to have been previously owned by Brian Spencer who was a Telegraphist, Supervisor and then Instructor in Sydney and given to Basil Morrissey by Brian. Brian was also my instructor in the Telegraphist Training School class located in the Sydney GPO in 1950. This is my everyday workhorse.

282. Imperial 55 typewriter. Standard upper case only typewriter used by PMG Department for Telegraphists and

Phonogram Operators. Black with 55 Imperial 55 decal on front and 165 (position number in operating room at which it was used) painted above. 3750 stamped on back of centre ‘key guide’ in key container section and top right when viewed from back. 8/518 stamped on bottom right viewed from back. Chrome plated levers on either side of key container push down to allow key container to slide out. Imperial 55 typewriters were made in both single case and upper and lower case between 1937 and 1961.

284. UK brown bakelite Bathtub key 125 x 41mm. Top section metal key with brown bakelite knob and skirt. Two bakelite terminals marked REF No. 10A17739. Skirt marked REF No. 10A17790 and REF No. 10A17741 on section under knob. Inside of lower base marked 10F/606. Large clip joins both sections and when raised to skirt, key emits a continuous signal for tracking in case of emergency. Used in allied bomber aircraft. Underneath stamped JOHN MADDOCK & SONS MADE IN ENGLAND with logo above (Lion and VITRIFIED). This is not strictly a telegraph item but the PMG cafeteria was situated on the 9th floor of the adjacent and connected ‘new Sydney GPO’ building and well patronised by Telegraphists from the C.T.O. located on the fourth floor of the ‘old G.P.O.’. Many crockery items finished up there. For later Australian made, different shape cup see #575.

306. 8 Australian metal PMG uniform buttons circa 1946. POSTMASTER GENERAL’S DEPARTMENT • around outside with crown in centre. 23mm large, 17mm medium and 11mm small diameters. On back STOKES & SONS MELBOURNE (abbreviated on smaller buttons). Large buttons were used on uniforms worn by Telegraph Messengers (designation changed to Junior Postal Officer very shortly before I entered the PMG Department in August 1946, Postmen (later changed to Postal Officers and Motor Drivers. Medium buttons used on female uniforms and small buttons on cap to secure chin strap. Buttons also made by A. J. Parkes Brisbane (see #367).

307. Reversible PMG metal mailbag label 110 x 35mm. One side embossed P.M.G. and the other stamped AVOCA with Rathscar West written on the reverse. Stamped on the PMG side is PATENTED 31 - 8 . 05 No. 4028. Not strictly a telegraph item but Posts and Telegraphs were closely associated; occasionally telegrams were sent by mail where this would have been quicker.

Back of base has stamp in form of an anchor and 2157. Said to have come from French military disposals. Thomson-CSF is a large French electrical goods company and would have supplied this key to the French Military. The anchor stamp may indicate it was used by the French Navy. Central anvil carries contact and has spring tension mechanism through centre. Removed from WA railway station in 1944 with #193, #195 and #196 and all four thought to have been used together. A similar known unit is stamped on the top ‘HMAS AUSTRALIA RAN BRIDGE’. This is thought to be the WW1 HMAS Australia.

362. Australian P.M.G. telegram delivery bag. This type was introduced in 1936. Previously a bag on a shoulder strap was used. Pig skin and leather bag with attached adjustable leather belt. Measures approx 180 x 140 x 45mm. Leather divider inside to provide compartment for cards which were left when nobody at home to receive delivery. Plain metal clip and keeper. Keeper embossed around circle ‘POST OFFICE COMMUNICATIONS AUSTRALIA’. Earlier bags such as I used in 1946 had the ‘Mercury’ Clip – see pic below right and #563. Obtained from Ballarat 2009.

400. Australian P.M.G. Lead seal pressers. Approx 165 x 65mm. Stamped on side and jaws T.P.O. P.M.G. N.S.W. 64. Item used to seal lead seals threaded on the ends of string which tied mail bags and also lead seals on public telephone tins. String cutter on left. This is not directly related to telegraphy, but on rare occasions where communication lines were cut, telegrams would be copied at the originating office, sent to the nearest and quickest point by mail and then to their destination. T.P.O. indicates Travelling Post Office which was an office within railway vans attached to mail trains to provide a quick overnight mail service to towns along the rail route.
