    Action:

    To walk the perimeter of the square until you return to the

    same point from which you departed.

    A couple o months ago I was invited to intervene in apublic space in the city o Utrecht under the curatorial con-cept o Collective Individualism Collective Individualism- Interventions In and Through the Public Space. The placeselected to be intervened was the Jaarbeursplein. Thisspace is located at the exit o the citys main train station,Utrecht Central. The Jaarbeursplein is an unpleasant place.It is a square without a unction other than to be crossed.It can be called a non-place, one o those spaces that canbe ound anywhere in the world and share the quality obeing there, almost unnoticed; aggressive, but at the sametime part o our everyday lives. I would like to suspendthat situation and or a moment transorm the space into

    a mental place that can be possessed by walking with nospecic reason.During the same weeks that I received the invitation, Icame upon a story about a Russian artist named FransiscoInante. During the 60s he made a perormance calledDedication(Posvyashchenie). He drew Malevichs Black

    the snow. Malevich used the Back Square as a personalsymbol o non-objectivity, as a way o escaping: theworld of will and idea. He used the Black Square as away to express a deeper connection to eeling, to human

    nature, and I would contend, to personal imaginationand independence. Non- objectivity is an attempt notto think o any actual object, gure or scene, but o aeeling.The idea behind Incomplete Homage is to re-enact theperormance made by Fransisco Inante o Malevichs

    Black Square. Since all cities may possess places withthe same characteristics as the Jaarbeuysplein, I wouldlike to repeat Inantes action and multiply it to dierentlocations around the world.

    Here is where I ask or your collaboration. I would likeyou to look or a square in your city o residence that

    resembles Jaarbeuysplein. Then, choose a day and walkthe squares perimeter until you return to the samepoint rom which you departed. An action that holdsno apparent result except or the person that executes it.

    By re-enacting the perormance, we bring into lie anaction or idea that was already in history and we make

    it alive again. We also travel in time while questioning ourpresent and inscribing our personal experiences in othernarratives, constructing rom the repeated action o dier-ent people rom around the world, a sort omemorial o memories: a network o memories.

    I can imagine these men 40 years ago, walking in thesnow while thinking about the Black Square, itsel createdalmost a 100 years in the past. They opened a path andlet a trace while creating an imaginary place. For a briemoment nature and concept became one. The snow kept

    alling and the traces were erased. In our case the city willcontinue, as well as the people.

    For me, Mong Kok is the place where the most extremecontradictions in Hong Kong happen. It is the most popu-

    lated neighborhood in the HKSAR and probably one othe most populated neighborhoods in the world. There,

    apparently one o the most local and characteristic places,everybody gets absorbed by the crowd; everybody is doing

    their own thing, but being in the crowd, all o us looseour identity. When I was taking the pictures, nobody even

    stared at me, and being a place packed with jewelry storesin some o its sides, it seemed odd that nobody questioned

    the reason why I was taking the pictures, and writing co-

    ordinates o the places at which I stopped. People bumpedinto me as i I was a doll, sometimes they would move meout o the way and when they did they didnt even turn

    around. Chinese believe in a common well-being, being incontrol is o the highest importance, but then, they acted

    violently against somebody stepping in their way.From the moment that you step into this place, you eel

    and extreme rush, all the lights, regardless o it being lateat night, keep people awake. In some other neighbor-

    hoods o Hong Kong it also happens: people that adminis-ter the shops want to give the crowd this daylight eeling,and the light gets trapped by the buildings, so it eels like

    another reality, you dont eel time passing by.This neighborhood is one o the biggest shopping areas inHong Kong, people go there ater working nonstop, and

    they just consume. And even though it has many localplaces, where the sell Chinese medicine, typical oods,and have one o the best independent cinemas, thereswhere I nd the contradiction, which has been present

    in China, and mostly in Hong Kong, being one o therichest places in the world. Chinese people and otheroreigners as me come here, looking or a better uture,but while we do so, many o our values, traditions andbelies hide in this consumer environment. It is com-mon, that Chinese girls, being raised in highly tradi-tional households, come here and get detached rom

    how they were raised. They dress in a way that wouldbe not accepted and would even be really dangerous inother parts o the world, I wonder i they dress like thatin ront o their parents, and keep on acting the sameway that they do here when they are at home. Many othem, as part o seeking a better uture want to haverelationships with oreigners, but in the long run, theyare giving up their identities just or somebody to paytheir bills, LV bags and whatever they can think o. Ina macroscopic view o the neighborhood, the contra-diction is also really strong; all the Chinese places geteaten up in the light o western shops, with westernmodels in the advertisements and western music play-ing on the speakers. Randomly, you see people in thestreet playing Chinese music and asking or money, but

    10 meters away you wont even be able to hear whatthey are singing.

    When I was walking around the square, being with peopleall around me, I elt really lonely. I elt a deep nostalgia o myhome, the scents and sounds o my city; I missed the people

    that I loved. I elt lost, because o walking alone without adenite purpose, or looking or something specic, it just

    seemed as a void space. All the sounds get conused, by allthe people in the streets advertising products, millions oconversations (in two dierent languages that I wouldntunderstand, even i I tried to) and the roaring sounds o

    the buses going across the roads. The scents o the localoods and medicines get neutral because o all the passersby

    swinging the air around, but theres no such thing as windcoming through. Its an ephemeral place, all that happensthere every day changes, the people that cross it, and the

    products that they sell, the songs that they sing on thestreet. In a ew hours it all disappears and gets born again.

    Temporary.

    This square has or ages now a temporary unction in ourcity. To park your bike or car or a estival, a village air,

    decorated it with grati, to walk your dog or to do a edgyphoto shoot. The seasons get grip on the square.

    Ironically, they are talking or about 10 years now to makethis square the new cultural centre o the city. As you see

    they are still talking. In the meantime they build everything

    around it and leave this space still open.

    Temporary it will be.

    Llegamos a la plaza a eso de las cuatro de la tarde, nosdetuvimos en un externo, all empec a tomar las otos y

    decid que de acuerdo al carcter experimental de la tareaiba a tomar mas de cuatro otos, y as poder decidir....

    Floripa es una isla muy grande, con poca gente, y casi no

    hay lugares que sean pasos obligados.Santo Antonio, es un paso obligado para el turista, que nose puede ir de Floripa sin pasar una tarde o una noche all,

    tambin lo es para una buena parte de los habitantes delnorte de la isla, y su plaza es el centro de todo, todas las

    calles conducen all, o por lo menos eso parece. Con vistaal mar, con arenera y zona para nios, rodeada del puesto

    de salud, la polica, la iglesia, y el cementerio; la plazarealmente es el punto de encuentro. Viejitos, pescadores,residentes, nios, turistas, hippies, surstas, comedores deostras e incluso modelos visitan la plaza (intente hacer depaparazi pero racase rampantemente y solo se ven unascuantas cabezas de la sesin de otos que me tope en el

    atrio de la iglesia que data de 1700 y tantos. Tomo otos,camino, recorro la plaza, intento desde varios ngulos

    retener la imagen del cementerio pero de nuevo racaso,no se entiende, parecen casi unas manchas de colores, las

    fores a la distancia.Cae la tarde, el sol baja, el viento es poco, termino mi

    recorrido y regreso al punto de inicio donde estn espern-dome los dos amores de mi vida.

    del Libertador hace unas cuatro dcadas, cuando el parquese conoca como de la independencia, precisamente,

    porque representaba los 150 aos de la Independenciade la Repblica de Colombia. Nos circundan el ro, La

    Academia colombiana de la Lengua, el Centro ColomboAmericano y la Alianza Colombo Francesa. Aparte de laestatua del Libertador, no hay nada que haga pensar enla palabra libertad. Los vendedores de minutos ahora

    caminan oreciendo yerba, las motos de la polica pasan

    Im with T in the Parque de los Periodistas . We are sit-ting by the Libertadors bandstand, which was placed hereour decades ago when the park was still know as parquede la independencia , precisely because it represented the150 year o independence o the Colombian Republic. We

    are surrounded by the cold, the Academia Colombian de laLengua, the Centro Colombo Americano and the AlianzaColombo Francesa. Besides the statue o El Libertador,

    there is nothing at all that could make you think o liberty.The street salesmen that used to sell phone credit by theminute now walk the streets dealing pot and the policemotorcycles leave a trace that embellishes the streets. A

    homeless woman tosses crumbs to the ground and several

    The square in located between Broadway and AmsterdamAvenue, between 72nd and 73rd Streets. It is not only a

    square with seating, but also an exit to a main subway sta-tion, the 72nd Street stop or the numbers 1,2 and 3

    trains and a crossing between the streets and avenues. AsI walked the perimeter o the square, I was acutely aware

    o the chaos surrounding the square. There were taxicabs, buses, cars, bicycles, all passing around

    the square and the noise level and speed level o these ve-hicles was extremely load and ast. Yet, inside the square,

    there was a sense o tranquility. People sat on benches

    and talked, read, ate their lunch; they could be seen laugh-ing, smiling and even crying. Some in their own littleworld, talking to themselves or on a phone, while others

    interested with another person. Yet, they all were seeming-ly unaware o the world outside. There was peace, peace

    in the middle o chaos. Once I let the perimeter othe square and walked across the street, I was no longer inthat world o tranquility, nor could I see it or experience it.

    I was once back again in the chaotic and noisy world.

    Next door to my apartment, there is square,It is a square I have past many times.

    The square has a triangular shape and nds itsel in be-tween 2 roads that orm one a bit earlier on.

    This piece o useless ground was probably turned intoa square to brighten the place up it up,.. it has a small

    enced playground and some benches.

    Yet people seem to think o it as I do,.. just a piece onland, its tools not used or what they were intended or.

    The playground looks a bit neglected and the benches arenormally unoccupied, besides the occasional local bum,..

    or some lonely looking geriatric.Neighbors o the square dump there trash on the corners.

    I walk the parameters.First thinking o the historical background

    this project is based on.I think it is unny I am walking around this useless square,

    taking some photos o it, as i it is such an amazing place.I have lived right next to it or 2 years now, yet I eel likean outsider to the people that walk next to me on the

    sidewalk..I think they must think o me as a tourist who has no ideawhat is an actual interesting place to shoot in thsi big city

    o Buenos Aires,.. I look like a oreignert and I must bewith my big camera, shooting a square o such little beauty

    I continue and suddenly start to eel good about mysel.Ha, I eel like I am givng importance to this place byregistering it,.. paying attention to its construction, itscolors, its shape.I SEE this square, and because i see it, it is.

    I start to see more now, this square has a beautiulname, I never saw it beore,.. it is written on a nicesign, it is the place where the local bum now sits todo some sleeping, it creates space or the trees thatgrow on the sides o the aligning roads to hang therebranches.It is.

    Though I never really saw it.I eel like I want to start cleaning it up now though.It deserves to be seen by others.Perhaps I am making it too personal now, haha i dontknow but I also eel a little sad.I would not have noticed this place i I wasnt asked todo this assignment....Am I starting to get blind or the little things,.. orthings that also matter?     Ik laat mijn blik dwalen over het lege plein. Een stap.Nog een stap. Tijd om een oto te nemen. Weer twee

    stappen verder hoor ik achter mij een stem: Jij hebt

    toch geen oto van mij? Ik draai mij om en kijk recht inhet onverzorgde gezicht van een medestadsgenoot. uh,nee, van het plein zeg ik iewat benepen. Hij kijkt me

    aan en zegt: Er loopt hier een oude man rond die otosvan mij maakt en daar houd ik niet van Ik probeer hemuit te leggen waarom ik op zondagavond om een groot

    verlaten marktplein heen loop maar na de tweede zinraak ik hem kwijt. Hij kijkt mij aan, lacht en zucht: oh,

    een student. Dit lijkt alles te verklaren en hij springt weerop zijn ets en rijdt weg.

    Ik vervolg mijn rondje om het plein en probeer me teocussen op het moment, de leegte en mijn gedachten.

    Na een aantal passen struikel ik over de uitgestrektebenen van een meisje. Ze zit samen met haar vriendin opeen muurtje. In haar hand heet ze een gigantische toren

    van ijs en slagroom. Sorry moppel ik en loop door. Ditplein lijkt toch minder verlaten dan ik dacht. Ik stop omeen oto te nemen en moet onmiddellijk wegduiken om

    te voorkomen dat een dui tegen mijn hood vliegt. Dezerelatie makkelijke opdracht om een rondje langs eenplein te lopen verloopt toch moeizamer dan ik dacht.

    Ik loop verder naar een aantal glazen hokken. Ik draai mijom want ik wil een oto van het plein maken. Het ligt

    ligt als een stenen zee voor mij. Totaal verlaten. Alsoiedereen die het waagt er een voet op te zetten me-teen opgeslokt wordt. Ik maak een oto en draai weerterug. Een vietnamese amilie staart mij aan. Vader,moeder, dochter en oma. Ze zijn uit een van deglazen hokken gekomen. Blijkbaar is dat hun tokoen zijn ze klaar voor vandaag. Nu valt me op dat deandere glazen hokken ook winkels zijn. Te herkennenaan de emblemen op het glas. Een vis voor de viswinkelen een roos voor de bloemenzaak. Waarom hebbenvietnamezen dan geen loempia op hun hokje?O een chopstick?

    Zonder verdere problemen bereik ik het eindpunt obeginpunt. Ik neem een oto. Pas nu valt mij op datniemand het plein oversteekt. Die paar mensen die hierzijn lopen ogenschijnlijk ondoordacht langs de randenvan het plein. Dit is het plein midden in het centrum.Ontworpen en gebouwd voor de mensen die hierwonen en niemand die er gebruik van durt te maken.

    I let my eyes linger on the big, empty square. One step.Another step. Time to take a picture. Another two steps.I hear a voice behind me: Did you take a picture o me,

    did you? I turn around and look into the unkept ace o aellow citicen. uh, not really, o the square I utter rather

    conused. He looks at me and continues: There is anold man around here who takes photographs, I dont likethat. I try to explain why I walk around an empty squareon a sunday night but ater two sentences I seem to have

    lost him.He looks at me, smiles, and sighs: Ah, youre astudent. This seems to explain everything and he jumps

    on his bike and cycles away.I continue my walk around the square and try to ocus

    my attention on this moment, the emptiness and mythoughts. Then I trip over the rather beautiul legs o a

    girl. She sits on a ridge with a riend and her hands graspa gigantic icecream. I am sorry I mumble and walk on.

    There are more peple around this square then I thoughtthere would be. I turn around and try to take a photograph

    o the square. Through my lens I see a pigeon ast approach-

    ing. I dive and the pigeon just misses my head. This littleproject might be more complex then I originally thought.I walk towards a couple o glass cubicles. I turn and take

    a photograph o the desolate square. It lies beore me likea sea o stones, threatening to drown anyone that dares

    to enter. I take the picture and turn back.

    An entire vietnamese amily silently stares at me. Father,mother, daughter and grandma. Theyve just comeout o the cubicle. Apperently its their asian take awayand they have nished or the day. Only now I realise

    that these cubicles are shops. You can regognise themat the emblems painted on the cubicles. A sh or theshshop. A rose or the forist. Why doesnt the asiantake away have an emblem, I wonder. Why not a sprin-grol or chopsticks.Without urther complcations I reach the end o thesquare, Or the beginning. I take another photograph.Suddenly I notice that there are people walking around

    the square but none o them actually crosses it.This isreally rather bizar. This square, right in the middle o thecity centre, is designed and build or the people o thiscity and no one uses it.

    Ik heb dit plein gekozen om in relatie met de tekst van hetliedje Qui Fuera (Wie zou dat zijn) een vergelijkbare ge-voel te geven van leegte en onbegrip. Quin Fuera gaatover de onmacht van een open hart dat een gesloten hart

    niet kan bereiken. Het gaat om de gevoelens voor eenander die niet dezelde codes gebruikt en de astand dieonvermijdelijk tussen deze twee kan bestaan. Zel, heb ik

    het gevoel dat ik met zon plein dat gevoel van astanden onbereikbaarheid ook heb, praktisch ingericht en alsachtergrond een opstapeling van autos (machines) bin-

    nen een grijze doos van beton gemaakt, door mensen entegelijkertijd zo onmenselijk. Mijn dialoog met dit plein is

    rationeel en niet hartelijk.

    for one another that have different codes used, and thedistance between these two can inevitably exist. Itself,I feel like I do with such square sense of distance andinaccessibility but also practically equipped and with abackground of accumulation of cars (machines), withina gray box of concrete made by people and yet soinhumane.
