FROM THE PASTOR PARISH NEWS

www.StAmbrose.us - PAGE 3 May 3, 2015

…”The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in

numbers.” Our first reading is reflecting on the early Church taking form and shape. It was a Church growing and alive. It was guided by the Spirit and strengthened to do the work of the Lord. It was at peace in the Lord. As we anticipate the Feast of Pentecost on May 23/24, how can we keep opening our hearts to the stirring of the Spirit of God? It is the Holy Spirit that will continue to guide our efforts and strengthen our ability to live out the will of God in our lives. Come, Holy Spirit!

…'An act of perfect conformity to the will of God unites us more to Him than a hundred other acts of virtue.' - St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

…The Easter Season is a time of new life and growth in the ways of the Lord. It’s also a time of transition and change. As most of you know, our beloved Father McNeil will be leaving our community after 5 ½ years of faithful and generous service. The good news – we get to celebrate his 40th anniversary of priestly ordination. Please join us at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, for a Mass of Thanksgiving and a reception to follow. We will also have the opportunity to thank Father McNeil for his ‘jokes’ and good spirit before he leaves in early June.

…While I am sad to see Father McNeil leave us, I am grateful to God that we have been selected to receive one of the newly ordained priests to Saint Ambrose this June. Deacon Rob Ramser is finishing up his seminary studies and will be ordained as a Diocesan Priest on Saturday, May 16, 2015, by Bishop Lennon at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist. His home parish is Saint Stanislaus. This is a great blessing for our parish community. Please join me in praying for Deacon Rob in these final weeks of preparation for his ordination. I know that our parish will become a wonderful first assignment for him.

…Many thanks to Dan Samide as he concludes his field ed year at Saint Ambrose. Dan is completing his first year at Saint Mary Seminary and has done a GREAT job working with the RCIA and the FIAT programs. Please pray for him! Pray also for an increase in vocations. May some of our men and women respond to the call to priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life.

…Pattie Batchman, our amazing DRE for the past six years, informed me this past week that she has accepted a Pastoral Ministry position at Saint Patrick Parish in Thompson. I know…you and I are both asking ourselves where is “Thompson?” It’s about 85 miles from Brunswick. As many of you know, for the past two years Pattie has been commuting from the far east side (close to Geneva and Ashtabula) where her husband works and they have renovated an old/tired house into a peaceful and loving home for them and their growing family (another grandchild on the way). Gratefully, Pattie made the sacrifice of the commute so she could help fulfill the vision of creating our Catechetical Center and continue the great work she has helped stir up in our parish community. We are so blessed with a thriving PSR and Adult Faith Formation Program… thanks to God’s grace and her hard work. We will GREATLY miss her enthusiasm and spirit. She will be leaving our parish at the end of May. Watch for details on an appropriate farewell for her. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

…Fortunately, we have been working over the past two years to create a very strong team of people who are leading so much of our PSR and Faith Formation Programs. Pattie has been working tirelessly to mentor some really great folk who will continue to support our efforts to help all the children of God grow in the ways of the Lord. We are in good hands.

…This Saturday (May 2) is the first Diaconate Ordination in our diocese in many years. There was a break in the program to update the formation process. Our Diocese is blessed to welcome nine new deacons. It’s a good moment to pray for Matt Harley from our parish who is discerning the call to the Diaconate. A good time, also, to invite and pray that other men in our parish will open their hearts to the call to serve the Lord and the Church as Deacons. If you would like to talk more about the diaconate, please give me a call.

…Tweet of the week came from Kevin Stankiewicz: “Yesterday, I received a care package to help prepare for finals week from the @StAmbrose FIAT crew. So grateful and blessed.” We pray for all of our college students as they wrap up the school year. Welcome home. Many thanks to our FIAT team as they do wonderful things for our high school and college students. As we approach August, parents, please send us the address of your college student so we can send thoughtful notes and care packages to let your son/daughter!

…Another GREAT email came from Holy Name High School. Saint Ambrose School graduate (and our maintenance team member) Joe Stibley was honored on Sunday, April 26 at its annual academic banquet. He was recognized for his achievement in the classroom and presented with a medal and certificate. Congrats, Joe! God bless all of our graduates.

…As we turn the page of the calendar to May, it means that the Summer Kickoff Festival is rapidly approaching! The committee has been hard at work putting together a great start to the summer season. The festival will have GREAT food…..more RIDES than ever….lots of FUN music and games….all the makings for great family fun. Mark your calendars for June 4 to 7. We also are looking for volunteers. It’s a great time and wonderful way to celebrate the goodness of our parish community. Many thanks to all who have already turned in their Summer Festival Raffle tickets. We need your help and support to address and maintain our parish facilities…especially the parking lots!!

…The Church was ‘built up’ and at its best moments last Saturday for our Community Service Day. Many thanks to Megan Lowes and the planning team for orchestrating the effort that allowed over 200 of us to tackle 22 projects. Many hands….working together…did great good for our community and for many families in need in our neighborhoods. God bless you for all you do in service to those in need. The Community Service Day was one more expression of your goodness and commitment to serve the Lord. Mike Adams is helping lead the monthly community service projects. If you know of someone who is in need of help and unable to do the work or afford the work themselves, please let us know. We are here to help our sisters and brothers in their times of need.

…Golfing does a lot of good! Especially if you are golfing in the 2nd Annual Saint Ambrose Golf Outing on Sunday, 31. All the proceeds are used to make sure that all our young people have the support they need to be able to attend our Catholic school and PSR programs. Golfing for a good cause. Help us do great good and sell out the event. See today’s bulletin for details.

…In these days of May, we look to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the model of discipleship. As she made her ‘yes’ to the Lord the Spirit of God filled her with God’s grace and blessings. As we continue to make our ‘yes,’ may you know God’s grace and blessings of peace.

Being a part of the Family of God, we are all called to be good stewards of our gi s and to share them with others. Robyn Vavrek is an example of living her faith.

Robyn, her husband Dan, and their two children Ben and Abbey have been parishioners for a li le over a year and a half. Robyn was a part of our RCIA program, and was welcomed into the Catholic faith in 2014 at the Easter Vigil.

Robyn is a 2nd grade Catechist this year in our PSR program bringing her passion, love of the Lord and enthusiasm to the students in her classroom. We are truly blessed to have her genuine and generous spirit as a part of our program. Next year Robyn will be moving into our 3rd grade classroom to con nue to share her gi s and grow on her journey.

Abbey will be celebra ng her First Eucharist on May 9th and to see her excitement and joy as she prepares for this special day in her life has been inspiring. Robyn has been a part of the Sacramental Prepara on team for First Eucharist and plans to con nue next year. She will also be volunteering for our Vaca on Bible School this summer.

When asked what she loves most about our Saint Ambrose Parish, Robyn saint “It’s the warm, welcoming feeling and a sense of belonging. It feels like home.”

A emp ng to pick up the pieces of one’s life a er the tragedy of divorce is complex and demanding. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church s ll care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do?

The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland is con nuing to offer its very successful First Step Program in order to help individuals deal with these ques ons. The Church’s teachings on marriage, divorce, and remarriage are o en misunderstood. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching in these areas. Representa ves from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain their ministry to those who are divorced.

The schedule for the general mee ngs in 2015 is:

• Tuesday, 12 May 2015, at St. Gabriel Parish, Concord, at 7:00 pm

• Tuesday, 15 September 2015, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Cuyahoga Falls, at 7:00 pm

• Tuesday, 13 October 2015, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 pm

For more informa on, check their website: www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal or call the Tribunal: 216-696-6525/800-869-6525, ext. 4000.

L D M D T , M 12 | 7:00-9:00 | L C Are you or someone you know feeling an overwhelming, unexplained sadness? Have a loss of interest in things that once brought pleasure? Feel erra c mood swings and changes in feelings? Having difficulty carrying out the most simple, daily tasks?

If you answered yes to any of these ques ons, please join us for a very informa ve presenta on by Dr. Joseph Calabrese, M.D., Director of the Mood Disorders Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Mood disorders are distressingly common and not only affect the individual, but family and friends as well. PSR C L D ! Last Saturday PSR students had the opportunity during their class me to join together with 200 parishioners in the first Saint Ambrose Community Day of Service.

The morning kicked off with an Opening Prayer Service in Hilkert Hall followed by job assignments for everyone. There were all different types of jobs that needed to be done around the campus and in the surrounding community.

PSR 1st graders worked in the community garden cleaning out weeds, 2nd grade cleaned out flower beds around the Parish Life Center, 3rd and 4th grades worked in cleaning out the baseball field, and 5th and 6th grades worked cleaning up by the Gro o.

This was a wonderful hands-on lesson for our students in learning about doing what God asks from all of us, to do service for others. Giving back to our parish and our community is a great way to teach our children to put their faith into ac on.

On Tuesday, April 21, Saint Ambrose School Student Council officers and representa ves mulched the Parish Orchard in honor of Earth Day. It was a wonderful opportunity for these students to understand the significance of Earth Day and the importance of taking care of God’s Crea on.

M . R ’

Ms. Rego’s science class celebrated Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22 , with centers developed around this holiday. One of the things they took part in was called the Earth Day Groceries project. This is an environmental awareness project that

involves borrowing brown paper bags from a local grocery store, decorating them with Earth Day conservation and friendly environmental messages and pictures and then delivering them back to the store to use on Earth Day. Shoppers at Buehler’s in Brunswick were very excited to received their groceries in bags covered with amazing artwork by Saint Ambrose third graders!

F J ... MESSAGE

JUNIOR HIGH NEWS

One thing I can tell you is that my faith did not develop itself. I had a good group of friends that accepted me and helped

me grow, but looking back at my journey, the people that inspired me the most were my adult youth-group leaders. To this day, they are my Christian role models, and I will never forget the love they showed me. It was palpable, real, and a relationship I actually felt excited about. They showed me—through their everyday life—how to be a Christian. This is the heart of what it means to evangelize.

We must be witnesses who LIVE OUT our faith in a bold way. We need to reveal a “spontaneous Christ-likeness” to every person we encounter. One of the most powerful quotes often associated with the New Evangelization is: Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses (Pope Paul VI, 1974).

The medium is the message. If we want to share the Gospel—we must BE the Gospel.

Now...go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
