NCBI PERSONAL CONSULTATIONS SPECIALIZED NCBI CLASSES

A staff member from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) will visit the NCI-Frederick campus in February to offer Personal Consultations to interested personnel A one-hour Personal Consultation provides each attendee with an opportunity for a one-on-one discussion about a specific NCBI-related topic of his or her choice All Consultations are held in the Scientific Libraryrsquos Microcomputer Lab which permits hands-on access to the NCBI web databases such as GenBank and BLAST

Elsevier Science has decided to close 3 in-house end-user portals noting that the benefits do not justify the high investments required Among the affected portals are BBioMedNet and CChemWeb Membership inthe portals was free although users were required toregister and access to full-text items required pay-per-view retrieval if unavailable via onersquos institution It is planned to move some of the portalsrsquo current activities to the main Elseviercom site

PDA TRAINING SITES FROM THE WEB

The Scientific Library is pleased to announce another opportunity for NCI-Frederick personnel to learn how to use a PDA (Portable Digital Assistant) A trainer from the SoutheasternAtlantic Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine will be teaching a 4-hour introductory session in February

The class will be held on Thursday February 5 from 1230 pm ndash 430 pm in the Executive Board Room of the Conference Center in Building 549

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Portable Digital Assistants - Your Mobile Future

4 hours hands-on class PDAs provided for in-class use for 12 students Other students may bring their own PDAs to the class

This course is an overview and introduction to handheld computing It is intended for noviceswith little or no experience with handheld computing The course will discuss topics that will be relevant when using the Palm andorPocket PC operating systems The course will cover topics like data entry with handwriting recognition systems using the calendar and to do lists to stay focused on short and long-term goals Health care applications will be reviewed and discussed in small groups The hands-on portion of the course will use the Palm operating system and participants will enter data and use various Palm applications to increase their comfort level and basic knowledge of this exciting technology

WHAT IS ldquoOPEN ACCESS PUBLISHINGrdquo

The Open Access concept has been gaining momentum most notably driven by the recent tendency of some publishers to design prohibitive pricing models for consortia to purchase their journals At present Cornell Harvard North Carolina Libraries Network and possibly the University of California Library System have refused to accept Elsevierrsquos pricing model for consortium access and are opting to subscribe to titles on an individual basis [We are fortunate that the NIH Libraries Consortium has been able to negotiate a contract for us]

Open Access to scientific and medical literature allows anyone anywhere with a connection to the Web to find and read research articles online and to use their contents for purposes of scholarly research teaching and personal inquiry With open access published material is archived in a public digital repository (such as PubMed Central (PMC)) which allows convenient access to content via sophisticated searching tools By storing literature in a public repository the public is ensured of not only the long-term preservation of the literature but also a freely accessible resource

Open Access Publishing BioMed Central (BMC) and the Public Library of Science (PLoS) are two such organizations that are encouraging scientists and educators to publish in Open Access journals bypassing established publishers of high-cost titles The PLoS initiative began as a protest against the cost of traditional journals and the fact that so few are freely available on the PubMed Central server The group first called for an authorrsquos boycott of these journals and over 30000 scientists agreed The boycott has met with limited success but PLoS has recently received funding to launch its own open access journals (eg PLoS Biology) Submissions to BioMed Central open access journals have been increasing BMC is funding its publishing business through Article Processing Fees (ie page charges) and also makes agreements with institutions that pay a modest sum to allow their employees to publish in BMC journals at no charge NIH has such an agreement so that any scientist at NCI-Frederick (and other NIH sites) can publish in the freely available BMC journals thus broadening exposure to their research

Public Library of Science (PloS) httpwwwplosorg The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the worlds scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource

Open Access Journals are those that use a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access From the BOAI Budapest Open Access Initiative definition of Open Access the right of users to read download copy distribute print search or link to the full texts of these articles is mandatory for a journal to be considered an Open Access Journal In addition such a journal should exercise quality control on submitted papers through an editor editorial board andor a peer-review system

PubMed Central httppubmedcentralnihgov PubMed Central (PMC) is the US National Library of Medicines digital archive of life sciences journal literature Access to PMC is free and unrestricted Also read about how NLM is scanning the back issues of PMC journals and making these digitized copies available in PMC You may browse by title or search the journal of your choice

What else can I do with LION

Beyond the services available to anyone accessing LION registered users gain access to additional personalized services

- topic profiles so you can receive an email notice when new items of interest are added to LION

- subscriptions so you can be notified when new issues of The Cancer Letter NCI Current Clips NCI Cancer Content and other publications in the future are added

- saved items and searches so you can keep a personalized notebook of useful information and strategies and even divide it into your own personal set of categories

What are the system requirements

Since LION is a service for NCI staff you will need a connection to the NIH intranet either on the internal network or by Parachute dial-up Your system must be configured for Internet access with a web browser such as Internet Explorer Netscape or Mozilla

To view many of LIONrsquos full text documents you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader available for free from Adobe at httpwwwadobecom

To sign in and use LIONrsquos personalized services you will need to register using an nihgov email address and your browser must accept cookies

How do I personalize LION

To use LIONrsquos personalized services first become a registered user Yoursquoll need to fill out a brief online form and then receive your sign-in information in an email On the web

1) Go to LION at httpslionncinihgov 2) Choose ldquoRegisterrdquo in the top menu 3) Fill out your information and submit

ndash be sure to use an nihgov email address ndash check the boxes to subscribe to email alerts

4) Check your email for a message (it may take a minute or two to arrive) ndash it will contain your new LION password

5) Return to the LION site and sign in with your email and assigned password

Once you are signed in yoursquoll see three new options in the top menu

Select Profile to - Set up topic notices where LION will send

you an email when new items are added that fit your profile

- Update your subscriptions to email alerts about new issues of The Cancer Letter NCI Current Clips and NCI Cancer Content

Use the Notebook to - Keep a personal list of items and search

strategies that you may want to use again - Organize your items and searches into

folders based on projects topics etc - Review requests yoursquove submitted

Select Preferences to - Change your password - Update your personal information

NCBI PERSONAL CONSULTATIONS SPECIALIZED NCBI CLASSES

A staff member from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) will visit the NCI-Frederick campus in February to offer Personal Consultations to interested personnel A one-hour Personal Consultation provides each attendee with an opportunity for a one-on-one discussion about a specific NCBI-related topic of his or her choice All Consultations are held in the Scientific Libraryrsquos Microcomputer Lab which permits hands-on access to the NCBI web databases such as GenBank and BLAST

Elsevier Science has decided to close 3 in-house end-user portals noting that the benefits do not justify the high investments required Among the affected portals are BBioMedNet and CChemWeb Membership inthe portals was free although users were required toregister and access to full-text items required pay-per-view retrieval if unavailable via onersquos institution It is planned to move some of the portalsrsquo current activities to the main Elseviercom site
