It has been absolutely delightful to share in this experience where the children have enjoyed many musical tutorials interspersed with sports and adventure activities. Being away from their regular school routine helps the students find a new approach to ensemble music, seeing the value in intensive practice. The camp also provides numerous beneficial opportunities for students to develop their social and emotional skills as well as essential problem-solving skills. After a tremendous performance today for a particularly large audience, the students made their way back home, tired but happy with the experience. I would like to extend my gratitude to the many staff members who assisted in making the camp the success it was. Thank you to the incredible music department staff of Reddam House who planned, and organised the camp ensuring that the children would be given three wonderful days away. To Dr. Michael McGregor, Mrs. Sue Goodman, Ms. Tanya Bethu- ne, Ms. Jennifer Roberts and Mr. Oliver Stanton, thank you. I would also like to thank the very talented music tutors for their commitment to the primary music program: Mr. Marcus Bortolotti, Mrs. Ellie Bortolotti, Ms. Emily Duffel; Mr. Alistair Wallis, Ms. Cindy Sims, Mr. John-Mikel Hellqvist, Mr. Gary Goldstein, Mr. Dimitri Calligeros, Mr. Michael Sitsky, Ms. Marina Suraev, Mr. Nicholas Stanton, Mr. Gabriel Fisher and Ms. Michelle Reyn- olds . Thank you to the middle school students who mentored and assisted the students in their groups: Dylan Chilchik, Jono Karney, Sasha Wrublewski, Emma Styles, Nicole Clenner, Jamie Reisen & Hugo Powell. Finally, to the incredible team of staff who willingly leave their families for three days and take on the role of caregivers, nurturers and midnight watchmen of your children. Thank you to Mr. Mark Bailey, Ms. Aimee Broadbent, Mr. Matthew Carter, Mr. Tom Cooper, Mr. Jay Crowhurst, Ms. Kerry Garner, Mr. Matthew Garrett, Ms. Nicolette Gash, Ms. Wendy Halperin, Ms. Delia Harrington, Mr. Dean Hattingh, Mrs. Claudia Perez and Ms. Sunny Rong. The contribution that each of these people makes to the experiences your child has does not go unnoticed and I know that I speak for everyone when I express my thanks. Back in the east, the K – 2 students have enjoyed a slightly quieter week with so many children away at camp. The Year 1s had an exciting day on Wednesday when, clad in their best pirate outfits, they attended an excursion to the Maritime Museum as part of their current HSIE unit on transport. The children looked fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed the day. I am pleased to say that although they dressed as pirates, they behaved like true Reddam children: respectful, inquisitive and proud! Earlier in the week, the year 5 and 6 students headed off to the ABC Studios to hear the Sydney Sinfonia. In true Reddam Style, the students looked smart and proud in their formal uniforms and impressed the conductor, Benjamin Northey, who commented on the remarka- ble knowledge and sophistication of the Reddam students when responding to questions about music and the orchestra. Congratulations must go to Sophie Veksner-Shaw in Year 5 who read aloud a letter written by Wills, the famous Australian explorer, set to music by the Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe. Peter personally congratulated Sophie on her beautiful reading. Well done, Sophie!

I would like to congratulate Jazmyn Bailey who recently performed Delta's "Wish You Were Here" at the City of Penrith Vocal Eisteddfod and was placed 2nd in her category. Her performance gained her a lovely adjudication where her excellent diction, great use of dynamics and lovely story telling were noted. Well done on a great achievement Jazmyn. On the sporting front, we had a number of teams that took part in their basketball grand finals last week. Congratulations to all the teams that made the finals and in particular to the 12s boys who won 32 – 27. The game was a real nail-biter and the coaches breathed a welcome sign of relief when the final whistle blew. Although the 12s girls team was beaten by 2, it was only in the final seconds of the game which was against very stiff competition. Well done to all the players for giving their absolute best out there. We have also has some magnificent results from our gymnastics star, Brighton Stokes. At a recent CSSA Gymnastic Championships in Five Dock, Brighton placed 1st overall at State Level 3 which is a phenomenal achievement! Well done and keep up the excellent discipline and effort! Best of luck to the sports teams competing this weekend.

‘With a cheep, cheep here and a cheep, cheep there!’ The Kindergarten classes have been abuzz with excitement since our new visitors, the Chicks arrived on Monday. The children were curious but calm as the incubators and brooding boxes were set up in the classrooms. The next day, however, was the absolute opposite. As we set foot in the door, the children watched in awe as the first baby chick hatched out of its shell. They couldn’t believe that the wet, bedraggled little chick could fit inside the shell. They were amazed at how tiring the whole process of hatching really was, as the chick stopped and rested continually. It was with great excitement each morning that the children arrived to see how many chicks had hatched!

Year 1 went on an excursion to the Australian Maritime Museum to the Pirate School this week. They all had a fabulous excursion dressed in pirate clothes. Everyone said that our school children were very well behaved and beautifully dressed. There were lots of other schools there but we were the only ones dressed as pirates!. We looked for treasure and we were given Pirate’s Licenses to take home. Everyone enjoyed learning how to be a pirate. We had a lot of fun looking at the Endeavour and the Destroyer ships. We learnt that the pirates on the Endeavour ship didn’t have a plank, so they pushed others overboard if they did the wrong thing to be eaten by sharks. A great day was had by all.

A push or a pull can make things move and we have been discovering this in science these past few weeks! Year 2 enjoyed discovering items and objects around the schoolyard than can move merely by using force: we can pull the flag up the mast, squeeze the fire extinguisher to make foam come out, press keys on the piano to make a tune, and push and pull doors to open and close them. Year 2 also in-vestigated the force of gravity by rolling toy cars up and down different slopes and surfaces. Magnets can also push and pull; we now know that opposite poles attract and the same poles repel.

Reading strategies In year 3 the children cover a range of strategies to help them with fluency and reading comprehension. We do modelled reading, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading and reading in small groups. The children read a wide range of texts in increasingly challenging topics, comprehending ideas us-ing an integrated range of skills and strategies. The children enjoy being ex-posed to these different strategies and love reading with expression to their peers. This is what a couple of students had to say: I like reading in groups because it’s fun and good to listen to other people. We have respect for each other and wait for our turn to read. Olivia Harris I like reading in a group because it’s fun and I enjoy spending time with my friends while reading the book. Alex Azzi

While extension English class studies the world of Roald Dahl the accelerated English troop is dissecting Ted Hughes' classic book 'the Iron Man'. This brilliant work of chil-dren's fiction has become a classic, spawning the now classic film 'The Iron Giant'. Through their studies, the latter class has been looking at re-ports and television news reporting. They have used this study to craft their own reports and become television news anchors. In this role they took centre stage in our converted classroom news studio to report the arrival of the Iron Man and its mon-strous impact on the town upon its return. The children got into the spirit of the day, dressing-up, making professional aliases and delivering creative and engaging reports. In fact, don't be surprised if you turn on your television for the news in the years to come and see the familiar name of a Reddam Year 4 student from 2013 across the bottom of your screen.

The first Reddam House Composition Competition was a genuine success. More than that, it demonstrated the depth of compositional talent present in the school. The Adjudicator, Alex Pozni-ak (2011 winner of the APRA Profes-sional Development Award in the Classi-cal Composition Category and Teacher of Composition at the Sydney Conserva-torium of Music), was delighted by varied compositional offerings of our students. In the Primary/Intermediate Section he awarded 3rd Place to Violet Barber for her song ‘Tears’; 2nd Place was awarded to Lucia Hamdorf for her song ‘Painter’; and 1st Place was awarded to Liam Strang for his solo piano work ‘Finger Fusion’.

On Wednesday, 8 August, the year 5 and 6 French students had the opportunity to enjoy an exciting and fun-filled LOTE Theatre French play called ‘La bouil-labaisse et la Marseillaise’. Performed by the dynamic French actress Anna Jahjah, it’s a mix of exciting and culturally rich tales about her home-town: the fascinating city of Mar-seille. The city that is due to be Capitale Européenne de la culture in 2013. Here is what some of the students had to say about ‘La Bouillabaisse et la Marseillaise’: ‘The show was very interactive and especially well- made for young students of French. The actress was very funny and had lots of children helping her cook, sing and dance. She’s a great entertainer.’ Saphira Moran ‘The French play was educational yet fun. It wasn’t an ordinary play. We all got involved and had a great time.’ Talia Wijesinghe ‘Energetic, funny and entertaining!’ Kai Mashimo
