WOODFORD TRIES TO BEAT STUD FEE RISEBy Ron Mitchell

With stud fees tracking upward, Woodford

Thoroughbreds is buying mares in foal to

fashionable stallions to beat the price hike.

On Nov. 4 at the third session of the Keeneland

November breeding sale, Woodford purchased

Overprepared, a stakes-winning 3-year-old Quality

Road mare in foal to leading first-crop sire Uncle

Mo, for $450,000, the day's second-highest price.

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Over-

prepared won the Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct for

Repole Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher this year.

Overprepared is a half sister to Personal Ensign

Stakes (gr. I) winner Shadow Cast.

"It's a little concerning the way stud fees are going

up, so we're trying to buy some mares in foal to the

right horses, and I think we got a nice one here today,"

said Matt Lyons of Woodford Thoroughbreds. "She

was our top pick for the day on physical; an absolutely

beautiful mare. She was gorgeous; a half sister to a

grade I winner, and in foal to a good horse." BH

LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMI SPENT IT TO STAND AT OCALA STUD IN 2016 I Spent It, winner of the 2014 Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II), has been retired from racing and will stand in 2016 at J. Michael O'Farrell's Ocala Stud in Florida. A fee will be announced soon.

THE PIZZA MAN WILL MISS JAPAN CUP A minor lung infection will keep Midwest Thoroughbreds' homebred Arlington Million (gr. IT) winner stateside.

BORELL-MCINGVALE DISPUTE COULD GO TO COURT The ongoing dispute between trainer Maria Borell and owner James McIngvale took another turn when Borell's attorney indicated there may be future legal action taken regarding purse money earned by Runhappy.

COMEBACKING GRADE II WINNERS HEAD CHILUKKI Grade II winners Birdatthewire, Keen Pauline, and Gold Medal Dancer head a field of eight fillies and mares entered for the $200,000 Chilukki Stakes (gr. II) Nov. 7 at Churchill Downs.

MUTATIS MUTANDIS, DANZA CAVALLO MEET AGAIN The second- and third-place finishers from the Flower Bowl Stakes (gr. IT) Oct. 3 on the Belmont Park turf, Danza Cavallo and Mutatis Mutandis, are scheduled to meet again in Long Island Handicap (gr. IIIT).

EIGHT STAKES FOR SUNSHINE MILLIONS PREVIEW H. Jack Hendricks and Roger Justice's East Hall is scheduled to seek a repeat victory in the Millions Classic Preview, a 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-olds and up that attracted a field of seven.

MORE GAINS, SELECTIVITY AT KEENELANDBy Glenye Cain Oakford

Keeneland's November breeding stock sale kicked

off Book 2 Nov. 4 with more gains but higher buy-

backs. Session three sold 229 horses for $30,788,000,

up 3.7% from last year's total for 271. Average jumped

23% to $134,445, and median rose 18% to $100,000.

Cumulatively, the first three days have sold 508

horses for $139,666,000, 11% ahead of last sea-

son's total for 544 horses. Average is 19% higher at

$274,933, and median climbed 28% to $160,000.

Buy-backs remained stubbornly ahead of last

year's numbers: the session RNA rate was 27%, up

from a low 20% in 2014, and the cumulative rate

through Wednesday was 27%, up from 22%.

Keeneland's sales director Geoffrey Russell called

the session "excellent" but agreed with many con-

signors who found the mare market spotty, noting,

"Any holes in the produce records or coverings, buy-

ers are being very picky on."

Young mares were particularly attractive to buy-

ers, but, as Russell said, "You have to have some

produce. You have to have some winners, if you have

a little black type, you're doing very well. But (buyers)

are very selective." BH

NO DEAL FOR TONALIST; CIGAR MILE NEXTBy Evan Hammonds

Without a stud deal, Robert "Shel" Evans' Tonalist

remains in training, and the son of Tapit will like-

ly start in the Nov. 28 Cigar Mile Handicap (gr. I).

A deal announced last October that Lane's End

had acquired an interest in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I)

winner is off the table.

"We agreed to cancel that," Evans said. "Otherwise,

that would have happened.

"I have not come to any agreement with any farm.

I think it's very strange. A Belmont winner, a two-time

(Jockey Club) Gold Cup (gr. I) winner, and a son of

Tapit. I don't get it."

Last year Tonalist won the Peter Pan Stakes (gr.

II), Belmont, and Jockey Club Gold Cup at 3. This year

he won the one-mile Westchester Stakes (gr. III) and

finished second to Honor Code in the one-mile Met-

ropolitan Handicap (gr. I) before his Jockey Club Gold

Cup repeat.

Evans also mentioned the Dubai World Cup

(UAE-I) as a potential 2016 target. BH

SALE-TOPPER MOHAYMEN JUSTIFIES PRICEBy Madison Scott

A 2-year-old that showed potential as a yearling

validated his early promise at Aqueduct in the

$200,000 Nashua Stakes (gr. II) Nov. 4. Shadwell Sta-

ble's Mohaymen, the co-sale-topper from the 2014

Keeneland September yearling sale at $2.2 million,

won the one-turn mile in his stakes debut to remain

undefeated.

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the Tapit colt

stalked the pace, swung wide on the turn, and

passed the front-runners, winning by 1 3/4 lengths.

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms out of the

Dixie Union mare Justwhistledixie, Mohaymen is

a half brother to 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr.

I) winner New Year's Day. The other $2.2 million

yearling from 2014, a War Front colt named Air Vice

Marshal, is group II-placed in England.

McLaughlin also wasn't shy about his aspirations

for Mohaymen.

"We definitely have Derby fever," McLaughlin said.

"(His next race) would be the Remsen (gr. II) or the

Kentucky Jockey Club (gr. II) at Churchill Downs on

the same day (Nov. 28). BH

THROWBACK: $7 MILLION FOR KORVEYABy Tom Hall

Top price at the 2015 Keeneland November breed-

ing stock sale is the $6 million for broodmare

prospect Take Charge Brandi, 2014's champion

2-year-old filly. The top-priced broodmare is the $1.9

million 4-year-old stakes-placed Galileo mare Terrific

in foal to War Front.

Seventeen years ago the Keeneland November

auction board lit up at $7 million for the group III

stakes-winning Riverman mare Korveya in foal to

Woodman, tying the record set at the 1985 Fasig-Tip-

ton Newstead Farm dispersal for the grade I-winning

4-year-old Alydar mare Miss Oceana in foal to North-

ern Dancer.

While Miss Oceana had sold at the beginning of

her broodmare career, the Stavros Niarchos-bred

Korveya was 16 years old and had already foaled

three European classic winners: Hector Protector and

Shanghai for the Niarchos family, and Bosra Sham.

Offered to dissolve a partnership between British

horseman Gerald Leigh and the Jayeff B Stables of

Richard Santulli and George Prussin, Korveya was

purchased by Jayeff B. Though Korveya produced

seven more foals, only one was a winner. BH

NZ-BRED WINNER REAFFIRMS LOCAL QUALITYBy Tara Madgwick

The Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) over 3,200 meters run

at Flemington Nov. 3 produced a 100-1 winner

in New Zealand-bred 6-year-old gelding Prince Of

Penzance (Pentire). His victory left most punters with

empty pockets, but it provided the ultimate feel-good

racing story of the year.

Trained locally in Victoria by Darren Weir and

owned by Australians, Prince Of Penzance was ridden

by Michelle Payne, who became the first female jock-

ey to win the Melbourne Cup.

In recent times Australian owners have beaten a

path to European horse sales to secure high-class

ready-made stayers, but the success of Prince Of

Penzance has reaffirmed the the local product's

quality. All three winners of Australia's spring group-I

majors—Mongolian Khan (Caulfield Cup), Winx (Cox

Plate) and now Prince Of Penzance—were bred in

Australasia and sold at public auction as yearlings.

Australasian yearling sales for 2016 begin in Janu-

ary with the Magic Millions yearling sale on the Gold

Coast. BH

FEES SET FOR HONOR CODE, LIAM'S MAPBy Claire Novak

Multiple grade I winner Honor Code will stand

for $40,000 while Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I)

victor Liam's Map is available for $25,000. Both are

new to Lane's End, which released its 2016 roster of

stallions and fees Nov. 4.

Honor Code, who counts the Whitney Stakes (gr.

I) and Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) among his six ca-

reer wins for Lane's End Racing and Dell Ridge Farm,

comes off a third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I)

behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah at

Keeneland. Teresa Viola Racing bought into the son

of A.P. Indy before his Classic finale.

After taking the Woodward (gr. I) and running

second to Honor Code in the Whitney, Liam's Map

(Unbridled's Song) closed the door on his career for

Viola Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds with his

Dirt Mile victory.

The Versailles, Ky., operation also raised the fee for

The Factor—whose first-crop yearlings have averaged

$143,499 this year—from $15,000 to $25,000. BH

BUYERS SEEK 'SUNDAY SILENCE-FREE' MARESBy Naohiro Goda

Japanese buyers are active at November sales in

Kentucky and key phrases among the Japanese

are "Sunday Silence-free" and "mares suitable for

Sunday Silence stallions."

For two decades Japan's racing has been over-

whelmed by Sunday Silence, whose dominance is

obvious. For example, 14 out of 18 runners in the

Nov. 1 Emperor's Cup (Jpn-I) were sired by sons of

Sunday Silence; another three of the 18 have Sun-

day Silence on their dam side. Only one in the field

was "Sunday Silence-free."

Japanese breeders have recently been buying

Sunday Silence-free fillies at yearling and 2-year-

old auctions, as future mares. For example, Kat-

sumi Yoshida of Northern Farm bought recent

Swan Stakes (Jpn-II) winner Albiano, a 3-year-old

Harlan's Holiday filly, at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Flori-

da sale for $400,000.

Sales statistics show Japanese buyers pur-

chased 37 lots at the breeze-up sales in the United

States and Europe earlier this year, 16 of them

fillies bought by breeders. BH

RISE AND FALL AT GROUND ZERO

Twenty-five years have passed since officials

at what then was called Mountaineer Park

received permission to operate, in conjunction

with the West Virginia Lottery, video gaming

machines in a small glass-enclosed room on the

top floor of the clubhouse dining room, the first

of its kind in horse racing.

The experiment, designed to keep the year-

round racing facility from closing, was called

"Mountaineer Magic," an event so popular

that hundreds more video lottery terminals

were placed on the grandstand's second floor.

Questions about the legality of the operation,

however, led to the West Virginia legislature

passing a 1994 law authorizing the state's four

pari-mutuel facilities to install VLTs only if voters

in the county in which the tracks were located

approved.

Mountaineer was sold, went public, expand-

ed to a full resort, and for a time operated one

of the most successful gaming operations in

the country—before neighboring Pennsylvania

and Ohio authorized casinos. The magic is gone.

A facility that had become a trendsetter for

the Thoroughbred racing industry is now

just another racetrack casino struggling to

maintain an acceptable racing program in

the face of intense competition for gam-

bling dollars.

Purses, which heavily rely on VLT rev-

enue, tell the tale. For 160 programs of

racing this year—50 more dates were cut

to avoid major purse reductions—purses

averaged $98,391 per day, the lowest aver-

age since $84,760 in 1999. The high point

came in 2003 when Mountaineer paid

$175,244 per night over 222 racing days.

Average field size that year was 9.37, an

amazing number given its 10-horse limit. This

year's field size average was 7.05, believed to

be the lowest in the history of the track, which

opened as Waterford Park in 1951.

Winter racing, which consistently generated

the track's highest nightly average handle be-

cause of its popularity in the simulcast market-

place, is gone, as is year-round stabling. And the

reversal of fortunes isn't limited to Mountaineer;

other North American tracks are feeling the pinch

from the oversaturation of casino gambling.

Mountaineer and its horsemen's group get

credit for tackling the problem by agreeing to

cut days, which are sacred to owners and train-

ers. The idea is to form a circuit with Hollywood

Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, which

is located about 45 minutes away in Ohio and

races through the winter.

But Gary Patterson, a jockey agent who

trained at Mountaineer when video gaming be-

gan, is direct in his assessment of the situation

for the racing industry. He believes the early

success of the Ohio tracks, which installed VLTs

a few years ago, won't last.

"We got the machines first," Patterson said.

"It's not a novelty anymore. We got a good 20

years out of it at Mountaineer. They'll get 10." BH
