As mentioned last week, the Kaleidescope
of Culture Carnival is happening on
Saturday evening and it is my
understanding that there are a few tickets
left. So if you have not made the
purchase yet, I highly encourage you to
do so. It promises to be a great evening.
I would also like to remind everyone of the SCO Meeting
scheduled for Tuesday, 22 April at 08:30 in the Library
Projection Room. The details can be found on page 3.
The Grade 5 Exhibition is set for next Thursday evening,
24 April at 18:00. All parents, not just the Grade 5 parents,
are invited to stop by and see what our inquiring Grade 5
students have to show you as a result of their hard work
over the last several weeks. This is a culminating activity
within our PYP program and is a highlight of the year for
me. Please join us.
Finally as our Grade 12 students enter their final week of
regular classes before IB exams, I take this opportunity to
remind everyone of the schedule on the day of Graduation
which is Monday 26 May. The Graduation Ceremony at
UNIS Hanoi marks not only the end of High School for
our Grade 12 Students, but is also a celebration of
education from Discovery through to Grade 12 for our
unique institution. UNIS Hanoi is proud to be one of only
two United Nations schools in the world and the role it has
played in the lives of our students, their families, and our
host country.
For our teachers, we believe that they represent
symbolically all the teachers that have impacted our
graduates in their D-12 journey, whilst at the same time
acknowledging the importance and connectivity of all
teaching at all grades in UNIS Hanoi to this final academic
culmination. For our high school students, we want them
to witness this event and be inspired to achieve at the same
high level and even higher.
Therefore all faculty D-12 and Grade 9-11 students will be
in attendance at the Graduation. The early dismissal as
noted in the calendar will at 11:30 before lunchtime for
Grades D-8.
Respectfully,
Dr. Barder, [email protected]

With one week left before the Spring
Break we are set to enjoy several
culminating events associated with several
of our Units of Inquiry across the
Elementary School. As you know, there is
a great deal of emphasis placed on the
process of learning within the Primary
Years Programme and when we assess
students’ understanding and progress we look at their
growth over time as well as looking at the outcomes from
specifically designed authentic assessment opportunities
where we can see how well the learners have been able to
transfer and apply their skills and understandings to a
particular task or challenge.
Next week K2 will be holding several sales of articles they
have made using recycled materials. This is the end point
of their “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” unit. The children
advertised the sale and showcased some of their wares at
last week’s ECC assembly so I am sure they are hoping to
have plenty of customers visit their sale at the start of next
week.
Tuesday next week is Earth Day which will also focus
everyone’s attention on how we can practically help our
planet. The Green Team recently helped everyone learn
about saving energy through Earth Hour and now they are
encouraging us all to wear blue or green on the day to
show our support for saving the Earth.
Grade 4 will be having their annual “Market Day” on
Tuesday morning. This is the culmination of their unit “Is
the Price Right?” where they learn that goods and services
are valued based on principles of market forces. Other ES
students have the opportunity to visit the stalls and spend
their money! This has certainly been a very effective way
for Grade 4 students to quickly understand the market
research, the value of goods and services and competitive
market forces!
The Grade 5 Exhibition is the culminating event for the
students in the Primary Years Programme. All students
have been working extremely hard in their collaborative
groups researching and developing their own views on a
range of provocative issues in our world today, They will
be presenting during Wednesday and Thursday next week
to all ES classes and other visitors, including other schools
in Hanoi and MSHS students and the evening presentation
for parents is on Thursday 24th April. We are truly looking
forward to celebrating the learning of our Grade 5 children.

Dear MSHS Families,
I would like to thank all the students and
parents who participated in the first day of 3
-Way Conferences. From all reports parents
enjoyed the process and were able to gather
in depth and concrete information directly
from teachers and their children. The second day of
conferences is set for April 21.
As a student centered school UNIS Hanoi is cognizant of
the academic demands placed on our students. With IB
Diploma exams set to begin in roughly two weeks both the
grade 12 students and their teachers felt time in class to
prepare for exams was/is more important than attending 3-
Way Conferences. While you are on campus attending
Conferences you may notice our grade 12 students in class
working with their teachers preparing for their upcoming
exams. I would like to wish our grade 12s the best of luck
with their exams and also thank their teachers for pulling
double duty by teaching classes and participating in 3-Way
Conferences for grades 6 – 11.
It was my good fortune to have had the opportunity to
meet with many parents during the first day of 3-Way
Conferences. It was inspiring to learn about the hopes and
dreams parents hold for their children. While academics
are certainly a major focus for parents it was interesting to
learn that the top priority is their child’s happiness. Parents
want to know if their child is happy, has friends, is
respectful, and most of all, if they are developing into
caring young adults.
As the most important influence in a child’s life, how do
parents balance the need for academic success with the
desire to raise kind, considerate and caring young adults?
“Research suggests that when parents praise effort rather
than ability, children develop a stronger work ethic and
become more motivated.” (Grant 2014) Focusing on
values and praising meaningful accomplishment appears to
have a more significant positive impact than stressing
results. If you would like to learn more about the link
between compassion and academic success please follow
this link.
In closing I would also like to congratulate our men’s and
women’s soccer teams for their outstanding performances
at the latest APAC tournament held at Hong Kong
International School. Both teams came away with 3
victories. As a relatively new participant in the very
competitive APAC conference UNIS Hanoi has seen slow
but steady improvement. Hopefully all of our APAC
teams can build on the success garnered by this year’s
soccer teams!

At UNIS Hanoi standardised testing is one
way that we gather information to promote
and inform student learning. A standardised
test should allow students, teachers and
parents to identify a student's strengths and
areas of need in the different subject areas
that are tested. At the school-wide level the
standardised test can help to identify areas of the curriculum
that may need adapting. It will also help the school to
determine how its students are performing in comparison to
other students around the world and to evaluate the
effectiveness of our programme.
The school currently uses two different forms of standardized
tests. One of these is the Measures of Academic Progress™
(MAP) which are computerized tests in Reading, Language
usage, and Mathematics. The MAP test at UNIS Hanoi is
done twice a year so that we can check for growth in students’
development of knowledge and understanding in the areas
tested. Students in Grades 3-8 took part in the MAP test in
September.
The schedule for this semester is as follows:
Grade 6-8 students: April 22 – 25, 2014
Grade 3-5 student: May 12 – 15, 2014
MAP tests are unique - as students complete each test it
adapts to be appropriate for their level of learning. As a result,
each student has the same opportunity to succeed and
maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Please be aware that there is no additional preparation that
students can do to prepare for these tests. It is helpful for
students to have a good night’s sleep and a sufficient breakfast
prior to testing. If your child is anxious you can help to
alleviate their worries by talking, listening and reassuring.
Encourage your child to simply do their best as he or she
would do with any school assignment, test or project.
Contact the homeroom teacher if you have a concern
regarding your child’s reaction to the test. If you would like
more information about the MAP test in general please
contact Janet Field, the Director of Learning at

“Blink and you‘ll miss it”
Within the Transdisciplinary Theme of “How the World
Works” Grade 4 students have been inquiring into the
principles of demand and supply. They have been
investigating just how much market forces can affect the
value of goods or services. They have discovered that
determining the price of a product is a complicated mat-
ter. To make this a realistic experience as possible the
grade 4 students have become entrepreneurs. They have
thoughtfully constructed a business plan and have been
loaned money from a financial benefactor.
On Tuesday, April 22 they will attempt to sell their
products or services to an excited band of consumers,
namely the students of Grade 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Grade 4 students are asking that on that day your child
will bring in a maximum of 60,000 VND to spend at
the Grade 4 Market Day.
To help control the transactions (and to make it as safe
as possible for the students) the children will exchange
their money for vouchers, which they will then use to
purchase their items. The prices range from 10,000 Vnd
to 30,000 Vnd. Students may still decide to bring a snack
to school that day, but if they intend to buy from the
fantastic selection of nibbles on offer they might not
need one.
The Grade 4 team of teachers and students would like to
thank you in advance for your kind support in this. It is
one of the highlights of the year for all involved.

“Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of
its virtue.” Plato
Singers United and Beginning Band members were treated
indeed to a wonderful cultural exchange at 20-10
Kindergarten on Wed April 16th. Excitement grew as we
stepped off the buses and were greeted by approximately
200 children from ages 3 – 5 years old, who were so happy
and so grateful to see us.
With a warm welcome the performances began – Beginning
Band, 2010 Kindergarten Dancers and Singers, and Singers
United. We finished the programme with the Bamboo
cultural dance, mixing all groups together who jumped
through the colorful traditional symbolic dance of Vietnam.
Singers United and Beginning Band students had the
pleasure of donating specific musical instruments from
money kindly donated by the UNIS Hanoi Community at
last semester’s Festive Fundraiser. With thanks to Ms Ngoc
for researching and discussing with the Music Teacher at
2010, we were able to donate a drum kit, some bongos,
hand bells and a traditional zither for use in their classroom
music education programme.
It is our hope to invite a group from this school to perform
with these instruments at our next Festive Fundraiser and
we are looking forward to further correspondence to
promote music education for all.

This is your chance to learn to code and share your coding
skills with students all over the world - we will be live
streaming this event to other schools around the
globe. This is a great opportunity to connect with other
student coders and attend student-led presentations on a
variety of coding programmes and skills.
Registration is now open and spaces are limited. Only the
first 40 submissions from UNIS Hanoi will be guaranteed a
spot in the event. Register now!
PARENTS MUST REGISTER THEIR CHILD.
The students in Kindergarten 1 were excited to participate in
SNUGGLE UP AND READ DAY as part of their current
unit of inquiry, Ways to Share Stories.
The children came to school wearing their pajamas and
brought a favourite storybook from their home
country. Parents were invited to spend the morning reading
with their child and it was a wonderful environment in the
classroom as families shared stories in their home
language. Cookies and juice were enjoyed by the families
after they finished reading together..

This Saturday (April 19), UNIS will play
host to a Middle School Volleyball Festival.
The event will involve teams from various
schools in Hanoi. All matches will be
played at the UNIS Sports Center. The day
will be split into two halves, with boys
playing in the morning (8:00-12:45) and
girls taking to the courts in the afternoon (13:30-18:00).
You can refer to the attached schedule to see specific game
times.
The idea behind this “festival” is to simply provide teams
with an opportunity to play a series of matches, without
results or standings being kept and without trophies being
presented. Volleyball is growing in popularity at UNIS and
many of our Middle School players are still acquiring basic
skills and knowledge about the sport. The “no-cut” policy
that exists in the UNIS Middle School sports program,
gives all students an opportunity to be part of a team and
learn about the sport of volleyball. As long as students
meet the expectations set by their coaches in terms of
attendance and commitment, they will have a place within
the program. This festival will give all the UNIS players a
chance to play in a match situation.
The UNIS boys are divided into four teams and will be play
in two separate divisions. UNIS MRISA & UNIS White
will play in the “A” Division. The other two boys teams
are UNIS Blue and UNIS Black and they will be in the “B”
Division.
Our girls will play in three different teams. The “A”
Division will include UNIS White and UNIS MRISA, with
the UNIS Blue team playing in the “B” Division.
Joining the various UNIS teams will be: Hanoi
International School (HIS), Concordia International School
Hanoi (CISH), St. Paul American School (SP) and the
British Vietnamese International School (BVIS).
In May, the UNIS MRISA teams will travel to Ho Chi
Minh City for their MRISA tournament. We wish all UNIS
teams the best of luck this weekend and for the remainder
of the season!
GO PHOENIX!!!
Dirk Kraetzer, Director of Activities
The girls’ high school football team travelled to Shanghai in
the morning of the 9th of April to participate in the APAC
tournament hosted by SAS Pudong. We lost our first game
in a close match against SAS Puxi but retaliated with a win
against AISG, the first win in UNIS APAC Girls’ history!
We took confidence in that win and ended up with a 3-3
record, resulting in a 6th placed finish out of twelve teams.
It was the first time that a UNIS team had ever finished in
the top half of any APAC tournament. We are so proud
that we managed to accomplish this even despite all of the
injuries and setbacks that our team experienced throughout
the season and during the APAC tournament.
We came in as underdogs but made sure that by the end of
the three days, all the other teams had respect for us. With
calm and determined coaches pushing us through
cardiovascular fitness during the season, our legs carried us
to tie for first in our pool (2nd after the tie-break), and
although we were very unlucky with the draw of our
quarter final, we kept on going. After beating AISG once
again, we played a very tough SFS team and lost, but we
celebrated all of our wins: the individual battles, the goals
scored and the tenacity we showed.
We left as a team and came back as a family, and we highly
encourage others to join football next year and get the
same incredible experience as we had, and hopefully make
sure that UNIS’ name is still feared and respected among
the APAC schools.
Written by proud captains, Kim Lan Mallon (Grade11) and
Jemima Brennen (Grade 10)
When the season first started I have to admit, I was
worried. We’d just lost many of our key players from the
year before, such as Laurids Poulsen, Ruan Hamer and
Trung Nguyen. However, as time passed and our team
started to form, it was obvious to everyone that this year,
would be like no other.
When we arrived in Hong Kong for the APAC Boys Super
Soccer Tournament, we were excited, inspired and most
importantly prepared. “Super Soccer” means that all 12
APAC boys soccer teams were gathered together to
determine who was the best team in the conference. Our
first game was against SAS Puxi, a school located in
Shanghai. We felt that this was the game to make a
statement, to warn the other APAC schools that UNIS
means business. That first game, we fought valiantly for the
entire 70 minutes, and in the end we came out with a
deserving 1-0 win! The feelings that we were experiencing
after that game were indescribable, it was just unbelievable.
With that winning spirit, we carried on through APAC
winning 3 of our 6 games, finishing 7th out of the 12 teams
represented at Super APAC.
I feel this year was the year where we announced ourselves
to APAC, making it known that UNIS is no longer a
lackluster team, but instead a team that must be respected,
and feared. As well as that, personally I can’t wait till the
2015 season! Next year the APAC Tournament will be in
Kobe, Japan, hosted by Canadian Academy. Time to start
getting ready!

musicians from the National Music Academy of Vietnam,
the Vietnamese Symphony Orchestra, and expatriate
musicians. Instrumental lessons at UNIS Music Academy
are individually taught.
We are now accepting applications for a Vocals instructor
to teach one-to-one lessons of 30 minutes each for

concerts as well as for the annual ABRSM exam. Salary is
paid as per actual teaching time.
Requirements:
Formal training with a Bachelor degree or above in
Music.
Teacher certification with extensive (minimum 5
years) experience in working with children, especially
children of young age.
Ability to effectively communicate in written and
spoken English.
Interested applicants please send your expression of
interest, along with an up-to-date CV and current referees
to [email protected] by 10 May 2014.
Ms Pham Thi Thu Trang, UNIS Music Academy Officer
On Wednesday the 2nd of April, the two MRISA teams
flew to Vientiane for the Senior MRISA soccer tournament.
For two days both teams battled very hard, despite the
intense Laotian heat. On our first day, the girls drew two
games and lost one. It cost us the chance to play for one of
the top 4 places, however we still worked extremely hard
and played very well. The next day was also a tough
challenge, although we were now playing in the bottom half
of the draw. As a result of all of our hard work we finally
won our first game against HIS by a final score of 3-0.
Catherine H. scored the first goal, Freya N. added the
second and I scored the third.
I am extremely proud of our teams hard work and our
behavior on and off the field. Both teams, boys and girls,
received the Sportsmanship Award which is one of the
most important awards, because MRISA is not just about
winning, but about uniting international schools. This year I
felt very honoured to be the captain of the girls MRISA
team and to have won the MRISA All-Tournament Team
award as well.
Overall, this MRISA was a great experience for all of us. I
had the opportunity to visit a new country, experience a
new culture, visit a new school, meet new people, but best
of all play a sport that I love with a team that I love.

Measles remains a common disease in every part of the
world including Vietnam and Hanoi.
A total of 108 Vietnamese children have died from measles
and its complications so far this year out of 2,492
confirmed cases. (Vietnam News, April 17th, 2014).
Measles is a highly infectious, acute viral illness, spread by
respiratory secretions, including airborne and droplets.
Symptoms:
Begin 7 -14 days after a person is infected and include:
A typical case of measles :
Begins with mild to moderate fever, cough, runny nose,
red eyes and sore throat.
Two to three days after these symptoms begin, tiny white
spots (Koplik spots) may appear in the mouth.
Three to five days – red or reddish brown rash appears.
Usually begin on the face at the hairline and spreads
down the body. When the rash appears, fever may spike.
After a few days the fever subsides and the rash fades.
Complications:
Common in children < 5 years
Ear infection
Diarrhea
Pneumonia
Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain
Preventions:
Mandatory vaccination of Measles, Mumps, Rubella
(MMR), is part of the requirement for all students enrolling
at UNIS which is good protection for your children.
However, there are some infants and children of our UNIS
families that are not old enough to receive the vaccine.
The School Health Centre has been in contact with
International health providers in Hanoi and has been
updated with advice in this current situation. The advice
and information we are providing you is not for concern
but rather that we raise your awareness and preparedness.
Please review the information provided by international
SOS and Family Medical Practice. Should you have any
concerns regarding the current status of your child’s
vaccination schedule please email the School Health Centre
Advice from International healthcare providers in Hanoi:
Those children between 6 and 12 months can have an
extra dose of MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) to cover
them during this period. This doesn’t count as one of
their regular vaccinations and they should still have the
MMR between 12-18 months and their second vaccine
between 4-6 years.
Babies less than six months can’t have the vaccination
but they are usually still covered by their mother’s
antibodies especially if they are breast feeding.
Those children due their second vaccine should get it if
possible now but unfortunately, SOS has limited stock,
and FMP has 200.
If not available in Vietnam then you might decide to go
to Singapore or Bangkok for the vaccine.
So far there has only been one case of an expat child of
measles and she had missed her second vaccine. The
vast majority of cases have been in Vietnamese children
as the MMR vaccine is not compulsory here. As it is
compulsory to enter UNIS that will give your children
protection but anyone with a fever and rash will be sent
home immediately and advised to see the doctor.
Parents with young children are advised to avoid
crowded places particularly where there are lots of
Vietnamese children.
Good hygiene advice such as hand washing is always a
good thing.
Cover your cough – and have your children cover their
cough, NOT WITH THEIR HAND BUT INTO
THEIR ELBOW.
Vaccinations:
Please ensure your children have the routine recommended
vaccine – MMR 1st – 12-15 months 2nd 4-6 years,
alternative 2 doses at least one month apart.
School Policy:
Please do not at any time, send your child to school with a
temperature 38 C or 100.4 F +/- vomiting and diarrhea. A
