IBM i SWMA and Service Extension Notes
20
With active base SWMA (where “base SWMA” is the standard SWMA you acquire via either
AAS or ServiceSuite (/ServiceElite) and does NOT include Service Extension) you are eligible
for…▪ version-to-version or release-to-release upgrades.
▪ the IBM i Processor and User Transfer offering, where on the donor machine, active SWMA is required on all IBM
i entitlements to be transferred. (Specifically, active SWMA is required in order to transfer the IBM i operating
system processor/user entitlements. Active SWMA is not required in order to transfer IBM i optional features (like
Media & Storage Extensions) and LPPs for i within an enterprise.)
▪ acquiring PTFs at your current release. PTFs can be downloaded from FixCentral when SWMA is active, even
after the effective end-of-service date has been reached for a release.
▪ Technical Assistance via telephone or electronically. Note that once the effective end-of-service date is reached
for a release, an Extended Support Offering is required in order to get technical assistance from IBM.
▪ acquiring previous-release keys. E.g. you are entitled for IBM i 7.2 and have active base SWMA. You can get
any previous-release keys for IBM i. The keys will be available on the Entitled System Support (ESS) portal or by
contacting [email protected].
▪ ordering Extended Support Offerings, if available, for a release after effective end-of-service date. I.e., active
SWMA is a prerequisite for ordering Extended Support Offerings. The 7.1 Service Extension is announced
November 14, 2017.
Refer to chart 10 for a table for IBM i 7.2: examples of which actions require active SWMA vs. active SWMA
+ Service Extension
For further information on the terms for SWMA, refer to the International Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance at http://www-
03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf/sla/iaasm/. Refer to other agreements that apply to your support coverage, for example, a ServiceElite
contract.

Q: How can I get the pricing for 7.1 Extended Service Offering?
A: Contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. IBM reps and BPs can engage a
IBM Technical Support Sales (TSS) representative. For BPs who do not know the IBM TSS sales
contact, ask your distributor.
➢ For U.S. pricing, IBM reps and BPs can email [email protected] or call 888-426-4343
Q: If I need 7.1 Extended Service for both IBM i and PowerHA, which have separate SWMA,
do I pay Extended Service fee for both?
A: Yes, there are separate fees for the Extended Service offerings when the products have
separate SWMA, as is the case with IBM i and PowerHA.
Q: Do I pay an additional fee for 7.1 Extended Service for LPPs and IBM i optional features
which are covered under IBM i Group SWMA?
A: No. I.e., when acquiring 7.1 Extended Service for IBM i, all LPPs and optional features which
are covered under IBM i Group SWMA are covered under the Extended Service Offering, with the
exception of any extended service product restrictions.
IBM i SWMA and Service Extension Notes, continued
22
Q: Can I order the 7.1 Extended Service Offering through iERP/AAS?
A: No. Extended Service Offerings are ordered via IBM Technical Support Services and not via
iERP/AAS.
Q: Why would an IBM i 5.4 or 6.1 or 7.1 client keep base SWMA active after effective end-
of-service or after the Service Extension has ended?
A: With active base SWMA, clients are eligible for the following, even after the effective end-of-
service date has been reached or the Service Extension has ended for a release:
• Version-to-version or release-to-release upgrades.
• If cost effective: for the IBM i Processor and User Transfer offering, where on the donor
machine, active SWMA is required on all IBM i entitlements to be transferred. (Specifically,
active SWMA is required in order to transfer the IBM i operating system processor/user
entitlements. Active SWMA is not required in order to transfer IBM i optional features (like
Media & Storage Extensions) and LPPs for i within an enterprise.)
• Acquiring PTFs at the current release. PTFs can be downloaded from FixCentral when
SWMA is active, even after the effective end-of-service date has been reached for a release.
IBM i SWMA and Service Extension Notes, continued
23
Q: How do I get software keys for earlier releases?
A: A client with active base SWMA can get IBM i and LPP keys for their entitled release and
any previous release keys. If the keys are not showing as available on the Entitled System Support (ESS) portal, then contact the Key Center at [email protected].
Only base SWMA is required in order to get previous-release keys. For IBM i releases under
Service Extension, Service Extension is not required in order to get previous-release keys.
