Fraternally Yours,

Vaughn Schmall, Exalted Ruler

MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER

A t the end of

this year, I

can look back on

some wonderful

times.

I think of the

event we held for

Don and Jo Wil-

son. How often in

a life do you have

the chance to tell someone you love just

how much you love them before they go?

We have spent this year realizing just

how much of an empty spot has been left

by his passing.

Our lodge grew to count on this gener-

ous man's hard work on behalf of our Vet-

erans, Youth, and Lodge. The Exalted

Rulers of the last decade did not realize

how easy they had it, with PER Don Wil-

son handling so many of these things.

AA s we look forward, we, the members

of Lodge 823, need to step in to fill

those spots with an open attitude and

mind. Events will not be the same as they

were in the past, but our community and

membership need these programs.

This year for the Food Boxes, Leading

Knight Elaine Paulson and a team of vol-

unteers rose admirably to the task of gath-

ering, purchasing, and fund raising to

make sure this program would not end

with Don.

Please reach out if there is a program

that you felt was important. Be part of our

future, not one mourning the loss, not one

saying "THEY" should, or remember

when "THEY" did. When we become

members of this organization we must

realize and remember that the "THEY" is

us.

We, as members, are responsible for the

programs, building, and continuation of

our lodge.

II am extremely proud of the funds we

have raised for both ENF and Chil-

drens Therapy this year. Please keep in

mind that there is always a need to fund

for our own Youth Activities programs.

Come May, there will be a list of teams,

scout troops, and nonprofit organizations

that will be contacting the Lodge, request-

ing funds like they received in the past.

As a Lodge, we need to ensure that those

programs continue. Or, sadly accept the fact

that they will simply pass away, like the

man that sponsored them for so many years.

II n the coming years, unlike those of the

past decade, we as members will need to

step into leadership and committee chairper-

son roles. Please don't let this burden fall on

the officers alone. A successful lodge is

filled with volunteers.

As I write this, we face a very serious per-

sonal challenge in our own family. As the

future and health of those you love most is

brought home to you, it causes you to

reevaluate the level of importance of things

in your life.

To resolve to remove the negativity and

wasted energy that so often clutters our

lives.

I have been overwhelmed by the outpour-

ing of love and good wishes from the mem-

bers of our Elk family.

FF inally, a very wise Elk placed a plaque

above our front door that I would en-

courage all of you to read and meditate upon

this month. "The faults of our members we

write upon the Sand." Each of us has taken

an oath, an Obligation, of how we will con-

duct ourselves.

Every year we try tirelessly to secure new

members and bring them into our lodges as

Elks, but how do we keep them? If we, un-

like our Motto demands, write the faults of

our members in our continued conversations

and in the gossip between our friends, how

will a house divided stand?

This year saw many unpopular decisions;

in each, there were multiple sides of the

conversation. Rather than continuing to

bring every fault, every failure, every single

decision we agree with, why don't we try

being Elks - and only write upon the Tablets

of Love and Memory - our brothers and sis-

ters Virtues.

II have appreciated and enjoyed being the

Exalted Ruler of one of the best lodges in

the State of Washington.

I wish all of you all the happiness and

brotherly love in all the years to come.

Elks of the Month March 2015

AA n individual member is normally selected as the Elk of

the Month, along with the privilege of the reserved

parking spot. Since these two always ride and work together,

naming both as Elk of the Month seemed appropriate.

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a number of

couples come into our lodge, and together, become an integral

part of our lodge. When Patricia and Glenn Hanning first

joined the lodge, we had a great need for assistance and work

efforts on our grounds.

These two, with the help of their family members, jumped

right in and made an amazing difference around our proper-

ty. With the annual southern migration of our normal grounds

czar, Hank Beaudoin, plus the injury of Big Dave

Mersereau, our lawns would have been completely out of

control.

Thank You again to two such dedicated and wonderful new

members. Fraternally Yours, Vaughn Schmall, Exalted Ruler

PP ER Parking . . .

Yup. I’ve think I’ve

figured it out. I think I

know why we still do not

have, nor, apparently, any

plan to create, a reserved spot for the Presi-

dent of the PER Association.

Simple. I have just not agitated enough.

What else could it be?

Kind of weird to fail at being a pain in

the association, when you expect it to just

come naturally.

Just have to try harder, I guess.

HH ave you

seen the

Flag Display,

one for each

service branch,

including the

Merchant Ma-

rines, now in

the lobby? Ab-

solutely beauti-

ful.

Part of what makes it such a class act

is Assistant Esquire Ron Taylor’s mag-

ic woodworking touch; he made and

donated the very professional appearing

flagholder.

Ron and Esquire Doug Rhay then

mounted it, with flags, for all to enjoy.

NN ew activities for members to take

part in are always a welcome ad-

dition. Two new ones are being an-

nounced this month.

Merl Beiker, a recent transfer from

Santa Ana Elks, was active in the fish-

ing club at his previous home lodge. He

would like to see one started in Van-

couver, and is taking the reins to see if

he can make it happen.

See the next page for more particu-

lars, and how to contact him.

Have you ever noticed Loyal Knight

Lomoar Majorowicz (say

“Mrrrovich,” it rolls off your tongue)

knitting during board or Lodge meet-

ings? A required form of therapy for

her, she finds it enjoyable, as well, and

wants to share the experience with in-

terested members.

See the announcement on page nine.

kd

We all hope everyone

had a wonderful St.

Valentine’s Day.

The Champagne

Breakfast on February

15th was another suc-

cess. It is always a

pleasure for us to meet

and greet a lot of Elks

and non-Elks.

We also introduced the hand-made quilt

that was donated by PER Dave Hauer and

wife Joann. We are so appreciative of

them. Tickets are $1 each and the drawing

will be in August at our Annual Lodge Pic-

nic. You do not need to be present to win.

This quilt was donated in PER Don Wil-

son’s name. Monies collected will go to the

scholarship fund. Please see any PER for a

ticket or stop by the Lodge office. We are

still giving the Lodge and membership

many hours of time and money and with a

glad heart.

February has us doing many different

projects, plus getting ready for the OR/WA

PER Association meeting on March 7th at

our Lodge.

March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, will be on

a Tuesday night (Lodge Night.) Wear green

and come out to support our efforts. PER

Don Relyea is cooking and in charge of the

evening. It will be a fun night with terrific

food and games.

March 21st will be the Installation of Of-

ficers and the Inaugural Ball. Please buy

your tickets soon and support your new

officers. Your presence will be greatly ap-

preciated. Remember, it’s okay to agree to

disagree.

I thank you for a great year as President

of the Past Exalted Ruler’s Association. As

always, we continue to support our officers

and our Lodge.

VANCOUVER EMBLEM CLUB #473

ATTENTION ANGLERS!

Hi, my name is Merl Bieker. I’m new to the area, re-cently transferred from Santa Ana Elks, where I was involved in a Sports Fishing Club at the Lodge. I would like to start a Fishing Club at Vancouver Lodge. I’m sure that many of you have a great knowledge of the area, and when to drop your line in the water. If you are interested, please give me a call at (714) 742-3391, or e-mail me at [email protected]. The Fishing Club I belonged to had monthly meetings, and planned fishing trips such as Alaska, Wisconsin, Canada, High Sierras and, yes, even the Co-lumbia River. We did local lakes and ocean outings as well. We were very supportive of our Lodge and had sev-eral special events each year. Besides fishing, we held an annual Youth Fishing Derby, did Thanksgiving bas-kets, and donated funds to the State Major Projects and ENF. My hope is that we can have a great group of anglers to fish, and, of course, tell fishing stories.

“May your rod always be bent.” Merl Bieker (714) 742-3391 [email protected] St. Paddy’s Day

Irish Dinner at the Lodge! March 17th!

Don’t Miss It!

Transferee to Initiate Lodge Fishing Club AA member, who recently transferred in from Santa Ana,

CA Lodge #794, has announced an interest in creating a

Fishing Club, similar to what he enjoyed at his previous

home lodge.

While it may be difficult for Northwesterners to visual-

ize Southern California as a hotbed of wet-your-line ac-

tivities, reading Merl Bieker’s synopsis and invitation

(below, with the interesting sign-off,) sounds like a pretty

successful and well-travelled group.

Vancouver has golfers, bowlers, dancers, quilters, card

players, a host of Karaoke singers, and an RV group, but

a dedicated band of fish hunters? That special group of

folk who would rather fish than eat? We’re not aware of

any.

Maybe it’s time. kd

“Our Kids” Washington Elks Therapy Program

for Children, Inc.

Our State Major Project

Mimi is a very sweet,

happy and active two and

a half year old.

She was born with Tri-

somy 21 (Downs Syn-

drome). She needed heart

surgery shortly after birth

and then was referred to

the Elks Therapy Pro-

gram for Children for home-based occupational therapy.

The Elks Therapist goes to her home every week to

providing direct therapy for her development. In addi-

tion , the therapist works with her family to address cur-

rent concerns and provide home program activities that

will help her throughout the week.

In therapy, we have

addressed many aspects

of her development,

starting with building

strength and balance to

help her develop mobil-

ity, beginning with roll-

ing, crawling, walking,

and now jumping!

Mimi has an amazing

ability to throw and

loves to play ball, espe-

cially with her dad.

We also work on fine motor skills, such as holding

crayons for scribbling, stacking blocks, beading, and

shape puzzles.

We promote her imita-

tion skills while scooping,

pouring and stirring in var-

ious materials; also while

playing with her dolls—

brushing their hair and

pretending to feed them.

We also address self help

skills, such as feeding,

dressing and hygiene.

BANQUETS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Event Coordinator Susan Bernstein is put-

ting together a core

group of volunteers to help with all the up-

coming events at the Lodge. If you are interested in helping make our Banquet

and Event team successful and profitable for the Lodge, please contact her at

[email protected] so she can get your name

on the list. The Lodge is moving

in a positive direction with our Events, and

she could really use our help.

Let her know what type of volunteer work

you would like to do.

by Susan Bernstein

Everyone in Mimi‘s world is dedicated to helping her de-

velop her full potential!

Mimi’s parents both work and have insurance, but cov-

erage for her is limited so they are very grateful for the

Elks Therapy Program. This enables them to use their

available insurance for speech therapy which she also

needs. (cont’d next column)
