01The I ECOTRAIL FUENTES BLANCAS – OMAÑA will take place the 20/07/2013 in the wonderful region of Omaña, León. The start and finish line will be placed in Murias de Paredes, the most important village in the area. The region of Omaña belongs to the Biosphere Reserve of the Valleys of Omaña and Luna and it has a wide range of biological diversity, notably the forest (birches, sabinos) and endangered species, such as the brown bear and the capercaillie. It also has great historical, cultural and touristic heritage. All this will allow the participants of the race and their companions to have a fantastic weekend getting to know this small but amazing region, in which they will be able to immerse in the popular traditions and admire the charm of its peoples, as well as to enjoy the region’s gastronomy and natural environment. This event will merge sport together with ecology, culture, solidarity and tourism. The central axis will be the race, but it will be developed according to very strict sustainability criteria, given that one of the objectives will be to set an example of how to organise sports events minimising the environmental impact in protected areas. We will care for the way in which the race will be advertised, the materials used to mark the route, the flow of traffic in the area intended for the race, the food provided at the provisions stations, waste recycling, and the preparation of sleeping areas and parking spaces, among other activities. Simultaneously to the sports competition, there will be several activities for the audience: activities for children, a cultural tour around the region, book launches and informative talks about ecology and in relation to sustainable lifestyles and viable businesses in the rural environment. Moreover, a tasting of local products coming from ecological agriculture and stockbreeding and some other surprises saved for the prize-giving ceremony and for Saturday’s night. On Sunday, Murias de Paredes will host the 8th Edition of the now traditional “Muestra de Artesanía y Oficios Tradicionales” [Craftsmanship and Traditional Trades Exhibition], which has been taking place for the last 7 years. The exhibition will present several trades such as the manufacture of madreñas [a kind of wooden shoes] and wicker baskets, the spinning of wool, the trade of blacksmiths or wood carving, together with craftsmanship stands and handmade products of the province for sale. The route will have two versions: a harder version or ROUTE A, of 33.5 km and 3,710 m of cumulative elevation gain and a lighter version or ROUTE B, of 23.6 km and 2,038 m of cumulative elevation gain. They will both run across the mountains of Murias de Paredes, Senra, Rodicol, Villabandín and Lazado. The route will start in Murias de Paredes and will go through soil trails, firebreaks, forests and across rivers, areas of Spanish broom, rocky slopes and an endless amount of different landscapes. The routes will finish back where they started, in Murias de Paredes, where a group meal will take place for all participants and for those accompanying them.

02Both routes will leave Murias de Paredes at the same time and will follow the road until Senra (kp 2.0). At this point, they will follow a trail towards the South East, going up until it connects with the firebreak (kp 3.8). The routes turn to the left at the firebreak, following the “Sierra de la Solana” up to the trail which descends to the Rodicol-Villabandín road (kp 6.96) among a forest of oaks known as “El Mortisón”. Before the trail reaches the road, the routes will pass across the river (kp 8.86) and they will then follow this road towards Villabandín until it reaches the “Reguera de la Iglesia” (kp 9.92), where the routes will finally be divided into the more difficult route A and the lighter route B. Both routes will meet again in the provisions station of Fuentes Blancas (kp 24.30), the location after which the race is named.

02Route A, Of 33,5 km, will continue through a soil trail which leaves the “Reguera de la Iglesia” to the right, going up through the “Castro” until it reaches “Feis de Moros” (kp 15.30) (kp 18.70). From this point, the route starts climbing to the “Pico de la Cañada” (2,156 m), going on to “Rabinalto” (2,117 m) and the “Peña La Arena” (2,116 m) (kp 21.00). Here, the route follows a deep slope towards the provisions station of Fuentes Blancas, where it meets route B (kp 24.30).

02Route B, Of 23,6 km, follows the road from the “Reguera de la Iglesia” to Villabandín, an especially beautiful village which has River Uceo running throughout and which holds some altarpieces of high historical value. In Villabandín, the route continues up a trail in parallel with River Uceo towards Fuentes Blancas, where it meets with route A. From Fuentes Blancas, both routes run together again, arriving to the “Collado” of Villabandín, where there is a trail to the right going towards the “Alto de la Curiscada” (kp 26.60). From this point on, the routes will continue downhill until the finish line, following a trail towards Lazado, carrying on until Senra and finally facing the last section back to Murias de Paredes (kp 33.70). This is the description of the route where the race will take place, however, we as organisers would like to show you the endless charms of our region, so there will be a small informative guide with a detailed description of the sites and monuments worth visiting.
