DECLAN BURKE LONG TIME LISTENER FIRST TIME CALLER I like most TDN subscribers have read with interestMr Irwin=s various OpEd articles Yesterdays piecewas no different to others I=ve read in the past MrIrwin it seems likes to indulge his appetite tospeechify his audience oftentimes with an unabashedno-holds barred flair for the controversial He is nodoubt a well-respected highly successful member ofour Thoroughbred industry and when he does expresshis opinion those with influence and power should takenote This time however its my humble opinion thathe could not be more wrong Horse racing does indeed need an all encompassinggtalphabet group= to govern our sport just like the NFLNHL MLB or MLS Something people had hoped theNTRA perhaps could and should be that group Horseracing needs a governing body with the power tostandardize and set forth uniform rules across all racingjurisdictions regarding race-day medications rules thatare black and white without room for gray areas agoverning body unilateral in its approach to meting outjustice to those that would infringe upon these rulesRacetracks could be its referees and be responsible formaking sure their house is in order that all players areplaying by these rules and all balls are properly inflatedso to speak Mr Irwin knows it and deep down inside we all knowthat public perception holds the fate of our sport in itscollective hands Bringing in legislation to involve theUSADA would be the death knell This would validatethe general consensus that our troubled game isindeed tainted The thing is there is a blatantly obviousdifference between our athletes and the pro athletes ofother sports Thoroughbreds do not ask for the needle

As for what USADA has done and what they coulddo for our sport I would suggest reading about BALCOwhich as you suggested began when a track coachdropped a dime on the labs owner Victor Conte I think you will see that USADA has been effectiveAs for not being aligned to stakeholders in racing theywill not even agree to be involved with our sport unlessthey are completely independent This is their onlycondition in making themselves available to our sport As for Marshall Faulk not going public and talking offthe record about it I will ask Marshall myself as I haveeasy access to him since he is a partner in our Grade Iwinner Euro Charline I like to do my own research

This flagship event which echoed such popularschemes as Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe weekend inFrance and the new Irish Champions Weekend willeffectively cease to exist after only one year We askedRod Street Chief Executive of the British ChampionsSeries for his view on these changes

Rod Street It=s a positive move There was originally aone-week gap between Future Champions Day andBritish Champions Day and they were only broughttogether because we had to meet fixture listcommitments given to the European PatternCommittee We created British Champions Weekend totake advantage of that change but both parties werehappy with the original timing
