CERIS’s goal is to develop cutting-edge research in allfields concerning Civil Engineering and related areas suchas Architecture and Environmental Engineering. Involvingmore than 200 PhD researchers and around 300 PhD stu-dents, CERIS is proud of its inclusive culture, where widelydifferent education backgrounds function synergisticallyto link scientific areas with common borders and broadentheir frontiers.2017 has been a very exciting year at CERIS. Its participa-tion in Society has been developed through national andinternational research projects, the leadership of compe-titively-funded Doctoral Programs, advanced private andinstitutional consultancy, the participation in a wide rangeof normative bodies, and an unprecedented presence inthe authorship, review and editing of distinguished inter-national publications. Several prizes and distinctions havebeen awarded to CERIS members, who have also author-ed books on a wide range of subjects. Society outreachhas been intense in the organization and participation ofscientific and technical events. There was even time tomerge education and diversion at CERIS Open Day.This newsletter tries to portray this rainbow of activities(all in a year’s work) and show who we really are, a largesynergy of scientists and educators with different interestsand common ambitions.2018 is a year filled with great expectations for CERIS andI cannot wait for the forthcoming newsletters.

HIGHLIGHTS

1 Professor Fernando Branco is the President of the

International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering(IABSE), for the period 2016-2019. Fernando Branco has been theChair of the Portuguese Group of IABSE, a delegate of thePermanent Committee, and has participated first as memberthen as Chair in Working Commission 8 and the TechnicalCommittee of IABSE. He has been a member of the Executive andAdministrative Committees and the IABSE StrategyGroup. Fernando Branco’s main objectives as President are todevelop the leading path of IABSE, to reach more people, toincrease the network of its members and, essentially, to bring tothe association young engineers.

2 Professor José Saldanha Matos was elected President

of the European Water Association (EWA). He started hisfunctions as President on May 2017. Professor Saldanha Matosjoined EWA in 2005 as a member of the Council. In 2010 hejoined the Management Committee and he was EWA’s Vice-President since 2015. EWA is an independent non-governmental and non-profit making organization dealing withthe management and improvement of the water environment.

3 A 2.9 M€ EU-backed project to foster the adoption of

micro-hydropower energy recovery technology in built waternetworks in the Atlantic Area. To be developed with thecooperation of several institutions, the project Reducing theEnergy Dependency of Atlantic Area Water Networks(REDAWN) has the participation of DECivil/CERIS (coordinatedby Prof. Helena M. Ramos), Instituto Superior Técnico,University of Lisbon.

> Predicting the behaviour of rockfill embankments

Author: João Miguel Gomes Pires MansoSupervisors: João Mateus da Silva (LNEC), Laura Caldeira (LNEC), Rafaela Cardoso (CERIS, IST) Date: December 2017Summary: Despite the vast research on thebehaviour of rockfill embankments, doubts stillexist about the understanding of the physical andmechanical phenomena that occur at theparticulate level. This research studies thesephenomena, mainly focusing in the role thatsuction plays in the material behaviour. Theperformed experimental tests showed that theinfluence of suction decreased with particle sizeand its effect occurs mainly at the surface. Theyalso showed that as suction decreased, thecompressibility of rockfill increased. A series ofnumerical models were also developed. A newmethodology, based in a clump logic, is proposedto built discrete element samples.Several aspects of the rockfill mechanicalbehaviour were studied, such as, the particlebreakage for different stress-suction paths.

This thesis aims tocontribute for the development of better designingtools. The existing methodologies for theprediction of the diameter of jet columns werestudied, and the capacities of particle methods toreproduce jet injection were analyzed. Theexperimental behavior of sand-cement mixtureswas investigated, providing especial emphasis tothe bonding effects and to their axisymmetricundrained response. A phenomenological modelfor sand-cement mixtures was developed, whichfeatures destructuring and the subloading surfaceconcept.

> Consolidation and decontamination of clayey soils using electrokinetic treatment

The present work aims at advances inunderstanding the behaviour of kaolin andbentonite clays under EKT during consolidation anddecontamination. Clayey soils exhibit electro-hydraulic-mechanical coupled behaviour becauseelectrical potential mobilizes water adsorbed bythe clay minerals. This was studied for kaolin andbentonite. EKT tests were performed in a speciallydesigned perspex box. Samples of compactedkaolin prepared with different fluids wereinvestigated. Real time monitoring of EKTtreatment was performed analysing pore fluid andsoil electrical conductivity. A good degree ofdecontamination was achieved for kaolincontaminated with leachate from a landfill nearLisbon.

10 Professor Cunha Marques was distinguished by his academic and scientific

background and contributions to the areas of regulation and evaluation of the performance ofinfrastructure services, with a merit award attributed by IWA - The International WaterAssociation. Besides the merit award, the researcher and Professor Rui Cunha Marques wasinvited to deliver an inaugural lecture at the Tribunal de Contas da União do Brasil.

11 Professor Rodrigo Gonçalves won 2017 SSRC MAJR Medal. The

McGuire Award for Junior Researchers (MAJR Medal) has beenestablished in honor of the late Professor William “Bill” McGuire, a long-termmember of SSRC, who emphasized that state-of-the-art research isinstrumental to improve the quality of stability design. The award recognizesthe research activity of the candidate in a period not exceeding nine yearsafter obtaining his/her Ph.D. degree. Professor Gonçalves will receive theaward and deliver a presentation on his recent research activity at the 2018SSRC Annual Stability Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

12 Professor Rafaela Cardoso was distinguished by

> ATHENS – Advanced Technology Higher Education Network

Venue: IST, DECivil, LisbonDate: 11th - 17th March and 11th – 18th November 2017Summary: Two Athens sessions were held under the scopeof the Atlas of School Architecture in Portugal – Education,Heritage and Challenges (ASAP_EHC - PTDC/A TP-AQI/3273/2014) research project. Athens Programme is ashort duration course (1 week) aiming at carrying outintensive specialization courses to a group of internationalstudents. “From School Memories To A School ArchitectureManifesto Unfolding Lisbon’s School ArchitectureParadigm” counted with 20 students from major Europeantechnological institutions (12 different nationalities).

Each course aimed at engaging students from differentfields (Architecture, Urban Planning, Engineering, Science,Sociology, History, Economics) with designers, scholars,and experts, in deepening the discussion about schoolbuilding architecture. Each session was committed todeveloping a broad basis of debate on the pedagogical,social, cultural, environmental, and design issuesregarding secondary school buildings, and their impact onthe learning experiences and student school life.

Summary: On February 22, 2017, was held at theMuseum of Civil Pavilion at the Técnico (IS%), realizedin the seminar for the introduction of the standardpassive house, organized by Homegrid and LiderA withthe support of the IST DECivil, which had theparticipation of more than 100 people. The session hadthe presentations of Prof. Ana Tomé and Prof. ManuelDuarte Pinheiro on passive performance andsustainability in construction; passive house principlesby Eng. João Marcelino and Eng. João Gavião; and theapproaches of passive and bioclimatic solararchitecture by the specialists Arqt. Francisco Moitaand Arqt. Fausto Simões.

> ASAP – Atlas of School Architecture in Portugal – Education, Heritage and Challenges

Summary: The ASAP (ASAP_EHC - PTDC/A TP-AQI/3273/2014) research project held the firstseminar of school architecture. The seminaraimed at promoting the discussion/debate aboutthe design of school building crossing thedisciplines of architecture and education. In thisrespect, the seminar was attended by invitedspeakers from the educational department of theMunicipality of Lisbon and from differentarchitectural offices that were responsible for therenovations of recent schools in this city. Thepresentation of different projects allowed tograsp different approaches and perspectives inthis thematic. Prof. Francisco Teixeira Bastos [IST]and Prof. Teresa Heitor [IST] chaired the debate.

Summary: Every year AESOP holds its Annual Congress.The attendance of the 2017 edition hosted by IST inLisbon exceeded all expectations, bringing together 955participants from 53 countries of all continents. Such ahigh number of participants and presentations,required the Local Organization Committee lead by JoséAntunes Ferreira to organize 24 parallel sessions, with atotal of 165 individual sessions. 22 roundtable sessionswere organized, as well as14 thematic group meetingsand 4 editorial board meetings: The Journal PlanningTheory, Town Planning Review, European PlanningStudies and Journal Planning Theory and Practice. 20mobile workshops took participants throughout urbansettings of the greater Lisbon area.

In its scope, the edition ofthe digital models and its production by 3Dprinting, FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication),and laser cutting were developed. Summary: The CERIS Open Day brought togetherabout 79 PhD students and PhD researchers atCERIS. The event aimed at promoting theinteraction between young researchers at CERIS.The event included team building activities, oralpresentations, keynotes, a training session onwriting tips for scientific papers and a roundtableon job opportunities after PhD. The event’shighlight was the session “after dinner” whereparticipants made a 3-minute pitch thus leading toa relaxed and fun atmosphere. According to theexecutive board of CERIS the next editions will havethe same success as this first one: “the goal for thenext editions will be to motivate students toparticipate in such events”. The participantsfeedback at the end of the event was, in general,very positive.

> Technical visit to largest Portuguese Waste Water Treatment System / Civil in Motion

Summary: Integrated in the “Civil in motion"initiative, a technical visit was made to thelargest Portuguese Waste Water TreatmentSystem (WWTS) that serves more than 750,000equivalent Lisbon inhabitants.The visit to Alcântara WWTS began with anexplanation of drainage subsystem and itsurban area; the evolution of the treatmentsystem and solutions; the rational of theexisting treatment processed capacity (6 m3/s)and the operation modes of WWTS (in dry andwet weather). Then, the different areas werevisited namely the green roof and its differentecosystems, pre-treatment, primary treatment,biological treatment, disinfection and themanagement system.
