The Global Alliance of Eye Bank Associations and the prior World Eye Bank Symposium Committee Members welcome you to their

first Global Scientific Meeting since official incorporation in early 2014. This event marks the first of many global opportunities

designed to develop robust discussion, network and promote knowledge exchange and—ultimately - support global corneal eye

care outcomes for millions of waiting recipients.

This meeting will depart from the usual lecture-question-format. Its purpose will be to better engage all participants in a Global

Conversation. The day has been organized into General Themes, with a few lead presentations given to introduce a topic in each

session, before opening into more of a “roundtable discussion” - primarily led, but not dominated by the panel presenters.

Audience members are encouraged to participate in discussions, network and exchange details.

Key Note Address: Prof. Donald T.H. Tan MBBS FRCSG FRCSE FRCOphth FAMS.

Donald Tan is the Medical Director of the Singapore National Eye Centre, immediate past chairman of the Singapore Eye Research Institute, Medical Director of the Singapore Eye Bank, and Professor of Ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore and has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles in the field of cornea and refractive surgery, eye banking, and myopia (h index = 46), contributed 18 book chapters and is the recipient of over 20 awards, which most recently include the EuCornea 2012 Medal, the Arthur Devers 2012 Lecture, the AAO 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award, the 2013 Albrecht von Graefe Innovator’s Lecture, the 2013 Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India Gold Medal, and the CLAO 2014 Oliver H. Dabezies, Jr. Lecture. Professor Tan is the immediate Past President of the Cornea Society, and

founding President of the Asia Cornea Society and the Association of Eye Banks of Asia. He is a founding representative of the GAEBA.

Lunch Presenter: Prof. Mark J. Mannis, MD

Dr Mannis, Professor, is the Chair of the UC Davis Health System Eye Centre, Sacramento, California, and has over 125 publications and five books on topics relating to corneal surgery and diseases. His research has included development of experimental antimicrobial agents and growth factors that effect the corneal wound healing rate, skin diseases that effect the eye, and outcomes of corneal transplant and artificial corneas. Dr Mannis is an active humanitarian providing corneal surgery and teaching around the world. He is a representative for the APABO and is a founding representative of GAEBA.

Global Conversations: Prof. Francis L. Delmonico, MD

Dr Delmonico is the President of The Transplantation Society, Executive Director of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group, Advisor for Human Transplantation, to the World Health Organization, Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts General Hospital, Transplant Center, and Medical Director of the New England Organ Bank. Dr Delmonico has co-authored over 260 publications, and has worked as the Associate Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation, and is currently on the Editorial Board of Transplantation, Kidney International and Clinical Transplantation.

Closing Address: Dr David Schanzlin , MD

Dr Schanzlin is the President, and Associate Medical Director of the San Diego Eye Bank, and is former Professor and Chairman at Saint Louis University’s Department of Ophthalmology and former Director of the prestigious Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute. Dr Schanzlin completed his medical education and residency at the University of Chicago, followed by fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco’s Proctor Foundation.

Speaker: Patricia Dahl, ED/CEO, The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration, New York

Ms Dahl has 30 years experience in eye banking, is a past-Chair of the Eye Bank Association of America and has served on a variety of key committees, including Medical Advisory Board, Accreditation Board and Certification Board. She is also a member of the New York Alliance for Donation, a statewide collaborative organization established to increase awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation, and serves on the New York State

Transplant Council. Ms. Dahl holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN.

Speaker Profiles

Prof. John Armitage: is the Director at the Bristol Eye Bank – which established corneal organ culture in the UK and has provided corneas for > 30,000 transplants, Vice President of the EEBA, former President of the British Association for Tissue Banking, Board Governor to the Society for Cryobiology and Associate Editor of Cryobiology. Prof. Armitage has completed his BSc in Comparative Physiology with Zoology at the University of London; PhD in Cryobiology followed by research posts in Cambridge, UK, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, and Bristol, and has published numerous publications.

Dr Samar K Basak, MD, DNB, FRCS: is Director and one of the founders of Disha Eye Hospitals, Kolkata, India specializing in Cataract, Cornea and External eye diseases, and Eye Bank services. Currently, he is the President, EBAI; Vice president Asia Eye Bank Association; Vice President Cornea Society of India and Editor - and recipient of; CS Reshmi Award, Col. Rangachari Award; ET Selvam Award; Sante Vision Award; PS Hardia Award; AIOS-Cornea Award and RP Dhanda Award from All India Ophthalmological Society. He is also awarded with 8 other Gold Medal orations including the prestigious Prof LP Agarwal Oration by AIIMS and numerous posters, videos and education awards. Dr Basak is an Examiner in FRCS (Glasgow), reviewer of 8 prestig-ious journals including IJO, Ophthalmology, Clinical Ophthalmology, AJO and BJO and has written multiple books papers in peer-review journals. Dr. Basak is currently the. Dr. Basak loves to pursue his unique hobby on special stamp collection - “Ophthaphilately” which he has been recognized by International Philatelic Society. He has also written a book on Ophthaphilately. He is also a founding representative of the GAEBA.

Dr Margareta Claesson Armitage, MD PhD: is the Senior Consultant Director for Corneal Services and Medical Director of the Eye Bank, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. She is also; previous member of the EEBA Board; Cornea representative on the Swedish National Tissue Board - chairing their Cornea subgroup; and Founder and Board Chair of the Swedish Cornea Transplant Register. She completed her PhD thesis in 2008 on register data and corneal transplant outcome.

Prof. Paul Dubord MD: is a Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada, and has been a standing member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Human Cell, Tissue and Organ Transplantation since 2005 for the WHO. Currently, he is a member of the Board for SightLife (recent past chair), as well as an Associate Medical Director. In 1992, he founded EyeSight International a non-profit NGO to support Corneal Transplantation and Eye Banking in the Developing World.

Kevin P. Corcoran, CAE: has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of the EBAA since 2012, and is a founding representative of the GAEBA. Kevin has over 20 years of non-profit management experience, and holds the Certified Association Executive designation, granted by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). He recently completed a six-year term on the Board of Directors of ASAE Business Services, Inc. and is a frequent lecturer on association management topics for ASAE and other organizations. Kevin is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

Prof. Jesper Hjortdal: is Clinical Professor and Consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. He graduated from Aarhus University in 1988 and, has also been a Visiting Research Associate at Stanford University; Honorary Fellow to the Cornea and External Diseases unit at Moorfields Eye Hospital; and was appointed Clinical Professor and Medical Director of The Danish Cornea Bank in 2009. Since 2013 he has been president of the EEBA and has published more than 130 papers and book chapters on corneal biomechanics and surgery.

Bernie Illiakis: is the longest tenured employee of SightLife, joining the organization in July 1995 and has worked in all functions of the eye bank from recovery technician to his current role of Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Bernie is responsible for overseeing all eye bank operations, including all the people and activities involved in the donation process to the flow of ocular tissue in and out of the organization’s three locations. Bernie has been directly or indirectly involved in more than 87% of the corneal tissues provided for transplant by SightLife since 1969. He has also been involved in the EBAA, currently holding a position on the Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Board. He was also a longtime member of the EBAA Accreditation Board as an eye bank inspector. Bernie earned his Master’s Degree in Health Administration from the University of Washington and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, also from the UW.

Heather Machin, RN: is a practicing ophthalmic Registered Nurse, GAEBA and EBAANZ representative, Project Officer at Lions Eye Donation Service (University of Melbourne - Centre for Eye Research Australia), Consultant to the Fred Hollows Foundation-NZ, Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Ophthalmic Practice and prior Associate Director of Nursing at ORBIS International. Working in over 30 countries, she has (co)authored numerous papers, editorials and text chapters and received awards and nominations from; Rotary Australia, Pride of Australia Medals and the University of Queensland. She has developed numerous training programs for several institutions including the Fiji National University - Pacific Eye Institute, Fiji, and has post-graduate qualifications in professional communications and public relations, and ophthalmic nursing.

Speaker Profiles

Gary L.A. Jones, BSc (Econ): is the International Coordinator for the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation in Venice, Italy. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from University College of Swansea (Wales) and spent his early career in the UK assisting academics and researchers obtain research funding, primarily from the European Commission in Brussels. In 2000 he relocated to Italy and began working for the Veneto Eye Bank, with special responsibility for managing the bank’s international collaborative links that now encompass 35 transplant centers in 16 countries. Since 2003 he has been the Executive Officer for the European Eye Bank Association and overseas the day-to-day workings of the EEBA Secretariat.

Enrique O. Graue-Hernández MD, MSc: is the Director of the Cornea & Refractive Unit at the Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana, México, Medical Director of the Red-Cross Eye Bank, Mexico City and Assistant Professor in Cornea , Refractive Surgery and External Disease and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico. His interests include Corneal refractive surgery in keratoconus, wound healing, and revention of blindness.

Marian S. Macsai, MD is President-Elect of the Cornea Society; Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at NorthShore University Health System; Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine; and serves as Medical Director of the Eye & Vision Center located at Glenbrook Hospital; examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmolo-gy; Advisory Committee member on both the Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability (ACBTSA) and World Health Organization Biovigilance and Surveillance Committees and has served as Chair of the Eye Bank Association of America and Secretary/Treasurer of the Cornea Society and as Ophthalmic Devices Panel member to the Food and Drug Administration. As a Board Certified Ophthalmologist with fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery she is a member with thesis of the American Ophthalmologic Society recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Paton Award, Distinguished Contributions in Medicine Award, and other outstanding teaching/education awards.

Dr Silvana Madi: is currently assistant lecturer of Ophthalmology at Alexandria - University, Egypt. She obtained both her medical bachelor and her Master Degrees in ophthalmology at the University of Alexandria where she is also completing her Doctorate in Medicine degree. She trained in ophthalmology at the Main University Hospital in Alexandria and completed a cornea fellowship at Villa Igea, Italy with surgical training in lamellar corneal surgery with the eminent Dr Massimo Busin. She is the author and co-author of multiple publications including a thesis about Mushroom keratoplasty with Dr Busin - published in Transactions of American ophthalmological society. She has contributed to over 10 training courses about lamellar keratoplasty delivered through ASCRS, ESCRS and AAO meetings and is currently establishing the first eye bank in Alexandria Egypt and is running a tertiary referral consultant cornea practice in Alexandria.

Dr Dominique Martin, MBBS, BA (Hons Phil), PhD: is Lecturer in Health Ethics at the Centre for Health Equity within the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne. She is co-chair of the Ethics Committee of The Transplantation Society, and a member of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group. Dr Martin's bioethics research explores issues relating to the procurement, use and distribution of human biological materials and medical products of human origin, especially in the setting of cross-border markets and medical travel. She has collaborated with the World Health Organization's Initiative on Medical Products of Human Origin and has been instrumental in assisting EBAANZ to develop their first Bioethical Framework.

Dr José Ramón Núñez Peña MD, PhD: is the recently appointed Medical Officer for Transplanta-tion and Special Advisor for the Initiative for Medical Products of Human Origin at the World Health Organization, Geneva. Dr Núñez was previously Transplant Coordinator of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid. Dr. Nunez completed his training at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos and the Mayo Clinic and has authored over 100 publications and more than 300 communications and lectures at conferences and national and international symposia.

Speaker Profiles

S Louise Moffatt: has been the Manager of the New Zealand National Eye Bank since 2000, having previously managed numerous biomedical research projects. She has also been a member of government committees and forums on donation and transplantation and is a founding member of the EBAANZ - having co-authored their Medical and Quality Standards, and held executive positions as Deputy Chair and Secretary. She currently presents EBAANZ on the international Eye Bank Technical Advisory Group, established by ICCBBA, regarding eye tissue terminology and ISBT 128 coding. With a BSc degree in Virology and Immunology, Louise has received numerous awards for leadership from the University of Auckland and has (co)authored numerous papers and book chapters and has peer reviewed several journal articles and research grants.

Miguel Rio del Armo: is a Cornea Fellow From Carriazo Ophthtalmic center in Colombia who has completed fellowship training in Eye banking essentials and public health at OHSU and Lions Vision Gift Eye bank (Portland, Oregon). He currently works as a Cornea surgeon at Tabancura Clinic, and is the Ophthalmic Service Chief at the Health Reference Center SAG in Santiago, Chile and the Cornea Coordinator in North metropolitan Hospital in Santiago, Chile (San José).

Dr Graeme Pollock BSc (Hons), MPH, PhD: began his career as a cell biologist working in the field of organ preservation. This experience led him into the field of eye banking, and in 1991 he became inaugural manager of the Lions Eye Donation Service in Melbourne where he is now the Director of Service. Graeme holds a joint appointment with The University of Melbourne and the Centre for Eye Research Australia and is; Chair for EBAANZ; founding representative and developer for GAEBA; Clinical Governance Committee member for the Australian National Authority for Organ and Tissue Donation; founding editorial board member for the International Journal of Eye Banking; invited member on the EBAA’s Medical Advisory panel; and past President of the Australasian Transplant Coordinators Association. Graeme has published widely and presented internationally within eye banking.

Prof. Keryn Williams: is an Australian National Health & Medical Research Council Principal Research Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology within the School of Medicine at Flinders University. A BSc (Hons) and PhD graduate of the University of Melbourne. She undertook her postdoctoral research in the Nuffield Department of Surgery at the University of Oxford UK, where she first developed a career-long interest in transplantation immunobiology. On returning to Australia, she began to work in the eye. She established, and is the scientific director, of the Australian Corneal Graft Registry and maintains research interests in corneal transplantation and ocular inflammation, novel drugs and devices for ophthalmic use, antibody engineering, and aberrant ocular angiogenesis.

Jeffrey G. Penta, MBA, CEBT: is the Executive Director of the San Diego Eye Bank and has over 35 years of experience in eye banking. Having served on many of the EBAA’s committees and currently serving on its Board of Directors, he is recognized for his dedication to further eye banking worldwide by direction, and promotion, of the International Cornea Project and United Sight. He has also served the Pan American Association of Eye Banks on its Board of Directors, as Treasurer and as its Executive Director. He is a long time member of the North American Transplant Coordinators Organization, the American Society for Microbiology and the New York Academy of Sciences. Mr Penta has a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from San Diego State University and a Masters in Business Administration/Law from National University.

Ma. Dominga B. Padilla, MD, FPAO: is a consultant and head of the Out-Patient Surgical Unit at St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City; Associate Clinical Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of the Philippines, Manila; founder and president of the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines; and a current and founding council member of the Asia Cornea Society; and Vice President of the AEBA. As a medical graduate from the University of the Philippines, Manila she completed Residency Training in Ophthalmology at the Philippine General Hospital, with further corneal and eye bank training at Tissue Banks International, Baltimore Maryland and the International Eye Bank of Prague. She has earned numerous awards, including recognition for her contribution to blindness prevention in the Asia Pacific Region by the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and has published widely.
