- School funding for Asia Literacy Programs - Teacher Education Visitation programs - Graduate Certificate in Teaching Asia through ANU

Why Asia?...

Globally the Asian region is of great significance. Asia includes:

• 60% of the world’s population and 30% of world land mass• the world’s two most populous nations, China and India• some of the most dynamic civilisations of all time• a great diversity of belief systems including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity, and Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country• the world’s second largest economy, Japan, and the two fastest growing major economies, China and India.

Asia – Cross curriculum

“By 2020 the aim is to have 12% of students leaving school with fluency in one of 4 Asian languages (Mandarin, Korean, Indonesian, Japanese) focused on by the NASSLP program to allow these students to actively

engage in trade and/or commerce studies in University.”

• Asia Literacy is not just about being able to speak an Asian Language. It is about engaging in the culture by developing a cultural understanding.

• The National Curriculum incorporates 3 cross curriculum priorities –

1. Sustainability2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures3. Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia

Options for History

National Curriculum options – • Stage 4 options India, China, Angkor/Khmer Empire, Japan under the Shoguns, The Mongol Expansion

• Stage 5 options Asia and the world, Making a nation – Chinese settlement in Australia, Movement of People – Asia to Australia, World War II, Vietnam War and Migration experiences

• Making connections throughout the content to other cultures or situations – e.g Ema activity
