will be a better year. In this, the lastissue of the year we Mike Bilcikshares with us his XYF Pogo build.

We also talk about a subject that youeither love it, or you despise it. Yup,decals. I myself had a love / haterelationship with using decals as Icould never seem to get satisfactoryresults especially with large decals. Ittook me about 15 years of trial anderror to be able to get consistentgood results with them. So we will goover the method that eventuallyworked for me. Additionally we showyou the wonderful work that our clubmembers create month after month.

Going Vertical

The Convair XFY-Pogo

The Convair XFY Pogo tail-sitter wasan experiment in vertical takeoff andlanding. The Pogo had delta wigs andthree-bladed contra-rotatingpropellers powered by a 5,500 hp(4,100 kW) Allison YT40-A-6 turbopropengine. It was intended to be a high-performance fighter aircraft capable ofoperating from small warships.Landing the XFY-1 was difficult, as thepilot had to look over his shoulderwhile carefully working the throttle toland.

The reason I chose to build this model is because I enjoy building esoteric, off beat subjects. This model fits that genre.

Kit build review by Mike Bilcik

Manufacturer: KP (Kovozavody Prostejov or Kit Pro)Scale: 1/72

The kit maker KP is an old timeCzech model kit manufacturerdating back to the early days ofplastic model kits. It pre-datesother Czech manufacturerssuch as relative new comerslike Special Hobby, Eduard andAires. During the Cold War itwas often the only source forIron Curtain subjects. Lately, ithas run into financial issuesbut is making a slowcomeback.

Convair XFY-Pogo

I couldn't find an issue date for theXFY-1 kit, but I estimate it to be about15 years ago. Upon taking it out of theside opening box, the first thing Inoticed were the overdone deep andwide engraved panel lines. My firstthought was that the Matchbox trenchdigger had moved to Czechoslovakia. When I started building the kit, thefirst decision I made was to ignore thepanel lines and press on with thebuild.

The molding was very good with noflash evident and little clean up of theparts was required. The windscreenand canopy were molded as separatepieces and were thin and clear. The first order of construction was thecockpit as is the case with mostaircraft kits. The instrument panel hadraised detail which made it easy to drybrush in order to pick out the features.I then picked out individualinstruments with gloss lacquer. Theseat consisted of four parts whichmake a fair representation. I addedetched brass belts which I had onhand.

I then trapped the cockpit betweenthe fuselage halves. As with all theseams on this build, I spent a lot oftime and effort ensuring the seamswere perfect because I knew it was tobe a metal finish.

Metal finishes require a very smooth surface. To attain a smooth surface requiresgoing over corrections time after time. If you say to yourself a seam or a filling are"good enough", then enter the model in a contest, I can promise you a judge willfind your "good enough" and your model will be eliminated from contention. I canonly encourage you to go beyond good enough in order to attain a finish where noimperfections will show under metal paint. I painted this model with Model Masterpaints. I use enamel paints mostly. I have never embraced acrylics because enamelsare what I started with before acrylics were invented.

Convair XFY-Pogo

After joining the wings andthe vertical and bottomstabilizers which fit with aminimum of fuss, it wastime to paint. My researchshowed some paintedsurfaces on the wingswhich I painted light gray. After drying overnight, Ithen masked the paintedarea and painted the restof the model with ModelMaster Metalizer LacquerAluminum Plate. This is abuffing metalizer which Idid not buff. My prep workpaid off as I had no areasto correct because theyshowed under metallicpaint. After dryingovernight, I sprayed theentire model with ModelMaster Flat Lacquer. It wasnow time for decals. Ifound that the nationalmarkings that came withthe kit were way too large

Fortunately, I had spares in my decal stash that were the right size. As they werefairly old, I experimented with the decals I couldn't use and found that they wouldwork. The decals laid down well and didn't pose any problems.I then assembled the propellers which came with six individual blades, three ofwhich attached to two housings. The propellers are cast very delicately, so muchcare to prevent breakage during assembly and painting is required. I painted them,as well as the large hub with Testors black enamel. After drying, I sprayed them witha coat of flat lacquer.

I finished the model by adding the windscreen and canopy as well as the landing gearand the propeller assembly. All in all, an enjoyable build. The parts fit was good andpainting went well after sufficient surface prep work. Recommended.

Tips and TricksDecember 2016

Waterslide transfers, more commonly known as decals are one of those partsof model building that you either love or you despise. While decals can addincredible detail to a model, it can be quite a frustrating endeavor since it isvery hard to get good results while using them. In this article I will show youthe method I use for applying decals that is simple and usually yields goodresults.

1. Decals don’t work very

well on rough surfaces. Thisis because a rough surfaceallows for air to get trappedbetween the decal and thesurface creating that nastyeffect we call “Silvering”. Thefirst step is to cover the areawhere the decal will go witha coat of gloss varnish. Itypically use Future floorpolish, but gloss from Tamiya

or Testors work well also. The gloss will fill tiny irregularities on the surface creating a uniform surface that will allow the decal to “slide” better while reducing the amount of air that can get trapped.

2. Using a brand new hobby

knife cut around the profileof the actual graphic on thedecal. Usually the decal filmextends a little (usually .5mm max) beyond the actualimage. You want to get rid ofthis excess and it can showwhen the decal is appliedruining the end result. Takeyour time with this. You don’tneed to cut all the waythrough, just enough to cutto the clear decal film.

2.

3.

3. Place the decal on a shallow dish with luke warm water. Check it with

a brush every few minutes, the decal is ready when it can move slightly onthe decal paper.

MODELING TIP

Using warmwater to activateyour decal willwork faster andhelp preventcracking decals.

4. Next we will use Microscale Industries Micro

Set solution. Apply a liberal amount of Micro Setto the area where the decal will be applied. Thissolution is design to help avoid trapped air furtherreducing the chances of silvering.

A good pair ofneedle nose selflocking tweezersare invaluable forapplying decals.

5. Next, using a brush

slide the decal onto thesurface making sure toline it up as desired.

5.6. Using a cotton swab

gently roll it over thedecal. Start at thecenter and roll itoutward, this will pushany remaining trappedair out from under thedecal. Allow the decal todry completely.

7. Once the decal is

completely dry we useMicroscale IndustriesMicro Sol solution. Applya liberal amount of MicroSol to the decal and allowit to dry. At this time thedecal may turn wrinkledand you may feel youmessed it up. You didn’t.What Micro Sol does is itsoftens the decal and this

process may make the decal wrinkly. It is important to allow the decal atleast several minutes to dry even if it looks wrinkled. If you mess with itwhile it is still moist and soft you can break and damage the decal.

8. After a few

minutesrepeat theprocess usinga cotton swap. This willsmoothendown anywrinkles thatremain.

9. A toothpick can be used

to gently push the decalinto any recesses on themodel. Be gentle in order toavoid damaging the decal.

9.

10. Once fully dry apply a

coat of clear (Flat, Satin orGloss, as you prefer) toprotect the decals and theyare ready for furtherweathering.
