Fr. Matt Heinrich has been with us for three years (two full time and one on weekends as he finished a graduate de-gree). He will be leaving Faith Hope in about 10 days to begin his new assign-ment at Immaculate conception Pariah on Talcott Ave. in Chicago. His last weekend Mass will be next Saturday, June 23 at 5:00 pm. A reception will follow in the Parish Center. I know that you will join me in thanking Fr. Matt for the many posi-tive things that he has brought to our community. Recently he has worked very hard on some adult education efforts and on an outreach to our teens. I am still talking with the Archdiocese about a replacement for Fr. Matt. There is a possibility that a priest who is coming to Chicago to study will move into our rectory and also do parish work. I will keep let you know when I hear something definitive. I do know that a priest who is retiring on July 1 will be joining us. Fr. Joe Jackson is retiring as the pastor of St. Ignatius Parish in Rogers Park. He will be with us in late July or early August. I know that you will join me in welcoming him. Fr. Bill Flaherty returned to St. Benedict Nursing & Rehabilita-tion Center (6930 W. Touhy Ave. Niles, Ill. 60714) this past week. He has been having a difficult time walking and hope-fully can get stronger with some physical therapy. Please remember him in your prayers. I am sure that he would also be grateful for any cards/notes that you might send. I will keep you updated on his progress.

You have asked…

What’s the difference between a homily and a ser-mon, and what term do Catholics use? Well, we use both terms but for different things. The word homily is derived from the Greek word homilia, meaning “to have communion or hold verbal intercourse with a person”. Since the third century, the term has been associated with an informal commentary on scripture with the goal of illuminating both the literal and spiritual meanings of the passage. A hom-ily is given during Mass.

The word sermon, on the other hand, finds its root in the Latin sermo, which means “discourse”. A sermon is more like an oration in that it is often more formally structured and fre-quently includes sections devoted to exposition, exhortation and practical application. Of the two, the sermon is more clearly concerned with doctrinal teaching. The homily, in con-trast, is meant to shed light on what has been read from the Scriptures, “not to stifle it but to apply it to the present day” (Jungmann).

In our Bible Study last month, we looked at a passage from Lumen Gentium, which translates as “The Light of the Nations.” This document from the 2nd Vatican Council speaks on the role of faith in the lives of all who believe in Christ.

Among the many edifying topics in our conversation, I brought attention to this quote:

“He distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank. By these gifts He makes them fit and ready to undertake the various tasks and offices which contribute toward the renewal and building up of the Church … These charisms [i.e., gifts], whether they be the more outstanding or the more simple and widely diffused, are to be received with thanksgiving and conso-lation for they are perfectly suited to and useful for the needs of the Church” (LG §12).

Part of what this, and the context around this passage, is saying is that God has given us His most powerful gifts, namely His Son and Spirit, which makes us capable of every good work. I began to ask if anyone thinks of themselves as having everything they need to be complete in their faith.

Many people see faith, or their growth in faith, as acquiring something they do not possess. Scripture continues to tell us otherwise. When we possess Jesus and when we possess the Spirit we already have God with us and in us.

How do we make use of this reality? Here is a simple task I gave to everyone there: can you acknowledge the gifts of God in someone already? Can you say to others, stranger or friend alike…

You have such a strong faith. You are very forgiving/merciful/patient/hopeful. You are a wonderful mother/father/teacher.

We can say these things, but can we also say them in the context of faith, and praise God for how he makes us strong? It seems simple, but I think it can have a profound effect. Com-pliment each other and praise God. He has already given us all good things.

A Place for Kids to be Kids Their kids arrive hungry, sick and wounded from their battles with poverty, neglect, abuse or abandonment.

Among the poorest in the world with diets often including pies of mud polluted water and seasoning. They came from the slums where few go to school and half die before the age 5.

At the Center they are loved, fed, clothed, and educated in an environment of peace, love and hope. More than 40 children live there today, with many others just coming for the day. They range in age from 8 months to 14 years and a dozen are still in diapers. There is an onsite school room staffed with 3 teachers and a nurse. Health problems are common, but hospitals provide neither food nor medicine. The center was started in 2015 by Gerard Straub, and his Haitian wife Ecarlatte. Gerry says” It has not been an easy mission, but has been deeply rewarding to see the lives of the Children transformed”.
