Karen A. Brown, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, and Melissa K. Meeks, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, left a lasting legacy from ASCP in Rwanda. Over seven days in May, they taught 20 trainers, who will pass along the new knowledge to other laboratory professionals. And the ASCP representatives left resources that will be remembered and reach even more people: textbooks on a wide range of topics. Additionally, they administered the ASCPi International Qualification in Laboratory Operations (QLO) examination to 21 participants as part of a training session in Advanced Hematology.

Since pathologists are very scarce in Rwanda, clinicians often rely on laboratory professionals to make the right diagnoses for their patients, according to Ms. Meeks, Senior Manager, Examination Activities at the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC).

A long-time instructor, Ms. Brown taught hematology as did Ms. Meeks, a recent graduate with a master’s degree in molecular biology. The two laboratory professionals took turns giving the lectures to the class in the morning. They partnered with Mr. Lawrence Obado Osuwat, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, Department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Kigali Health Institute (KHI) during the laboratory activities in the afternoon, so they could all help the students with the hands-on activities.

“It’s great to be out in the world and in the laboratory, helping people deliver better patient care,” Ms. Meeks said.

Ms. Brown concurred and added, “I can see the changes we’re making and the impact we have when we’re here. Recently, one student sent me an e-mail to say that what he learned from us is already being used in the laboratory. It’s rewarding to know that I am improving patient care in other countries.”

ASCP donated scientific textbooks to the Kigali Health Institute, which will help laboratory professionals and educators teach students and keep up-to-date

China: Kingmed Diagnostics to Offer Application Fee Reimbursement to Employees

Established in 1994 and headquartered in Guangzhou, Kingmed Diagnostics is one of the first commercial clinical laboratories to receive China’s Medical Institution License

ASCP BOC Regional Representative Fany Fan during her recent visit to Kingmed Diagnostics’ headquarters in Guangzhou

On July 5, 2011, ASCP BOC Regional Repre-sentative Fany Fan met with several members of Kingmed Diagnostics’ management team at headquarters in Guangzhou, including Ms. Yan Ting, Vice President of Human Resources, Hu Zhaohui, Ph.D., General Manager of Laboratories and several managers of molecular and pathology laboratories. Kingmed Diagnostics, est. 1994, is one of the first commercial clinical laboratories to receive China’s Medical Institution License (a license issued by the Chinese Government to medical institutions that meet all govern-ment provisions and regulations). It is also one of China’s leaders in comprehensive laboratory testing services, and has been collaborating with the ASCP BOC for several months on the feasibil-ity of offering ASCPi certification to employees. Ms. Yan Ting, stated that ASCPi certification is a perfect fit for Kingmed Diagnostics, adding that Kingmed plans to reimburse employees who pass the ASCPi examination because of the high level of prestige associated with ASCPi certification. “ASCPi certification is a very practical and presti-gious indicator of employee expertise and for this reason, Kingmed will gladly reimburse employees for all application fees associated with successful completion of ASCPi,” said Ms. Ting.

On May 20, 2011, Regional Representative Alexan-dra Dólleman travelled to the City of David, Panama, to present ASCPi to students at the Autonomous University of Chiriqui (UNACHI). The presentation took place in cooperation with the UNACHI Faculty of Medicine and was coordinated by Felix Palacios, Professor of Medical Technology. The presentation included a general overview of ASCPi certification followed by an introduction to the online application process.

Fifty-five students attended the presentation, of which 17 are preparing to take the international certification MT(ASCPi) exam. After the presentation, Ms. Dólleman met with Dr. Luis Gonzalez, Professor of Microbiology, to discuss how students can prepare for the examination by using the BOC Study Guide.

University of Chile, Santiago

Juan Carlos Araya, Chair of the ASCP BOC Chile Advisory Board; Profes-sor Adjunct, University of Chile; and President of the School of Medical Technologists of Chile (Colegio de Tecnólogos Médicos de Chile), is a medical technologist specializing in morpho-physiopathology and cyto- diagnosis. He holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy, is an experi-enced post-secondary educator, and holds chairs on the Board of Histoem-briology and the Board of Professional Ethics at the University of Chile. He

also serves as the editor of the Chilean Medical Technology Journal and President of the Pan-American Association of Medical Technologists.

In 2011, Mr. Araya promoted ASCPi examinations while speaking at the following Latin American conferences and events:

Pathology Latin American Meeting, Lower Genital Tract and Sexology, in Cordoba, Argentina (Apr. 6-10, 2011); the XII Course Improvement of the Chilean Scientific Society of Ophthalmic Medical Technology in Santiago, Chile (May 20, 2011); the VI Pan American Medical Technologists Journey in Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sept. 28-30, 2011).

Q Were you well prepared to take the ASCPi certification exam?

A “In certain areas I was better prepared than others. The chemistry, blood bank, hematology and serology information from the BOC Study Guide was essentially what we had seen in rotations. So, overall I can say I was well prepared, but I was very nervous on test day.”

Q What books did you use to prepare for the exam?

A “I used the Spanish BOC Study Guide, notes, books and online information. Some of the answers in the guide seemed overly concise, so I felt the need for more research to compare with other cases and other possible situations.”

Q What did you think of the electronic examination?

A “It’s a very new concept for us, but it is an excellent system and easy to use. At first I thought it would be difficult, but the system is simple, basic, and does the job. I did not use the tool that allows you to review certain questions; I thought if I did not know the answers right away it wouldn’t help me to go back to them later.”

Q What do you think of the Spanish translation of the examination?

A “The translation is very good, even better than the translation of the guide. There were certain terms in chemistry and hematology with which I was not familiar, but the test itself was very clear and it was definitely advantageous to take the exam in Spanish.”

Q In what way do you think ASCPi certification will help you professionally?

A “MT(ASCPi) shows I meet the standards of my profession and shows my employers I have the skills required to work in this occupation. Also, I think certification offers a certain prestige and can give you an edge when looking for a job. Taking the exam certainly allowed me to prove myself—and receiving certification has given me a great deal of satisfaction.”

International Certification Report

The Philippines Advisory Board is one of the ASCP BOC’s longest running and most successful Advisory Boards in South Asia. The ASCP BOC’s relationship with the Philippines became official in Oct. 2006 and through members’ efforts, continues to garner impressive numbers of applicants and certificants each year.

In 2006, Agnes B. Medenilla, MT(ASCP), Chair of the ASCP BOC Philippines Advisory Board, stated that “the importance of international certification for medical technologists in the Philippines is to achieve global competitiveness for Filipino medical technologists.”

Five years later, Ms. Medenilla maintains her position as Chair of the Philippines Advisory Board, and has worked tirelessly to make Filipino medical technologists more competitive. Her hard work has successfully guided thousands of applicants through the ASCPi certification process. As a result, 1,505 Filipino medical technologists benefit from having achieved ASCPi certification, the international gold standard of certification.

According to Ms. Medenilla, the Philippines Advisory Board spent the first few years developing the ASCPi brand to appeal to the needs of Filipino medical technologists. “The Philippines Advisory Board is a team and has done an excellent job of sharing responsibilities over the past five years.

Members of the board, past and present, deserve a great deal of credit for making ASCPi a success in the Philippines. In 2006 we had just formed the group that would become the Advisory Board, but due to a strong team ethic we quickly developed a number of promotions to ensure the long term success of the ASCPi brand in the Philippines.”

The team centered approach to promoting ASCPi in the Philippines led to an incredible jump in the number of applicants. For instance, in 2006 just 54 applicants applied, but in 2007 there were 466. The Philippines Advisory Board was able to achieve such a feat by focusing on fundamental promotions and advocacy programs that targeted the needs of potential applicants.

“Around one-third of medical technologists in the Philippines seek jobs abroad for further experience and training. Many would see this out-flow of talent as a possible hindrance, but we saw it as an opportunity. The challenge for us was not how to overcome the emigration of talent to other countries; it was how we could turn the perceived hindrance into an advantage.”

Consequently, the Philippines Advisory Board has been resourceful in terms of advertising and appeals to potential applicant pools, and has pursued an aggressive marketing and outreach strategy with great success.

“Even though we have a great deal to be proud of, we always approach each year as a new beginning. ASCPi is still a relatively new program in the Philippines, so there is still a lot to do in terms of outreach and sustainability. Luckily, we have a great team full of talented individuals who enjoy coming up with creative methods for addressing challenges and opportunities.”

Volume 5 Issue 3 September 2011

According to Japanese legend, folding a thousand origami cranes allows a person to ask a crane for a powerful wish such as long life or recovery from an illness. Inspired by ASCP’s request for funds to help laboratories in Japan, Kimberly E. H. Ono, MT(ASCP), thought that laboratory professional staff members at Somerset Medical Center (SMC), Somerset, NJ, could fold 100 origami cranes to encourage healing and hope at a hospital in Japan.

“It would have been overwhelming for our staff to make 1,000 origami cranes, but I thought folding 100 was possible,” said Ms. Ono, who lived in Japan for 17 years. “I taught my colleagues how to fold origami paper to make the cranes.”

Most of the medical center’s 150 laboratory professionals participated in the project, an extension of the celebration for National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, Apr. 24–30, 2011, and had fun contributing to the gift, according to Kathleen S. Puder, MT(ASCP), Laboratory Director at SMC. On June 18, Ms. Ono sent the 100 cranes, considered a mystical creature in Japan, and a greeting in Japanese to Jennifer Young, CT(ASCP)CM, ASCP BOC Senior Manager of International Certification.

In turn, Ms. Young consulted Hideo Sakamoto, PhD, Chair of the Japan Advisory Board and ASCP Board of Certification’s International Ambassador. He selected Takata Hospital in northeastern Japan. The tsunami wiped out the facility but not the spirit of its staff, who immediately set up a temporary clinic under tents.

On July 15, the Takata Hospital personnel wrote an e-mail of gratitude. “We greatly appreciate your gift with warm words from outside of Japan. The road to the recovery is a long and winding way. But we will be carried away like a crane with a smile!”

Following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake on Mar. 11, the tsunami engulfed the entire four-story hospital. The staff had almost no warning, and several patients and staff died

because they could not reach the hospital’s roof in time. The chief administrator at Takata Hospital, Shigeru Yokosawa, 60, lost his life after retrieving the only satellite phone on the first floor and tossing it to a colleague who rushed to the roof. Mr. Yokosawa was two weeks shy of retirement. For weeks afterward, the satellite phone was the only way hospital personnel could reach the outside world and order necessary medical supplies.

“After the suffering they endured, it is very meaningful to have our cranes hanging in the laboratory,” Ms. Puder said. “We wanted to support our colleagues and show we were with them in spirit.”

While the origami cranes have great spiritual value for the laboratory professionals at Takata Hospital, the partnership between ASCP and the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science has raised more than $10,000 for the Japan Relief Fund, which provides resources to those schools most affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
