In this presentation I will cover…
WORKEXPERIENCE
25 June to 6 July 2012
PEOPLE WHO GO TO WORK BECOME EXPERTS IN THEIR
FIELD…
AND IT IS EASIEST TO BECOME AN EXPERT IF YOU
CONCENTRATE ON THE SKILL AND
TALENT YOU WISH TO ACQUIRE
GO TO WORK TO BE YOUR BEST SELF…
AND FIND THE OPPORTUNITY TO
TRY WORK OF DIFFERENT KINDS
So the first task is to find out how your ‘subject-likes’ and the things you like to do match up:
http://www.coa2.co.uk/myschool/?pagename=index
The most important time you can have spent so far
is ‘chewing’ over your report with both your form teacher and your parents.
Too much green and you’re too happy clappy, too much red and ‘boy
you’re negative, not enough yellow and ‘really life’s not that black and
white’. Get real!
Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just part of the
way the world works.Douglas Adams, author of Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy
? So how does the world work
?
TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SAILOR, RICH MAN, POOR
MAN, BEGGAR MAN, THIEF…
TEACHER, LAWYER, PILOT, CHEMIST, DOCTOR,
DENTIST,FIREMAN, PRIEST
BUILDER, BAKER, CANDLESTICK MAKER,
RIDER, SINGER, DANCER, CLOWN
ACTOR, AUTHOR, DRIVER, FARMER, INVENTOR,
MARKSMAN, POLICEMAN, CHIEF
AT THE MOMENT, YOUCHILD ARE TREATED AS ACHILD!
• BETWEEN SCHOOL ANDHOME WE LOOK AFTERAND NURTURE YOU
• IN PREVIOUS ERAS AND TODAY IN SOME CULTURES YOUWOULD BE MARRIED WITHCHILDREN
• SOON YOU WILL BE ABLETO DRIVE A CAR, KNOWANOTHER PERSON IN THEBIBLICAL SENSE AND EVENVOTE!
NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOUTO LEARN HOW TO:
• BE MORE INDEPENDENT
• CO-OPERATE WITH OTHERS
• COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
• COMPROMISE AND NEGOTIATE
• USE YOUR INITIATIVE
• GROW UP!
University programmes and similar work-based training are being challenged to prepare
students for careers that have not yet been invented; indeed, to develop students who are
prepared to invent such careers.
• What is Work Experience?• Why do Work Experience?• What will Work Experience be like?• What types of placement are available?• How to apply for a Work Experience placement?
‘Work Experience’is just that…‘experience’ of work…
an Observer not Worker…
To experience and apply the skills needed in working situations:
‘employability’ and ‘enterprise capability’
To gain an understanding of what it is like to work a full-time week 9-5 pm,
or finding out how a nursery operates and looks aftersmall children,
how companies use IT in a real business situation, working in a team, showing initiative etc. etc
Why do Work Experience?
• Understanding of the world of work• See transferable skills in action• Value of a good education• ‘Continue with the end in mind’• Life changing………Why?
What will Work Experience be like?• Full working day!• Treated the same as employees – can be sacked!• Unfamiliar environments – Health and Safety issues…
http://www.placementsurvivalguide.com/ • Expected not to impact on business• ‘Safe’ job roles – low skill• Ambassadors for yourself - reference• Ambassadors for the school
WHAT TYPES OF W.X. ARE POSSIBLE?
Easier to say what types are not:
• High risk• Highly confidential• High pressure• Highly qualified
Not impossible, but think laterally!
Examples of past placements
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WORK EXPERIENCE?
Your first reference – so make sure you write to the company to say thank you for the opportunity!
Knowledge of 1 or 2 careers areas• Confirm as careers choice• Extra motivation in school to work hard for exams and qualifications
Also…• Discover that you don’t like the area of work experienced• Need to reassess your objectives, follow up with more work experience in another field.
At the end, we’ll look at your information pack…
Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can
probably get a career in it.
And what did Douglas Adams have to say about those of us who are
older…
Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural
order of things.
SO…LIVE THE DREAM
…BE YOUR BEST SELF
…AND IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE…
…GO TO WORK…
