540 Twelve Thousand Years of Human History

Key ContributorMAJOR FINANCIAL CONTRIBU-TOR. Terry Yeager, MD, dedicates this page to the loving memory of his par-ents, Anson and Ada May Yeager, for their lifetime of service to the nation during wartime and to the community of Sioux Falls and the state of South Dakota. Dr. Yeager attended Augustana College and graduated from the Wash-ington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1988. He completed training in Diagnostic Radiology in Hawaii where he met his wife, Steph-anie. They have one son, Mark, who was born while Terry was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 2000. Terry works as a radiologist for Sanford Clinic. Mark Yeager’s Eagle Scout project was one of the markers referenced in this book.Lives of Service: Anson and Ada May (Bidwell) Yeager

Dr. Terry and StephanieYeager

They met in chemistry class at South Dakota State College. He was a West River boy who grew up on a ranch and went to high school in Sturgis and Faith. She was an East River farm girl who went to high school in Colman. There was chemistry between them, but World War II intervened.

Anson was editor of the Collegian when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He dropped out of school early in 1942 and completed Officer Candidate School. The war took him to England, North Africa, Italy, Camp Croft, SC, as com-mander of a training company, and, during the post-war occupation, to Japan.

Ada May graduated State in 1943, and enlisted in the Waves, where she served as a cryptographer in Washington, DC.

Anson found time between assignments to visit Ada May in Washington in May of 1944, where their romance was rekindled. They were married in uniform later that year in the nation’s capital, he with the rank of lieutenant, she with the rank of ensign. They were to have five children.

When Anson was discharged with the rank of captain, he returned to State to complete his education. He joined the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader as a reporter in 1947 and rose to the position of executive editor in 1961. Anson wrote award-winning columns for the paper, many devoted to his travels with Ada May around the world. A collection of his stories was published by the Center for Western Studies in 2000. He was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1998. He died in 2005, she in 2009. They rest side by side in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Top: Anson Yeager became executive editor of the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader in 1961. Bottom, left: Anson Yeager and Ada May Bidwell were married in uniform in Washington, DC, in 1944. Their first child was born while Anson was on Nation-al Guard duty in Alaska during the Korean conflict. Bottom, right: In later years Anson wrote widely acclaimed columns, many based on travels with Ada May.
