So many things have happened since our last FORUM. We workedon raising funds by trying new things. We started off by setting upa food booth at the Bloomington Jaycees Bruegala & Music Festivalin July, and Chef Norm Hoffman #25676 and his lovely wife Lindahave helped out by introducing everyone to Pampered Chef. Ask
Don Falls #40510 and Bruce Widenhoefer #63672 if they have been putting their newutensils to work. Hey guys, we want your recipes!!!
Speaking of recipes, we are working on putting together “Abe’s Travels across the USA”cookbook. You can submit your recipes to the cookbook; email them to Mary Ann Hilleary
#64615 at [email protected], to me at [email protected] or mail them to First Lady Sherrie Schroederat 417 N Griffin, Danville, IL 61832. The cookbooks are being sold for $10.00 so make sure you get your order in.
We have wrapped up another annual fund raiser led by head coach Denny Birt #37116. He led our team to manytouchdowns at the Senate Illini football concession stand. Thanks Denny and to everyone who worked the games.
We would like to dedicate this FORUM in the memory of Larry “Fergie” Ferguson #45060. We lost our dear friend onSeptember 5, 2012. Still today his absence is felt throughout the whole Senate organization. Though we try to move on,we often hear “Oh Larry did that”. We know that Linda Ferguson #64547 and family will continue on with his passionfor the JCI Senate.
We have really enjoyed our many travels along with our Illinois Senate family starting off at the Fall GA in Fairview Heights,IL. We had several Senators in attendance. I want to thank Melodie Ainslie #69200 for organizing the successful BloodDrive. Several Senators and Jaycees participated, to a total of 20 pints of blood. I also want to thank Norm Hoffman#25676 and his lovely wife Linda for arranging the Pampered Chef presentation given by Peggy Kehrer Staley. Chef Monte’& Chef Spiderman (Norm) along with their lovely assistant Peggy (Ray Ainslie #44136) prepared an awesome fruit salsausing the Pampered Chef utensils.
The drive to and from the US Fall Board Meeting in Charleston, WV was very scenic and quite entertaining; just ask our“son”, Digger. Hats off to the Region V states, who were recognized by US Senate President Bruce Geddes #35527, forbeing the top growth region having +12 for the first quarter. Our very own Region V Vice President Gary Pittenger#24804 also received the first Presidential Award for the 1st Trimester. Congratulations Gary for driving Region V to thecheckered flag. Congratulation to Debbie Tafflinger #70215 from Illinois as she was awarded the Return the FavorSenator for the 1st Trimester.
Our next travels were to Frankenmuth, MI to Michigan’s 40th Anniversary. Patti Reitsma #55847 and her committee didan awesome job, from the location, to the hospitality, and especially the dinner highlighting Michigan’s last 40 years.Several Illinois Senators enjoyed the boat ride, shopping downtown and Bonner’s Christmas Shop.
In between all the traveling First Lady Sherrie and I worked on “Serving Up Illinois Senate Hospitality” by helping theHoopeston Jaycees with their 69th Annual National Sweet Corn Festival to “serve up” hot buttered sweet corn. Many ofthe Hoopeston Senators helped the Jaycees make this event happen. This was my 29th year helping with the corn lineand First Lady Sherrie pitched in by helping run the husker machine. The Hoopeston Jaycees cook up over 28 tons of hotbuttered sweet corn at no charge to the festival goers.
Another event that the Danville Senators helped by “returning the favor” was the first “Taste of Danville”. The DanvilleJaycees had a food booth selling rib eye sandwiches and hot dogs. I along with Rick Jones #71685, Greg Hilleary#43305, Mary Ann Hilleary #64615 and First Lady Sherrie pitched in to help make this a successful first time event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my board members, chairmen, and Senate family for putting on yourChef’s hats and going out and “Serving Up Illinois Senate Hospitality” to your local Jaycee Chapters and making the firsthalf of this year not only fun, but successful.
First Lady Sherrie and I would like to wish you Happy Holidays and a blessed New Year.

Hello fellow Illinois Senators. It is hard to believe that we are half
way through our year. Hopefully you are creating some great
memories of our year.
As we start the second half of our year, please give all the help and support to the great
team of chairmen that are working very hard to make this a successful year.
Here’s what’s going on in their respective areas:
Kathy Crick #71017 leads us in Return the Favor Program and she is in need of your
information on what you have done to assist the Jaycees. Please send her the
information at [email protected], 7752 Garland Ct., Frankfort, IL 60423.
Maureen Butler #67669 continues to lead the Freshman Senators. A new Freshman Senator, Aaron Brown #71695,
poured the toast at midnight in Fairview Heights.
Patty Butler #65322 continues to be our representative for Camp New Hope. As always, the camp has many needs.
If you can offer any help or assistance please contact Patty and let her know. It is about 6 months before the camping
season. Let’s start looking for campers to send.
Norm Hoffman #25676 is our Future Directions Chairman. Please give him your support and ideas as he and the
committee strive to identify the direction our organization should be heading.
Happy Holidays and safe travels to one and all!

ILLINI CONCESSIONSby Denny Birt #37116
We have completed another successful year of Illinois football concessions. This year we were able to run the stand
without any outside help. This was due to all the good volunteers for this project. After 13 years we have figured out that
10 people can work very effective & efficient without too much running into each other.
I would like to thank all Senators & Significant others who gave up their time to travel to Champaign to make this
another good year. I have to give special mention to Mark Niedenthal & Tom Greathouse who were at every game. They
have been the anchors of the team. Thanks to my wife Jan for giving up her home for hospitality. She even came over &
helped a couple games. I really know how much she likes that.
I will give a final financial report at the Winter Meeting.
I’m starting to plan for next year already.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY REGION REPORTby Chris Curtis #35440
Greetings from "The Valley!" Wow, a Senate year sure passes quickly. As we near the holiday season, there is still a lot
work to do. We have 2 more Illini football concessions on Nov. 10 and 17. Call Denny Birt #37116 and volunteer to help
out. Reach out to a local Jaycee chapter and see if you can give them a hand and then send a "Return the Favor" form to
Kathy Crick #71017.
This Thanksgiving, pause to reflect on everything and everyone that you have reason to be thankful for. At Christmas, enjoy
family and friends, and remember the true "Reason for the Season" by honoring God and by helping someone who is less
fortunate than you. Susie, Katie and I send out our warmest holiday wishes to all of you!
3
First off let me thank everyone for their love, hugs and special words of comfort during this very
difficult time in our lives. Larry was a huge part of our life that was quickly taken away, and I thank
you for being there for me and my family.
Just a reminder to all the Region Directors to keep in contact with hospitality chairperson Tanya Haubner #70344 on
your assigned time for hospitality duty. Let’s continue the great hospitality that Illinois is known for!
On-To chairman Digger McGraugh #36156 has all the information on any meeting that you might be interested in
attending, please contact him and let him know of your plans.
Coming up in December will be the Illinois vs. Missouri Basketball Game, hosted by the Missouri JCI Senate this year.
Please contact Val Koble #13921 for date and ticket information.
Coming up in January 25-27, 2013 we will be traveling to San Diego, CA for the US JCI Winter Mid-Year Meeting. Hope
to see a lot of Illinois Senators there.
Mark your calendar now for February 8-10 for the Illinois JCI Senate Winter Meeting/Illinois Jaycee LOTS & Year End
Awards Banquet. This will be in Decatur at the Decatur Conference Center. I believe Melodie Ainslie #69200 will be
holding a Blood Drive this weekend also, so please plan on donating.
Then on March 15-17 please join us in Danville, Illinois for the US JCI Region V Spring Fling at the Danville Days Hotel &
Conference Center. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Chairman Greg Hilleary #43305.
Until we meet again I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable season. Please remember to show the important
people in your life how much you love them and remember “Serving up Illinois Senate Hospitality” is still what we do!

The September Meeting was very well attended in Fairview Heights. Excellent Job by all! It waswonderful to see new faces. Don’t stop attending, I know that we all have extremely busy schedulesbut that is what makes us the greatest individuals and group around. It was wonderful to reminiscewith those that we haven’t seen for a while and please come back. As we all know, all too well, we
never know when one of us will be missing.
Bill Willett, #17398 is still having “fire sales” on pins. We need to get an extinguisher and help put these out for Bill!Thank you Bill for continuing to do a GREAT JOB!
If you are in need of any products, contact Cindy Hillebrand, #58291. Thanks Cindy!
Chef Norm Hoffman #25676 and “Assistant” (in this case) Monty Schroeder #62203 had a Cook Off and it was veryinteresting and delicious also. It was very well attended and the proceeds were outstanding. I would like to thank Normand Mrs. Norm (Linda) as well as the Pampered Chef Consultant for the tremendous work and for the financial supportfrom all of those that attended the Cook Off. I know there were several that didn’t get their orders in on time, myselfincluded (the wedding got in the way) who would still like to order. So maybe we can talk Norm into doing it again? Thanksto all of you for your support.
Mary Ann Hoeller #55729 would sure like a few of those unwanted Christmas gifts you can’t find a home for to bedonated to the Silent Auction to be held at our February Meeting. Let Mary Ann or I know if you need a pick-up for theitems.

The fall meeting in Sept. at Four Points by Sheraton-Fairview Heights had a different feel, due to the
shock of the loss of Larry Ferguson #35060. There were lots of people wearing his favorite sports
shirts and Presidential shirt in his honor on Friday evening. Linda Ferguson #64547 was there with
family and was held close in warm hugs from many friends.
It is a very long time from early September to early February. Though activities during that period are few, they are
important to the Illinois Senate. Illini football concessions are an important fund raiser, and also are important in keeping
Senators connected with each other. (although the quality of play did not have a positive impact on profits) Likewise, the
two US JCI Senate board meetings during that period, and Missouri – Illinois basketball, help keep us connected with our
friends across the nation. Ahead is the busy February to May period highlighted by our hosting of the Region V meeting
March 15, in Danville at the Days Hotel, and bracketed by Silent Auction and Winter GA February 8-10 in Decatur,
and TOYP / Senate elections May 3-5 in Springfield!
In the midst of it all, don’t forget March 1, 2013, copy deadline for the spring issue of FORUM. Send copy to Marilyn
Burton #55106 at [email protected]. Remember to highlight the first time in your article that you list a member’s
name and Senate number. Thanks for your support.
Although it was September 2012, that we mourned the passing of our 40th President, Larry Ferguson #45060, the
Illinois Senate and the US Senate will miss his presence, and the many things that he did so well, for a long time to come.
His was a life of service well lived.
fYi: Miscellaneous information, notes, recognitions and eventsThe special guests at the Fall Senate business meeting included the 81st IL Jaycee President Joanne
Rinaldo #70344 and US Jaycee National Executive Director Joel Harper.
Bruce Widenhoefer #63672 was the winner of the Pampered Chef drawing.
High number - Aaron Brown #71695
Low number - Gary Pittenger #24804
The Freshman Senator toast at midnight recognized Aaron Brown #71695. And he did a great job
spreading the fantastic bubbly from a strange looking blue bottle. Change is good!
Next FORUM deadline is March 1, 2013. Send articles to [email protected].

PAMPERED CHEFby Norm Hoffman #25676
Just a note to express my thanks to all the Senators who participated in either the Pampered Chef Drawing or thecooking show, both projects were a financial success. Our head Chef Monte’ showed his experience with the tools of thetrade, when he almost left his finger in the apple dips! Thus far, we have brought in a little over $500 to the Senategeneral fund, so I say again thanks for your support.
At this time we plan another show in Decatur at the Feb. meeting to display some of the new Pampered Chef products. Ihope you would plan to participate. It’s a good cause, because 15% of the sales will come back to the Senate. See you inDecatur!

THE HEARTLAND HONEYDIPPERby Linc
Nothing bums out a honeydipper worse that a dry pit! The hot, dry summer season left the promising early deposits hardto scoop, and the events of September added little to the pit. The Illini’s on-field football performances qualified for thepit, but there was little net gain due to there impact on concession revenue. Don’t even talk about that five month longspell of little or no activity this fall and early winter. At least we had some rain, so something is in the pit. Linc isconsidering going to the east coast to clean up after hurricane Sandy, and, of course, the elections. (that was somethingthat really qualified for the pit!)
Now, on to September GA’s remains:• Now Melodie has our money, and our blood
• Cell phones are great. They let you talk to the other people at the right restaurant in the wrong town!
• Let’s take a loooooong way to lunch, be the first patrons of any kind to arrive, wait a long time for seating and an evenlonger time for service. It’s quite tasty when you are that hungry!
• There was some sort of great divide in the Hospitality room area, with many of the “menfolk” out in the hallway insteadof the room (perhaps doing some shoveling?). A group of the “womenfolk” were at a corner table and there was some type of invisible force field that interrupted the movement of a man into that area. Denny Birt #37116 tried to passacross that force field several times, but would jump and make a squeaking noise, like he was being shocked! But TerryBarker #40979 was able to breach that line, and stated that he wasn’t scared.
• Confusing things are happening. President Monty Schroeder #62203 has developed a dual personality. If you are reading about Chef Monte’ please realize this is not a typo! Wonder if he dreams about cooking?
• Strange enough, JDO #35308 was sighted after the bewitching hour. That is a rare sight, indeed. Linc would have had a better time if Larry was there.(He was, he just couldn’t give his reports!)
Always remember Linc is watching. This administration’s dry spell won’t last forever, and then the s*** will fall!

Time flies-from here to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the end of the calendar year. We have moremethods to keep “in touch” but often are busy and lose touch.
I admit that I still send out Christmas cards to family and some friends from high school, college, Jaycees and pastworkplaces. This is my effort to stay in touch.
“Touch” is considered one of the five traditional senses. A definition of the verb is: to cause or permit a part of the body, especially the hand or fingers, to come into contact with so as to feel. Touch as a noun can either be physical contact ora manner or method.
“In Touch” is in contact or communication. Being in touch with our Senators is difficult. I still wonder how we can reachout to “activate” more of our fellow JCI Senators. Do you think a personal call and invite to a meeting would work? UsingFacebook on the computer helps those of us online with that method, but it’s far from complete.
Happy Holidays to you and yours! Maybe a New Year’s Resolution for all to consider is to contact a Senator you haven’tseen at an event in a while and reestablish that line of communication. Tell them you just wanted to get “in touch”.

“Here we go, here we been, here we’re back.” Fellow senators, it has been another very busy traveling time of the year
for our Illinois Senate organization. This second quarter started with the USJCI Fall Board Meeting in beautiful Charleston,
West Virginia. The Illinois Senate was well represented at this meeting. Then we visited Michigan for their JCI Senate 40th
Anniversary. Those who attended said it was a first class event. This same weekend, the Larry Olson Memorial Scholarship
Golf Tournament was chaired by our Senate Past President Norm Hoffman #25676 at Lake Carroll, IL. Many Senate
golfers and members, who did not go to Michigan, supported this noble cause. Region V Vice President Gary Pittenger
#24804 and I traveled to the Indiana-Michigan-Ohio Border Bash in Maumee, Ohio. This was strictly a social, with no
meeting. Each year the competition is different. Last year it was a pumpkin carving contest and this year was a scavenger
hunt in an antique mall. Kentucky and Illinois teamed up with Indiana. Michigan won the 1st place, Ohio 2nd, and Indiana
came in last. It was a lot of fun. The following weekend a contingent of Senators went onto Indiana for their Fall Senate
Meeting in La Porte. Thanks to all the Illinois Senators who traveled this quarter to the National, Region, or State event.
See you at the Winter GA. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
NOTE: The saying “Here we go!” was first said by Senator Robert F. “Digger” McGraugh #36156 for many years in
his many Jaycee, Senate, and vacation travels. The sad thing about this is that AB-INBEV Corporation never contacted
him for his permission to use it in their Bud Light commercials. When Mr. McGraugh was asked for his comments, he
stated, “I just don’t understand. Maybe it’s because my beverage of choice is the Silver Bullet?”
ON-TO CHAIRMAN REPORTby Robert “Digger” McGraugh #36156
LOTTOby Mark Niedenthal #39701
We are giving away $50 each day in February. We have 1000 numbered tickets to sell. Each ticket number will match
up with the Illinois Lottery Daily Evening Pick-3 Lotto . . . or not. NOW is the time to get those JCI Senate Lotto tickets
sold and turned in. You and your friends can't win if you don't have tickets. You can still have them in time for Christmas
stocking stuffers, and they are GREAT for that. So, make a call or send an e-mail to: Mark Niedenthal (217) 497-3796,
(217) 443-2481, [email protected].
Please leave your name and mailing address. An envelope with 10 tickets (random numbers) will arrive in a couple days.
If you want more just mention it with your message/note. Please plan to turn in your tickets and money via return mail
or e-mail the numbers and then hand the loot over at the February 8-10 meeting.

THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAPLAINby Ray Ainslie #44136
“God grant me the strength to meet the challenges of the day and grant me the humility to accept all the gifts that Yougive me with a gracious heart.” Amen
Isn't that Such a simple prayer? And it makes an excellent morning salutation to the one who is greater than us all. PuttingGod first makes for a day that is focused right. It is the first line of the Creed. Meaning and purpose by putting God first. When was the last time any of us watched a sunset just to see the last flash of sun as it dips below the horizon? Or didyou ever look at a single flower in a field of flowers? I guess what I am suggesting is to “take time to take time”.
I do not know what to say about Larry Ferguson #45060. I have an article in Mentors coming out. But something mustbe said here. Simply put, he will be missed. Linda lost a husband, his children a father, his grandchildren a grandpa. Wehave lost a dear friend. We continue to find things that “Larry did” and need to find someone to replace him. I did notalways agree with him. In fact I got mad at him a couple of times. But we had something in common – the Senate andeverything the Senate and Jaycees mean. I keep going back to the one thing that I will never forget. That grin. That wry“I gotcha” grin. Until we meet again my friend, thank you for being a part of our lives.
At this time of the year I engage in my annual impersonation of the Jolly Old Elf! I see a wide variety of children. Quite afew are “less privileged” than others. Last year there was one that wanted a bed, someplace to sleep and call his own.Makes you want to hide your wish list does it not? I never promise anything in terms of a gift. But I do promise a specialgift. I remind them that Christmas is about the birth of Love and that under the tree they will find a present perhaps small, perhaps large. But that what is inside does not matter because it is the love that wrapped it that is the real present. Mywish for you all is that you find that present Christmas morning. May the love embrace you, warm you, fill you and carryyou through the New Year. God Bless you one and all. Be happy!

He is required to staywithin 20 miles of Loyola for 100 or more days following the transplant in housing that isapproved by the hospital but not provided by them. SENATE HOSPITALITYby Tanya Haubner #[email protected] • 217.413.0990
I hope that everyone enjoyed the Senate Hospitality room in Sept at the GA. Thank you to everyone for making it a great
weekend. There was food GALORE! I would love to continue on this trend with making Friday night not just a meal but
with snacks throughout the night so that those that come late and may miss the main meal still get hot food or at least
something other than pretzels and nuts. We would also like to take volunteers for snacks Saturday night.
Maybe you have a recipe you want to try out on everyone before you put it in the Senate Cookbook. What a great way to
share and show people what good stuff is in that book. For those who sign up to help out and bring food, I would ask that
your Region contact please send me an email to confirm. This way I know who is in charge of the food and I can work with
them the closer it gets. Please reconfirm with me if you think you have signed up just to make sure we don't have any
conflicting groups doing food.
I will be personally providing Breakfast Saturday AM. I know a lot of you have heard from the Jaycees about my biscuits
and gravy so I thought it's about time I made them for you! That's right HOMEMADE GRAVY. Don't miss out on a great
time to get together with friends and catch up. The Senate Hospitality Room is where it's AT!
If you have any special requests or things you would like to see in the room please let me know. I am totally open to adding
new items.
One last note and that is for Senators you are allowed 1 guest in the room with a paid Ribbon. That Guest is not allowed
a Guest as well. We are trying to keep the numbers down to those who have paid for the services. Please assist with
making sure everyone in the room has their Ribbon on them. This is not to be mean but to make sure that there is enough
for those of us that have paid and to keep our costs down so we can continue to have great Hospitality. Thank you again
for all your help and see you in Decatur.
SERVE REGION REPORTby Robert “Digger” McGraugh #36156

Stadium because of the renovations of Soldier Field.
Thank you to all who donated their time at ILLINI Football Concessions for the financial well being of the Illinois Senate.
This includes all SERVE and Illinois Senators, family members, and friends who helped on this project this year. A special
thank you to goes out to SERVE Senator Thomas A. Greathouse #60003 for working all seven games this year. This is
not the first year Tom has accomplished this feat.
Condolences to Paula Stierwalt and Senator Chris Stierwalt #52938, of Danville, for the loss of her mother and his

ILLINOIS JAYCEE PRESIDENT REPORTby Joanne Rinaldo #70344
It has been an honor to serve as the 81st President of the Illinois Jaycees. I have enjoyed traveling, meeting membersthroughout the state and attending some amazing IMPACT projects.
There have been so many great projects that I have either attended or heard about that are too numerous to list here. Asa collective group of chapters throughout the state, the Illinois Jaycees have raised thousands of dollars for Camp NewHope-helping kids with disabilities enjoy summer camp; Nothing But Nets-saving lives from malaria by providing bed nets;Relay for Life-helping individuals who have been affected by cancer; Support the Troops-helping those that haveprotected our freedoms; as well as many local organizations and families that needed help.
I have seen members improve themselves and their leadership skills through their involvement. It might be as simple asintroducing themselves with confidence to their chapter or to their local Mayor, to running an effective meeting, deliveringa speech in front of 100 people to running a project that benefits others. I see the pride they have from the sweatequity of their efforts. Being a Jaycee allows a member to work as part of a team to make an extraordinary impact.
As the State President, I have also had the opportunity to represent our great state at the national level in St. Louisduring U.S. Jaycees Leadership Academy in January, in Minneapolis during our Mid America Institute gathering; in DesMoines at our National convention; and finally in Harrisburg during the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Jaycees GovernmentalAffairs Leadership Seminar in September. It has been great to work with other state presidents and the national team onhelping to shape our national organization.
I also was fortunate to attend the JCI Partnership Summit in New York City with other members from around the world. The experience was a great illustration of the line of our Creed: “That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereigntyof nations.” Members from all continents came together to discuss how we can impact not just our local community butthe world, just as the forefathers did at the founding of our international organization. Many times, the issues that we facein the U.S. are the same or similar to what other young people face in their communities in other countries.
We discussed the importance of working together to address the UN Millennium Development Goals. These issues are notjust Third World country issues but issues we face locally. I know, working as a team, the Jaycees will continue to makeprogress in solving these issues.
I was also invited to attend a U.S. Jaycees growth strategy meeting. The main component of the meeting was getting backto our organization’s roots of solving community issues. The idea is to step back, talk to community officials and othercommunity members, to determine what problems our communities face. Then as a chapter, decide how we can addressand help solve the issues.
This year, the Illinois Jaycees have taken the right steps by passing Bylaws that re-define our leadership roles on the statelevel and updating our regional support structures which will position our organization for success. This is just a first stepin making us successful. The second step is to have our members participate in our organization at all levels includinglocal, region and state levels. Taking leadership positions are twofold: giving back to the organization and providing anopportunity for further leadership growth.
As I write this article, I look forward to attending the Junior Chamber International World Congress in Taipei, Taiwan at theend of November. It is always awesome to network with over 5,000 members from around the world and hear how theyare making an impact in their local communities. The JCI World Congress is a great way to meet Jaycee members fromaround the world, attend trainings with global perspectives on solving local issues, and have fun by enjoying the manydifferent cultures.
Next year, in addition to serving as Chairman of the Board for the Illinois Jaycees, I may be fortunate to serve as a JCIInternational Vice President. If elected to this position during the JCI World Congress in Taipei, I will have theopportunity to meet members from outside the U.S. and promote the benefits of being a member of the Junior Chamber.
These are my experiences of just one year. All of these experiences made an impact on me and showed me why theJaycees are one of the greatest organizations in which to belong. We continue to expand our membership so more peo-ple will enjoy this great organization and help us to continue to make an impact. And as always, please remember to offerthe opportunity to join this great organization to others!
