Project Description
The overall goals of your research• Hypothesis and/or research questions
Destination and timeline for the travel and completion of the research project:
• Specific sites you will be visiting • A description of the sites• An explanation of why you will focus on these sites
The goals for the travel portion of the research:• How will your proposed itinerary help answer your
research questions? • Why is travel a necessary part of your research?
The methods you will use to conduct your research
• The overall importance of the project and how it will benefit your academic career
• Examples: contribute to thesis research, professional report, a master’s design project
Detailed travel costs• The specific amount requested from SOA and your
individual contribution

Work with a faculty member• Give your proposal to the professor as soon as
possible to allow time for review before the deadline• Ask the professor to review your methods and
research questions • Ask the professor to review your justification and
why it is necessary to conduct your research

Travel Scholarship Endowments
• Committee allocates funds from endowments
• Endowments have different restrictions

Travel Authorization

Restricted Regions
• Overseen by International Oversight Committee (IOC)
• Processing can take 2– 8 weeks depending on category of risk and time of travel
• If you plan to travel to a restricted region during spring break or summer, you should submit your request to IOC.
• The Travel Scholarship Committee will meet on February 20.
