What does it mean to be a Chris an? Someone who is clearly iden able as a follower of Christ? Does it involve striv- ing for perfec on? Or being incredibly and impeccably well mannered? Or is it about something deeper? Take a long hard look at the cross, and really think about it, what it must have been like to hang there, with all the shame and humilia on of it, and Id hope the answer to that last ques on would be that to be a Chris an in- volves much deeper commitment than simply being well mannered, and perfectly well behaved. This morning as I danced around the Vicarage oce waving a hymn book about trying to kill or seriously injure a large wasp, it was plain to see that I am not perfect, as the strains of All things bright and beau fuland All creatures of our God and Kingsprung to mind. (The wasp got away, and was last seen ying up Sandicro Road!)We are not called to perfec on, that is not what being a person of the crossis about. We are called though to love one another, and to accept and em- brace each others imperfec ons, as Jesus does. He transforms those imper- fec ons - the lust for power of those who condemn Him, the unques oning crowds complicit ignorance, and the unjust structures of a society bent on maintaining the status quo chief amongst those imperfec ons Jesus trans- forms all of that which leads to the cross into a symbol of redemp ve love, love that transforms evil into a display of reconcilia on. In other words, God draws all of us back to Him in spite of ourselves. What does it mean to be a person of the cross? It means that we seek to embrace our neighbours, friends, families and enemies in reconciling love. Love one another as I have loved you,Jesus says. And you cant do that on your own. Chris anity is about more than being good, some mes Chris ans are bad(It depends who is judging!). If Godhates the same people you hate, then it is me to come back to Church, because in that is a problem. God is bigger than our ideas of Him. Over Holy Week we will be exploring all of these ideas in more detail. What does it mean to be a person of the cross? How do we cope with our own and each others imperfec ons? What does Gods love look like today? How does God respond to the voices of hatred? We look forward to welcoming you this Easter! Yours in faith and hope, Alastair

What does it mean to be a ‘person of the cross’? What does it mean to be a Chrisan? Someone who is clearly idenfiable as a follower of Christ? Does it involve striv-ing for perfecon? Or being incredibly and impeccably well mannered? Or is it about something deeper? Take a long hard look at the cross, and really think about it, what it must have been like to hang there, with all the shame and humiliaon of it, and I’d hope the answer to that last queson would be that to be a Chrisan in-volves much deeper commitment than simply being well mannered, and perfectly well behaved. This morning as I danced around the Vicarage office waving a hymn book about trying to kill or seriously injure a large wasp, it was plain to see that I am not perfect, as the strains of ‘All things bright and beauful’ and ‘All creatures of our God and King’ sprung to mind. (The wasp got away, and was last seen flying up Sandicro Road!)…

We are not called to perfecon, that is not what being a ‘person of the cross’ is about. We are called though to love one another, and to accept and em-brace each others imperfecons, as Jesus does. He transforms those imper-fecons - the lust for power of those who condemn Him, the unquesoning crowd’s complicit ignorance, and the unjust structures of a society bent on maintaining the status quo chief amongst those imperfecons – Jesus trans-forms all of that which leads to the cross into a symbol of redempve love, love that transforms evil into a display of reconciliaon. In other words, God draws all of us back to Him in spite of ourselves. What does it mean to be a person of the cross? It means that we seek to embrace our neighbours, friends, families and enemies in reconciling love. ‘Love one another as I have loved you,’ Jesus says. And you can’t do that on your own. Chrisanity is about more than being ‘good’, somemes Chrisans are ‘bad’ (It depends who is judging!). If ‘God’ hates the same people you hate, then it is me to come back to Church, because in that is a problem. God is bigger than our ideas of Him. Over Holy Week we will be exploring all of these ideas in more detail. What does it mean to be a person of the cross? How do we cope with our own and each others imperfecons? What does God’s love look like today? How does God respond to the voices of hatred?

We look forward to welcoming you this Easter!
