BENEFITS■ The compact size of the Series CRS Cylinder makes it ideal for

applications where cylinder length is critical.

■ Series CRS Cylinders have been tested to 10 million cyclesunder normal conditions.

■ Thru and threaded holes for easy cylinder mounting.

■ Optional accessories provide additional mounting flexibility.

■ Nitrile piston and rod seals for long life and low maintenance.

■ Optional Fluoro-Elastomer seals for greater fluid compatibility.Consult PHD for high temperature use.

■ Field repairable for extended life.

■ Optional shock pads extend cylinder life and minimize pistonnoise in applications where the piston contacts the headand/or cap. The shock pad design adds no additional length tothe cylinder.

■ Available with two piston lengths. The standard piston providesthe shortest possible units. The wide piston provides additionalrod end stability and magnet capability for use with PHDMagnetoresistive and Reed Switches.

■ Switches may be mounted on three sides of the cylinder formaximum flexibility (two sides for 12 and 16 mm sizes) andprovide a signal on extension and retraction with strokes asshort as 1/4 inch [5 mm].

We recommend Series CRS Compact Cylinders. For more information, see PHD’s main catalog.

OPERATING PRINCIPLEThe PHD Three Position Rotary Actuator yields three output

shaft positions. Both the extreme positions and the midposition canbe adjusted in the field allowing a total rotation from 0° to 180° withthe midpoint anywhere between. Pressurizing port C provides fullcounterclockwise rotation (position I). Pressurizing ports B1 and B2at the same time causes the unit to rotate to position II and to holdat that position. The racks are trapped by the piston and rods (B1and B2) and hold the pinion from rotating, creating the positivemidposition. The midpoint adjustment stops allow the midpoint tobe set by changing the lengths that each piston and rod can stroke.Position III is obtained by pressurizing port A driving the pinionshaft to a full clockwise position.

Output positions can be selected in any sequence allowing theactuator to stop at or pass by the midposition.

We recommend Series CTS Compact Guide Rod Cylinders. For more information, see PHD’s main catalog.

BENEFITS■ The compact size of the Series CTS Compact Guide Rod Cylinder

makes it ideal for non-rotating cylinder applications where unitlength is critical. The CTS also performs as a light duty slidewhere precise location is not required and side loading is limited.

■ Compact Guide Rod Cylinders prevent rotation of toolingconnected to cylinder.

■ Standard tool plate allows easy mounting of PHD Series 190 &191 Grippers.

■ Optional blank tool plate is available for customers to add theirown mounting pattern.

■ Diagonal tool plate allows front mounting of the cylinder whilestill permitting full tool plate retraction.

■ Thru and threaded holes for easy cylinder mounting.

■ Flange brackets and optional accessories provide additionalmounting flexibility.

■ Field repairable for extended life.

■ Nitrile piston and rod seals for long life and low maintenance.

■ Optional fluorocarbon seals for fluid compatibility. Consult PHDfor high temperature use.

■ Optional shock pads extend cylinder life and minimize pistonnoise in applications where the piston contacts the head and/orcap. The shock pad design adds no additional length to thecylinder.

■ Switches may be mounted on three sides of the cylinder formaximum flexibility (two sides for 12 and 16 mm sizes) andprovide a signal on extension and retraction with strokes asshort as 1/8 inch [5 mm].

AIR/OIL TANKS AND RESERVOIRS

TYPICAL AIR/OIL TANK CIRCUIT

Circuit showstypical air/oilapplication*. Four-wayvalve feeds air alternatelyto tanks which in turnsupply pressurized oil tohydraulic cylinder.Piston speed onhydraulic cylinder can beregulated as desired withPort Controls as shown,or external flow control valves.

*NOTE: PHD recommends the use of an air/oil piston on unitsfor this type of application. The standard piston and sealconfiguration will allow oil to transfer from one tank to the other.

OIL

AIR

OIL

BENEFITS■ Air/Oil Tanks, pressurized by shop air, provide a simple source

of power for low pressure hydraulic cylinders. They may beused as reservoirs and in conjunction with air/oil boosters.

■ Systems of this type also offer the advantage of being selfpurging because the tanks must be mounted vertically at thehighest point of the circuit.

■ Tanks are capable of moderately fast cycle rates withoutfoaming when care is taken to size the tank to the maximumexpected flow rate.

BENEFITS: SERIES 1590 HALL SWITCHES

ORDERING DATA: SERIES 1590 SWITCHES

BENEFITS

■ Hall Effect Switches are suitable for use on most Tom Thumb/PHD products.

■ Liquid Resistant Switches can be used in applications wherecoolant or moisture due to washdown is present (IEC IP67rating). Consult PHD for compatibility with caustic orhazardous liquids.

■ Hall Effect Switches are solid state for long life and eliminationof contact bounce. Constant amplitude output is provided foruse with most digital logic systems.

■ Adjustable mounting allows switches to be located anywherewithin range of piston travel.

■ Several switches may be mounted to control or initiate anysequence function.

■ Suitable for use in plant environments where dirt andcontamination create difficulties for electromechanical andother types of controls.

■ LED indicator provides convenient means for positioning andtroubleshooting circuits.

■ Reverse Voltage Protection is built into these switches tosafeguard against switch failure due to reverse hookup.

The PHD Hall Effect Switch is a solid-state device designedspecifically to provide an input signal to various types ofprogrammable controllers or logic systems. Since the Hall EffectSwitch is solid-state, there are no moving parts to wear out.Because of this, the switch offers an infinite number of trouble-freeoperations. The Hall Effect Switch operates on DC current only, and isa dual output for either current sinking or a current sourcing input.

BENEFITS: SERIES 1590 REED SWITCHES

BENEFITS

■ Reed Switches are suitable for use on most Tom Thumb/PHDproducts.

■ Several switches may be mounted to control or initiate anysequence function.

■ Liquid Resistant Switches can be used in applications wherecoolant or moisture due to washdown is present (IEC IP67rating). Consult PHD for compatibility with caustic orhazardous liquids.

■ No externally moving parts to wear or maintain.

■ Suited for use in plant environments where dirt andcontamination create difficulties for electromechanical andother types of controls.

■ LED provides convenient means for positioning and trouble-shooting switch and circuits.

■ Standard Reed suitable for AC or DC service.

■ 3 Amp Switch provides internal transient protection undernormal conditions (AC only).

The PHD Reed Switch can be operated on either AC or DCcurrent. They are ideal for use as inputs for many types ofsequencers and programmable controllers. In some cases they canbe used to drive some relays or valve solenoids. However, electricaltransients (inrush currents or line spikes) associated with inductiveor capacitive loads can damage and shorten the life of the switch.PHD offers a 3 Amp Reed Switch (AC only) to be used for thesetypes of applications.

The 3 Amp Switch is very similar to the Reed Switch inconstruction. The difference is the inclusion of a triac whichupgrades the contact rating to 3 amps. The 3 Amp Switch also hasbuilt-in protection against electrical transients.
