DECEMBER 2012 District Governor’s Message. I trust that everyone enjoyed the District Convention as much as we did. Congratulations and thanks to the organizing committee, led by Chairman Lion Allan Maddocks, for an well run Convention. I think that all venues were excellent; in particular, the Chaffey Theatre proved to be a very suitable venue for the opening and business sessions. Thanks too to Morgan Lions for the Remembrance Ceremony. My congratulations to those Lions who were elected to various positions during the Convention: Rhys Roberts (District Governor and Secretary, Lions Medical Research Foundation), Ron Sargent ( 1 st Vice District Governor for 2013 – 2014, and 2 nd Vice District Governor for the remainder of 2012-2013) and Dave Thomas (2 nd Vice District Governor for 2013-2014). I’m sure that these Lions will provide the District with excellent leadership over the next few years. If the presentation is any guide, the 2014 District Convention in Beachport should be a lot of fun! It was our pleasure to attend the 50 th anniversary dinner of the Lions Club of Marion on Saturday October 20 th . It is certainly a great achievement to have served the community of Marion for 50 years. I believe that Marion is the second club in this District to reach this milestone, Broken Hill being the first. Among those attending was International 1 st Vice President Barry Palmer and Lion Anne. Earlier in the day, we were pleased to be able to take Barry and Anne to see the Bargain Centre run by the Lions Club of Blackwood. As well as re-presenting the Club Charter to President Hayden Hoad, I was honoured to be able to present a 50 year Monarch Chevron to Past District Governor Bob Korotcoff, a charter member of the club. More recently, during my annual visit to Marion Lions on November 27th, I was equally honoured to present a 50 year Monarch Chevron to Past International Director Bob Coulthard. Both these Lions have served our organization with distinction over 50 years. Another District club will be celebrating their 50 th anniversary during this Lions year. The Lions club of Mount Gambier will be having their 50 th anniversary dinner on Tuesday February 26 th ; information regarding this celebration should be available soon. Our visitations are progressing; thank you for the hospitality shown to us by all Lions that we have met so far. May you have an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Dear Club and District Leaders, Last month I reminded our leaders, especially our club officers, to get ready for Pit Stop #2 as we move ahead on our journey to create an even stronger association (click here for clubs and here for districts). The teamwork inherent in our pit stops will bring us to greater heights because we all have a special role to play to stay on course together. Well, how are we doing overall? I am happy to report that our membership has grown by 12,865, and we have a more than 284 net new clubs. That is 25,730 more hands to care for a child, to meet unmet humanitarian needs, to serve our communities -- whatever the world calls on us to do -- as we seek to ever expand "In A World of Service". Unfortunately needs are increasing all around us, and in all the communities we serve. Thankfully the Lions are there and rising to new challenges. I'm so pleased Lions are supporting our Reading Action Program (RAP) this year. In just the first quarter of this year, more than 21,000 literacy related projects have been reported. I am convinced our world of service knows no limits because I have seen so much passion and compassion from our Lions. No problem is too big to overcome. If there is a need, we just find the best way to address that need. So even as we celebrate the early success of RAP, I'm asking you to focus as well on our next Global Action Campaign - Relieving The Hunger in December and January. Hunger and food insecurity is a problem throughout the world. Lions are already making a positive impact, but we can do more. You are changing lives, and should be proud. I know I am...of you. Remember, service is one of the criteria for the Club Excellence Award. In 2010-11 we had more than 6,000 club leaders earn this prestigious award, and even more look to qualify. So I believe we are on the right course, and that this is the right map to follow -- the question is, can we qualify more in 2012-13? I know we can because I have seen your "dedication, preparation and teamwork" -- our winning formula -in action, building stronger clubs in the process. Of equal importance is the District Governor Team Excellence Award. This should be a goal of each and every district governor. I found this to be invaluable to my success when serving as a district governor in my home State of Indiana. But the road ahead will have its share of pot holes and challenges, like any journey does. I challenged the Lions to be 'agents of change' to make sure our clubs meet the needs of today's member, responding to a continuously evolving world. As our organization continues to evolve, it is important to share our story with new audiences. We did just that last month in Washington DC. Part of the success of our first Lions Day at the White House can be attributed to so many Lions and non-Lions following the event on our social media sites. Eleven Lions were recognized as 'Champions of Change' at this historic event, with thousands following along on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, the LCI and White House blogs, and live streaming video. I know you all join me in congratulating the 11 Lions recognized at his historic event. Our world is a world of service. Never doubt for a moment that you are making a significant contribution and improving the quality of life for millions of people. I wish you all the best until next month, and I hope our paths cross before then. But if not, know that I carry you with me in my thoughts during my travels, drawing upon that simple desire to serve, that brought me to Lions 28 years ago. Hopefully I am meeting your expectations. We are building a better today and tomorrow. Keep up the great work, and keep your engines finely tuned as we journey together in service. Sincerely,

Wayne A. Madden International President

The many items funded for a wide variety of projects show just how much your communities benefit from having an active Lions Club in their area. I have a quantity of brochures and other ALF material which I am only too happy to distribute to clubs and individual Lions on request. As always I am available to attend some Zone or club meetings as a guest speaker or to simply discuss any issues or answer any questions relating to the ALF, Grants, Awards, etc. If any club has not made a contribution to the ALF in the last year or so, may I suggest that you give consideration to doing so in the not too distant future. There is no need to wait until a disaster occurs before contributing. Remember, the ALF is “your” Foundation, please continue to support it and use it! Further ALF information can be downloaded from the ALF website. PDG David Savage ALF District Coordinator Australian Cranio-Maxillo Facial Foundation Dear Sir/Madam I pleased to advise that the Australian Cranio-Maxillo Facial Foundation would be pleased to supply speakers for any of your Club’s in South Australia. Lions have been wonderful supporters of Craniofacial for many years and we would be pleased to have either our Community Officer Bronwyn Chant or myself come and speak at any of your Club’s dinner meetings. Would you be kind enough to forward our offer on to your South Australian Head Office. Membership Recruiting Tips

Final instalment of:

50 Ways to Woo a Woman - Member that is ….. Double the Number of Women in your Lions club this year.

December 2012 47. Stay alert for interesting opportunities. Who says you can’t form a club branch that focuses on a particular activity, such as a group that sews for foster children, makes lap robes for the elderly or focuses around a group of women who love to hike or bike together. 48. Make a game of it. Divide members into teams for a game of “football,” with points for bringing in new members. Losers serve dinner to winners. 49. Have a contest to see whether the men or women in your club can bring in more women guests in a given time.

50. Have a twofer. Set up a special event (dinner, movie night, trip to theatre etc.) where every Lion who brings a woman guest gets in free. It’s good to have several women guests at one time to make them all feel more comfortable. (Next month, make your twofer for any Lion bringing a male guest. We don’t want to seem like we are playing favourites here.)

PR Matters

2012 District Convention Well yet another District Convention has been and gone. As we know the combined clubs of the Riverland hosted the 2012 Convention based at Renmark. Nearly 300 conventioneers attended and there could have been no complaint from anybody about

the weather we experienced, it was wonderful. Sadly for the organisers things got off to a less than spectacular start with the late withdrawal of the planned entertainment at the official opening on Friday evening. However this provided us with more opportunity for fellowship during which old friendships were rekindled and new friendships created. The business sessions on Saturday were all conducted in the Chaffey Theatre. This proved to be a very comfortable venue which was more than adequate for the task in hand. At times the program had to be adjusted “on the fly” to meet with prevailing circumstances but generally speaking everything moved along quite smoothly. The various elections took quite some time to count the votes but eventually Rhys Roberts was elected to the DG position for 2013/14. He will be supported by Ron Sergeant as 1st VDG and Dave Thomas as 2nd VDG Our guest speaker on Saturday was PDG Nigel Jeny who spoke of his role as LCIF Multiple Districts Coordinator. Members were reminded of the wonderful role Lions fulfil around the world particularly in emergency and disaster situations. Clubs were encouraged to make donations to LCIF and to make application for the appropriate LCIF grants. The Memorial service was held in Bert Dix Park on Sunday morning following a very nourishing BBQ breakfast. Club representatives collected some rose petals which they dropped from a wooden bridge into a small stream flowing through the park. In the course of the Convention members were treated to presentations from the Yankalilla Lions Club who will be hosting next years Convention at Wirrina Resort and the Beachport Rivoli Bay Lions Club with respect to the 2014 Convention. I’m sure we were all impressed with both presentations and should already be looking forward to attending at both. Speaking of Conventions members may be interested to know that at the first Convention held over 8,9 and 10th October 1917 delegates voted to open membership to women. The Convention voted to retain the Lions emblem, the head of a Lion holding a club in its mouth marked “International” and Convention also chose purple and gold as the Lions colours. Delegate W.J.Power from St Louis spoke in favour of changing the name of the organisation from Lions to Vortex. The motion to retain the Lions name was passed on a vote of 24 to 6 in favour and aren’t we all glad about that. (Click for convention photos)

Beachport Rivoli Bay Beachport to host 2014 Convention Beachport's secret weapon and member of the Beachport Lions club Ben Treloar (pictured) delivered the proposal that the Beachport-Rivoli Bay Lions club host the 2014 Lions District 201C2 convention. Ben a noted speaker, is also a member of the Wattle Range Council representing the Kintore ward, along with Cr. Slim Reilly. In true Treloar fashion Ben's speech mixed with a joke or two, highlighted the beautiful features of Beachport, as well as detailing the accomodation and facilities that Beachport has, to be able to host such a function. Ben's address was geeted with a huge round of applause and laughter at its conclusion, with the District Governor declaring that nobody would be game enough to speak against Beachport's motion. Seven members and their wives from the Beachport club ( the biggest contingent ever ) attended this years convention in the Riverland, and was hosted by a combined river towns effort. The convention held on the second, third and fourth of November of this year and in beautiful weather, was located in Renmark, who could boast such beautiful facilities such as the Chaffey theatre and the Renmark club. The Lions Convention includes an opening flag raising ceremony, with flags from many countries of the world being displayed, a business session and a remembrance ceremony where deceased lions are remembered. Interspersed throughout these functios are the various breakfasts, lunches and the District Banquet which was held at the beautiful riverside Renmark club, where at least two hundred people dined and danced the night away. Although Beachport Lions club knew that they were the only nomination to host the 2014 convention, it was still very important that they deliver a good case to the delegates at the convention, because being the only nomination is no guarantee that you will be successful. Following Millicent Lions clubs very successful convention last year and knowing that Beachport now had thirty two members who are very enthusiastic within the community, a Beachport Lion proposed that the club put forward a nomination. He was also encouraged by the Millicent Lions club and the Millicent Lioness club to have a go, and both of these clubs have offered their support. While the business of the District has to be addressed and there are the necessary office positions to be filled, Conventions offer a great opportunity to have some fun and meet other lions from all over the country and in particular this year delegates came from as far away as Darwin in the Northern Territory

Kingston Kingston on the Move

With a renewed President Steve Lomman and a new Secretary Claire Lomman both duly elected the Kingston Lions Club is back on track for a busy year ahead. This is probably the Clubs first husband and wife leadership team. Variety SA arranged for a Club photo shoot as their Trekker Support Group passed through town, to acknowledge our $1300 donation. A number of our members attended and met Kingston’s Variety Ambassador Stephanie Ratcliff and fellow Trekkers in front of Larry the Big Lobster. One Lion went to the wrong location so missed the shoot! This was our second donation and Variety are very appreciative. During October we held a sausage sizzle at Bawco Builders business opening by the Mayor. Busy selling raffle tickets for our Lions RSL Christmas Eve picnic in our Lions Park. Over several days in November the Club erected a safety fence around the Apex Park playground. Many helpers saw the task completed with a generous donation of concrete from a local supplier, and plant equipment from Lions members, the Club has spent more than $7,000 on this project

The Club is now preparing for our iconic Surf Fishing Contest in January 2013, and our long running Junior Jetty Competition to be held in early January. Our remaining Charter member Lion Kevin Starling has been unwell in Hospital in Adelaide so we all wish him well. Kevin is our hospital visitor locally so he knows the drill! We are busy with our Lions scholarship selection and planning for our Xmas catering led by Lion Wendy Drew.

Red Cliffs Lions sponsor VET awards At the recent MADEC VET in Schools Excellence awards night held in Mildura. Red Cliffs Lions sponsored 2 major awards as they have done for the past 2 years. The night recognises students who are involved in vocational and educational training through their local secondary college and local industry. The award presented by Lion Robert Wolfe went to Jordan Stephens for Vet Retail and Lion Max Carson presented the award to Liana Fuda for Applied Fashion Design. With approx 300 people in attendance the night was great PR for Lions with Merbein Lions club also sponsoring awards.

Willunga October Car Boot Sale

It was another beautiful sunny, later hot, Willunga day. We had our new banner on display at the corner of Binney and Main Roads. It looked spectacular and could be seen from a long way back up the road. A good number of stalls with many new ones. We were pleased that some of the first timers said they would be back so we are slowly building up a group of regulars. These stall holders have been taking flyers and handing them out at other markets. We will still need to do another flyer drop in supermarket car parks or markets so if you can take some flyers and put them out in your area, it would be a great help. The sausage sizzle had its biggest day to date. It was a hot day and got hotter before we closed so a

lot of that was cold drink sales. Rob and Wolf were kept busy on the BBQ all morning and won 2 new big hearts. One of the stall owners had 2 dogs, a Briard and a Golden retriever who loved the sausages.

Gambier City A Busy Lead Up To Christmas Gambier City Lions members have been involved in many activities in the lead up to the festive season. Activities include Bunnings BBQs (both running them and building them), Mount Gambier Christmas Pageant Party, Harness Racing Catering, PAWS (a doggie walk) Catering and the Legends of the Lake Hill Climb. Other activities still to come as well as additional Bunnings and Harness Racing activity before Christmas include, Red Cross Volunteer Christmas Spit and Blue Lake Carols. A busy and enjoyable Christmas Season to all Lions. Photographs show members involved in some of these activities.

Hallett Cove & Districts Lions International Peace Poster About 12 posters were entered from the Hallett Cove R-12 School and about 25 posters from the Sheidow Park School. Judging of the posters was carried out by our club’s Peace Poster coordinator, Lion Eunice Cox.

The winners were Leesha Bretzke from the Hallett Cove School (poster at right) and Joy Szyjko from the Sheidow Park School (poster left). The winning entries will now be entered into the Zone level judging. We wish both Leesha and Joy the best of luck with their posters in this next round. Many thanks to Lion Eunice for an excellent job of working with the relevant school coordinators.

McLaren Districts Overseas visitor

We received a visitor from a UK Lions Club at our work meeting on 7th November— Brian Smith from Scarborough, Yorkshire

Lions initiative a lifesaver As part of its ongoing commitment to the community the McLaren Vale & Districts War memorial hospital was pleased to host a free skin cancer screening clinic over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30.

The clinic was organised and administered by members of the McLaren Districts Lions Club and screenings were conducted by fully qualified skin cancer screeners Colin Beauchamps AM,JP and husband and wife team Christopher and Siva Lowings. Over the course of the weekend 163 members of the public were screened. Of these 65 were diagnosed as having serious suspect lesions which, broken down, amounted to 28 “at risk” and 37 “suspect life threatening” conditions. Immediate attention via GP and a specialist was recommended in all cases. Screenings were conducted via prearranged appointments following local advertising

but plenty of scope was allowed for “walk ins” as evidenced by the fact that nearly 50 extra screenings were conducted over and above appointments. Over the weekend, those involved in this Lions project have potentially

saved 65 lives as a result of the early detections. Who knows what might have been had these lesions not been detected? Efforts are being made within Lions by groups and individuals in South Australia in an effort to establish the availability of this type of clinic on a more regular basis. A club spokesperson thanked all at the hospital who assisted in the organisation of the clinic in any way, the screeners and Lions Club volunteers and “to everybody else involved for a job well done”.

GOOD JOB: Screeners Colin Beauchamp, AM. JP and Christopher and Siva Lowings along with Lions Health Projects Chairperson Marilyn Millar.
