Indiana’s Academic Standards describe what mathematics you should learn this school

year. Your textbook, Math Connects, Course 2, is one of the main tools you will use to

learn this math. If you master the mathematics, you should be able to do well on the

ISTEP+ test in the spring.

This workbook, Mastering the ISTEP+, is another tool to help you review the

mathematics you will need for performing well on the test this year. It is actually two

workbooks in one.

This side of the workbook contains tools to help you determine which of the standards

you know well and which ones you still need to practice. The questions are similar to

those you might see on the ISTEP+ test.

The Reference Sheet on the next page lists some of the formulas that you should

be familiar with in order to solve problems more quickly.

A Prerequisite Skills Check tests the standards from last year, which are tools

you’ll need for this year’s mathematics.

The Diagnostic Test assesses the math skills you will learn this year.

The Practice by Standard section contains worksheets that focus on each

standard individually. These also can be used to practice types of questions you

may have answered incorrectly on the Diagnostic Test.

In the Problem Solving section, you will learn how to read word problems

and find the best ways to solve them.

Practice Tests are included to help determine how much you have learned

this year.

If you flip this workbook over, you will find the Study Guide and Intervention and Practice Workbook, Course 2 that goes along with your student edition textbook.

There are two pages of practice for each lesson in your textbook. These pages review

the math being taught in the lesson and give you practice problems for that math.

Remember that the most important thing is to concentrate on learning the

mathematics. When you know the math, you have the power to do well on the test.

Follow the Four-Step Plan below to help you answer Problem 1.

1 Kayla recorded low temperatures for the past 10 days. The temperature fell 8° on the first day, rose 2° each day for 5 days, then dropped 4° each day for 4 days, and on the 10th day was -17°. What was the temperature at the beginning of the first day?

Answer

Kayla read in the newspaper that the forecast for temperature for the next two days will be one-third the temperature that she recorded the first day. What will be the temperature for the next 2 days?

Answer

Read the problem.

What do you want to find?

The work backward strategy can help you organize the facts in the problem to find the temperature on the first day.

Why will the work backward strategy be helpful?

You can use the look for a pattern strategy to find the number of minutes Jaime worked out on the elliptical machine if he worked out with free weights for 30 minutes.

Look at the organized list. What is the difference between 30 minutes on free weights and 16 minutes on free weights?

What pattern can you use in the list to find the number of minutes Jaime would spend on the elliptical machine?

Reread the problem.

Are all the ratios of elliptical machine to free weights equal to 3 minutes:2 mintues?
