DefinitionWhat is bullying?

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior, commonly among young adults, that involve a

real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated,

over time.

Types of BullyingVerbal bullying is saying or writing mean things

Teasing, name-calling, taunting, inappropriate sexual comments, and threatening to cause harm

Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships

Spreading rumors, and embarrassing someone in public

Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions

Hitting, kicking, splitting, pushing, and taking or breaking someone’s belonging

Cyber-bullying takes place when electronic technology are involved

Devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites

Effects of BullyingIndividuals who are bullied: Depression Anxiety Health complaints Decline in academic achievement Retaliate through extremely violent measures Suicide/Death

Individuals who bully others: Alcohol and other drugs abuse Get into fights, vandalize property, and drop out of school Criminal convictions  Abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, and friends
