In this guide we provide you with all necessary information re-garding your studies as exchange student at the Faculty of Busi-ness, Economics and Statistics. We off er study programmes in the fi elds of Business Administration, International Business Administration, Economics and Statistics.

Th is guide contains specifi c information on our faculty and the registration procedures.

In addtion, we strongly recommend you to visit the website of the central International Offi ce of the University of Vienna once you have been nominated as an exchange student by your home university.

It is very important for you to fi nd out about the contents, aims and required prior knowledge for the courses you wish to attend and to check in advance with your home coordinator or super-visor which courses you can or should take.

Courses at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics usually start in the fi rst week of October/March. You have to be present in the fi rst session, otherwise you will lose your place in the course! If you cannot attend due to serious reasons please send an e-mail to the respective teacher or secretary.

Some courses are “block courses” and their fi nal exam may be at an earlier date. Please check the details either when registering for the courses or in the fi rst lesson!

Notice that you will need time to settle in Vienna, therefore we advise you to arrive a couple of days before the Welcome Meeting.

5Language Requirements

We recommend that students who wish to follow courses off ered in German should have a advaced profi -ciency in German, at least at level B2/2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Th e same standard will apply to students who wish to follow courses taught in English: your level of English should at least be at B2/2.

German Language Courses

Th e Language Center (Sprachenzentrum) of the University of Vienna off ers German language courses for each language level, before and dur-ing each semester. Students who wish to attend a course have to take a placement test in order to make sure that they will receive the adequate train-ing according to their language skills.

CoursesExchange students are allowed to register for all courses off ered at Bachelor and Master level. Bachelor stu-dents who would like to attend a class at Master level have to ensure that they have the required prior knowl-edge. If you are uncertain whether you fulfi l the necessary prerequistes, please contact the course organiser.

General course information

Th ere are two types of courses at the University of Vienna:

- Courses with continuous assessment of course work (prüfungsimmanent)• Course attendance is compulsory• Th ere is oft en no fi nal exam but all partial performances will be counted for the fi nal mark• To attend this course you have to register via u:space/u:fi nd

- Courses without continuous assessment of course work (nicht-prüfungsimmanent)• Usually lectures (Vorlesungen, short VO)• Attendance is not compulsory• Th ere is one fi nal exam• You do not have to register to attend the course, but you still may want to register for access to e-learning

resources.• You have to register for the fi nal exam via u:space/u:fi nd

In general, courses take place once a week at the same place and time. Th ere are, however, also ‘block courses’ with irregular and condensed times. When choosing these courses, please be aware of the fact that they may collide with your other, regular courses.

Course types

FK: Advanced university courses Th e corresponding introductory university courses should have been completed.

VK: In-depth university courses Deepening university courses build on the contents of either introductory or advanced uni-versity courses and should be attended only aft er their comple-tion.

SE: Seminars Exchange students that wish to take a seminar should carefully check the pre-required knowl-edge. In in doubt, contact the course instructor in advance. German skills may be necessary for group works and presenta-tions.

WIKO: Wirtschaft skommunika-tion (Business Communication) Courses can only be attended, if the language of instruction is not the mother tongue. Your lan-guage skills schould be at least level B2 according to the CEFR.

STEOP: Introduction and Ori-entation PhaseExchange students should not take STEOP Courses. At the end of the STEOP there is only one fi nal exam that covers the con-tent of all STEOP Courses.

UK: University courses Please check the online course catalogue (u:fi nd) for the prerequisites of each class.

EK/VO: Introductory univer-sity courses and LecturesPlease check the online course catalogue (u:fi nd) for the prerequisites of each class.

VK Business GermanTh is is a special course in-tended for non-native speak-ers of German. To follow this course you must already have a good knowledge of German (at least B1 according to CEFR). It is not a beginners course!

You can attend introductory language courses at the uni-versity’s Language Center.

4.08 Complementary Study Programmes (Extension Curricula)Th ese are courses which are off ered by the faculty for students coming from other study fi elds (highly recommended for exchange students!).

How to plan your course schedule

1. Choose the courses you would like to take from the online course catalogue. All classes off ered by our faculty start with 04xxxx.If you are looking for classes taught in English: Th e language of instruction is indicated in the course catalogue.

2. Please make sure to select courses which cor-respond to your level of subject knowledge.

3. Please select more courses than you actually need in case you will not be accepted in a cer-tain course! Exchange students are not priori-tised in the course registration process.

4. Organise a weekly schedule for the semester as soon as possible, as you need to know if there are any time clashes before you register.

5. Register for courses via u:space or u:fi nd within the online registration period. Follow the in-structions on page 17 (or the video tutorial on our website).Please note: registration within the registra-tion period is only mandatory for courses with compulsory attendance (see p. 8). Registration for lectures is open all semester.

6. You will be informed whether you are accepted in your desired classes aft er the end of the regis-tration period.

Th e registration system provides you with 1,000 points at the beginning of each semester. Th e more points you set, the higher the chance that you will be accepted in the course. Registration statusTh ere are fi ve types of status:

• angemeldet (“accepted”)Only this status means that you are accepted in the course.

• abgemeldet (“de-registered”)You were de-registered from the class. If you have not done this yourself, you should receive an e-mail with an explanation why this was done. If not, please contact the International Support.

• vorgemerkt (“pre-registered”)Usual status aft er registration. Wait until the registration period is over, your statusand go to the fi rst ses-sion of the course. You will then be accepted if there are enough places left .

• auf Warteliste (“on waiting list”)You will be accepted for the course if other students quit.

• angelegt Please contact [email protected], something went wrong during the registration process.

Once the registration period ends the students will then be listed according to their given points, with the fi rst getting a place within the desired course until the course is full.

What to do if you did not manage to get a place in a desired course? • if you are on the waiting list and you can still see places available on u:space, please contact the administra- tive assistant of the department who off ers the course• if you are on the waiting list and no places are shown as vacant: go to the fi rst session and ask the lecturer if you can still participate• check on u:space whether there are courses still open for registration

De-registrationDon’t forget to cancel courses you are not going to take until the de-registration deadline (usually mid Octo-ber/March) - otherwise you will receive a negative grade for this class.For de-registering, go to the registration system on u:space and click on the button “abmelden” in the col-umn “Status ändern” next to the course from which you want to de-register.Be careful not to de-register from the wrong course. Once you are de-registered you cannot re-register!

Th is means that the tran-script is valid without any handwritten signature and stamp. What is the best time to arrive in Vienna?Each semester we organise a Welcome Meeting for our incoming exchange students. Attendance of the meeting is compulsory! (Mid February/ Septem-ber - exact date and time will be announced on our website and in this guide.)

When do the lectures start?Winter term: 1st OctoberSummer term: 1st MarchObviously, weekends are taken into consideration.

Which level of language skills requires the Faculty of Business Economics and Statistics?To be able to follow courses taught in English or German you should have at least the level B2 ac-cording to the CEFR.

How can I fi nd courses in English?Please check the language of instruction of the courses in the online course catalogue. It is indi-cated in the course information as well as in the overview of courses for each study programme (marked ‘en’)

How can I register for courses?Registration has to be done online. Please follow the instructions on page 14.

Am I allowed to take all courses off ered on Bach-elor and Master level, even if I am a BA student?Th eoretically yes, but you have to make sure that you fulfi l pre-requisites especially for seminars and Master courses. If you are uncertain, contact the course instructor in advance!

Am I allowed to take Business Communication courses in my mother tongue?No, no excuses are made here. You will be expelled by the lecturer.

Am I allowed to take STEOP courses?Not really. Th ese lectures are for fi rst semester stu-dents and therefore well above your level.

Who has to sign my Learning Agreement?You can get your Learning Agreement signed at the International Support . Please fi nd the opening

hours on our website.

What should I do if I did not manage to get into a course I want to take?Please contact the course instructor or go to the fi rst session of the course. Explaining your situation as an exchange student may help, but lecturers are not required to treat you preferentially.

How can I change courses?Aft er the end of the registration period it is pretty hard to change courses. Th e only way to get into a course you did not register for is to contact the course instructor.

Where can I take a German language course?German language courses of diff erent levels are off ered at the Language Center: https://sprachen-zentrum.univie.ac.at/en/german-courses/ Th ose are not free of charge but as an exchange student you will get a special discount on most courses. Please be aware that the courses will not appear in your Transcript of Records, but you will get a Certifi cate.

When will the exams take place?Th ere is one general exam week at the end of the semester: 25th – 30th January / 20th – 25th June. Be aware that exams may also take place outside of this period.

Do I have to register for exams?Yes, for courses without continuous assessment of work. Registration has to be done via u:space.

Do I have to attend each class?Attendance is compulsory for courses with continu-ous assessment of work (‘prüfungsimmanent’). In case of illness you should present a medical confi r-mation. Attendance of lectures (‘VO’) is not manda-tory.

Where can I get my Confi rmation of Departure/Stay?At the International Support.

How can I get my transcript of records?You can print your Transcript of Records online via u:space. Please, follow the instructions on page 19.
